Thompkins was targeted in the slot on in-route opportunities during Mendoza's preseason debut. In one example, Mendoza had a clear window to hit Thompkins on an in-route against a corner with outside leverage, with the middle linebacker widening to open the window further, but Mendoza hesitated and the window closed. In another play, Thompkins ran an angle route from the slot with good separation opportunity, but Mendoza turned down the throw due to the nickel corner breaking on the route.
