Simpson delivered a polished rookie performance in the preseason opener against Kansas City, completing 21 of 25 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns while avoiding catastrophic mistakes. After Bennett entered training camp with a substantial advantage in second-team reps, Simpson's strong showing has blown open the competition; during Thursday's joint practice with New Orleans, both quarterbacks split 25 second-team snaps almost evenly (12 for Simpson, 13 for Bennett). McVay selected Simpson with an eye toward a future that eventually won't include Stafford, signaling long-term organizational confidence in the rookie.
