In Super Bowl XXXVI, Tom Brady threw an 8-yard second quarter touchdown pass to David Patten, which was New England's only offensive touchdown in the upset over the heavily favored St. Louis Rams. Belichick had changed the play the night before after detecting on film that Patten's defender (cornerback Dexter McCleon) had a tendency to jump passes on out routes in the red zone, making him vulnerable when the receiver turned up the field.
