it's Kyler Murray... it's a quarterback competition but the chances of JJ McCarthy starting this year to me I would be really really surprised... Murray's just sort of there and the chance of him returning to being a you know quote unquote Konami code type quarterback had north of 500 rushing yards in 2024... Kyler chose the Vikings right now...he negotiated his deal with a no franchise tag clause...if I smash because of Justin Jefferson and TJ Hawinson and Jordan Addison and Kevin O'Connell...if the Vikings go 10 and seven, make the playoffs, maybe win a playoff game, is there going to be a lot of pressure for them to give Kyler Murray whatever it takes...it could be like another Stafford McVey situation where it's just a great relationship that goes on for three, four more years.

The quarterback competition with JJ McCarthy is not a real threat—McCarthy was one of the worst quarterbacks ever seen despite playing in Kevin O'Connell's top-five offensive system, performing at a Zack Wilson or worse level. Murray's rushing upside is significant: he had north of 500 rushing yards in 2024 and can return to being a 'Konami code' type quarterback. He has elite offensive weapons (Justin Jefferson, TJ Hawkinson, Jordan Addison) and plays in Kevin O'Connell's system. If the Vikings win 10+ games and make the playoffs, there will be pressure to extend him at top-10 money rather than draft another mid-round QB in the stacked 2027 class. Downside is protected: even if the Vikings situation fails, Murray has higher leverage as a backup QB with multiple opportunities ahead (comparable to Gino Smith's rehab starter path). Potential for a 3-4 year marriage similar to the Stafford-McVay model.
