While it's unlikely that Kirk is activated in time to be of assistance this week against the Commanders, the 29-year-old free-agent signee practiced Thursday for the first time since the early days of training camp. If he isn't back by next week's game in Atlanta, he's all but certain to be out there after the bye week.

Positive signalRole

Kirk nearing return after bye; 2022 form (1,108 yards) would be significant midseason boost.

Kirk practiced Thursday for the first time since early training camp after a calf injury; unlikely to be activated for the Commanders game but all but certain to return after the bye week (Week 9 vs. Raiders on Nov. 8). In 2022 with the Jaguars, Kirk posted 1,108 yards on 84 catches; even at his 2024 Texans pace of 28 catches for 239 yards in 13 games, he represents meaningful reinforcement for the 49ers' depleted receiver room.
