Skattebo, however, had a markedly different takeaway. The Giants' leading rusher played sparingly in a 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints and did not have a single carry. With Skattebo having lost a fumble in overtime the previous week – his fourth in five contests – to shut down any chance of a win in New York's eventual 27-27 tie to the Washington Commanders, many interpreted the sharp workload shift as an intentional and perhaps punitive action.

Skattebo benched with zero carries after fourth fumble in five games.

Giants' leading rusher received zero carries in 34-27 loss to Saints after fumbling in overtime the previous week (his fourth in five contests). Coach Harbaugh claimed the workload shift was not punitive and attributed it to trying different backs and "getting the hot hand," but Skattebo interpreted it as punishment for his turnover issues, saying "I got punished for what I did (against Washington)." Skattebo acknowledged he didn't expect zero carries despite being prepared for a diminished role based on coaching staff discussions.
