Winston's reserve role limited Giants' ceiling; McCarthy benched him mid-game.

Jameis Winston served as a short-term, hold-things-steady reserve after Jaxson Dart's injury, with the source noting there was a limit to what the Giants could accomplish with him. The 1.5-game lead in the NFC East under Winston wasn't indicative of who the Giants were, but rather a product of the division's lowly other patrons. McCarthy was benched in for Winston in the fourth quarter against the Saints, suggesting Winston's limitations prompted the change.
