Johnston was expected to benefit from new Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel's system, with his 65-yard preseason touchdown pass from Justin Herbert expected to be the first of many big plays in the new offense. However, the Chargers' 26-14 loss to Arizona and Herbert's limited deep passing (just two attempts of 20+ air yards) suggest the expected offensive upgrade has not materialized early.
