Daily Norseman on J.J. McCarthy
ArticleMinnesota Vikings News and Links: When Did 6-1 Become Not Good Enough?
From the article
Where he was drafted (10th overall), I thought it was a stretch. It's the same stretch that the Giants went with Daniel Jones in drafting him so high (6th overall)... But until you start to blitz him and stop the run. When you stop the run and start blitzing him, now you force the ball to be in his hands for decisions to be made. That's when you'll see the J.J. McCarthy that we've seen throughout his first couple of years in Minnesota.

McNabb: McCarthy's 10th pick was a stretch; struggles when defenses blitz.
Donovan McNabb expressed serious reservations about McCarthy's draft position and NFL readiness; McNabb noted McCarthy was drafted 10th overall (similar to Daniel Jones at 6th), played in a limited West Coast system at Michigan that didn't ask him to do much, and relies heavily on mobility and quick-game execution. McNabb warned that when defenses stop the run and blitz, McCarthy struggles with decision-making under pressure—the same issues he showed during his Minnesota tenure—and that his efficiency is scheme-dependent rather than foundational.
