Winston benched mid-game after up-and-down performance; starter role now in question.

Winston was benched in the fourth quarter after a mixed performance; he completed 14 of 26 passes for 152 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions while taking four sacks. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Winston "was up and down today, for sure" and indicated the starter decision would be revisited after the game. Harbaugh stated: "Like I said, I can't answer it now. It's not even up for discussion or conversation right now. We got to go back and go to work." Winston acknowledged the uncertainty: "That's him. That's a decision that he'll have to make." The benching in favor of J.J. McCarthy creates a quarterback competition heading into Week 7 against Houston.
