Mahomes' 50-TD rookie season forced Belichick to abandon Brady's strengths and play ball control.

Mahomes threw for 50 touchdowns in his first year as a starter for the Chiefs in 2018, leading an explosive offense with elite pass-catchers (Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins) that averaged over 35 points per game in the regular season; this offensive firepower forced Belichick to employ a ball-control strategy in the AFC Championship Game rather than attempt a shootout, as the Patriots lacked the offensive weapons to compete in a high-scoring affair.
