"I think he's gotten a lot better in a lot of facets," Shanahan said. "I think him not being up in these last couple of games has been more on because of special teams than a receiver deal. If it were just on receiver base and things like that, I think he would have got up Week 1."

Shanahan backs Watkins to step up at slot with Robinson out; preseason production supports opportunity.

Kyle Shanahan expects Jordan Watkins to make an impact filling in at slot wide receiver for injured Demarcus Robinson this Sunday against Arizona. Shanahan praised Watkins' development, saying "he's gotten a lot better in a lot of facets" and that his absence from recent games was due to special teams considerations rather than receiver performance; Watkins would have played Week 1 if it were purely a receiver evaluation. Watkins impressed in preseason with 13 receptions for 164 yards and a touchdown, and Shanahan noted he's been actively fighting to move up the depth chart.
