0:00to the Media Guy Show featuring Lenny, only NFL podcast.
0:03One of the hosts is rooting against the Knicks because they got a cat on their roster.
0:08That's Lenny. I think you've used that one before.
0:11But I like the Knicks field. I don't know.
0:14Do you have a strong lean in the NBA Finals?
0:17I don't. I'm from Boston, so probably anti-Knicks would be how I, if I had to pick between one of those two
0:23teams, I would probably pick the Spurs based off that principle here, Mina.
0:27But I'm happy, as company individuals, we are thrilled.
0:30That ESPN not only gets the New York Knicks, largest media market in the country, but also Victor Wembanyama.
0:36This could be the first of several trips to the NBA Finals, but the first carries a slightly different meaning to it.
0:42So I am pumped for tomorrow night. Have you been following the whole, who is the NFL equivalent of Wembe conversation on Twitter?
0:49In fact, I think Nicky Manwari crowned himself NFL Wembe, if I saw that correctly somewhere.
0:54Yeah, I would say that right now, Nicky Manwari has the right to say about whatever he wants to say.
1:00So if he wants to take the, I am the Victor Wembe-Yama of the NFL crown, it is his.
1:06So I've also seen the Jalen Brunson. I've seen the Jalen Brunson of the NFL parallel drawn by our colleague Adam Schefter,
1:12who opined, sort of like Drew Brees going to New Orleans.
1:16Right? A player who was viewed one way, goes to a franchise, completely changes the culture and also the success of said franchise.
1:23And if Brunson can lead the Knicks to the championship, he would be viewed as definitely a Drew Brees type figure in New York.
1:30Well, in my view, if there is an equivalent to Wembe in so far as an NFL player who is an absolute
1:37alien, both in terms of physical everything and technique and production, it would be one Miles Garrett.
1:42And he has dominated the news cycle over the last 24 hours because in a blockbuster move, he was traded to the Rams.
1:49We're going to talk about that trade. And then we're going to talk about the A.J.
1:53Brown trade, which has kind of been like almost the forgotten.
1:57When I hit you about doing this pod last week, I was like, come on, let's talk about the A.J.
2:03Brown trade. It's really interesting. I want to talk about both teams.
2:06And then this Miles Garrett trade hit. So we're going to hit both of those.
2:11Maybe even get to a little fantasy stuff. I've been asked why do you come on to ask you some fantasy questions?
2:18But let's start with Miles Garrett. If you've been living under a rock, the Browns traded him to the Rams for.
2:24It took a second for all the comp to come out.
2:272027 first. Jared Verse. This was actually the biggest shock of all that Verse was in the trade, in my opinion.
2:34And then a 2028 second and a 2029 third.
2:36So we'll get to the Browns side. And I want to talk about the comp.
2:41I want to talk about Jared Verse. I want to talk about all of that.
2:45But let's talk about it from the Rams side.
2:48Already Super Bowl favorites before they traded for Miles Garrett.
2:51And it's almost like hard to find a way to talk about this trade or I guess to talk about any downsides
2:58because he is so obviously the best defensive player in the NFL.
3:01Like I said on live field, I was like, I usually I come on.
3:06I try to give you like some cool stats that show you why a player is unique.
3:11But Miles Garrett is literally first in every possible statistic.
3:14So I don't even know, like, what is the case against?
3:17Is there a case against it or is it just pure win and upside for the Rams?
3:22Yeah, I mean, this is pretty much clear upside and win for the Rams.
3:26Sometimes when a trade of this magnitude takes place or a player, not of this skill set, but of a high level skills that takes place.
3:34It's a team who has an egregious need that fills that need by paying a steep price to acquire that player.
3:41Maybe the Patriots and AJ Brown, who we'll talk about in a little bit, fit more into that category, right?
3:47The Rams are already one of the better pass rushers in the NFL last season.
3:51ESPN had them eighth in pass rush win rate.
3:54They've got building block defensive players and Kobe Turner and of course Jared Burst prior to this trade and Braden Fisk and Bryant Young.
4:01There are a lot of really good players on this Rams defensive front.
4:05This was really just opportunity striking by the Los Angeles Rams persistence paying off.
4:09The only thing that I was thinking about, Nina, is what emboldens the Rams to do what they did, which is I
4:16think in some people's eyes going all in. The last time the Rams went all in, they of course won the Super Bowl.
4:23And then a year later, they ended up sacrificing a pick to the Lions, which was sixth overall.
4:28Yeah, so like the all in tradeoff was winning a Super Bowl and then having an absolutely wretched season the following year.
4:35They dug themselves out from that really quickly, which I think is a byproduct of obviously the organization being really good.
4:41They've got a great front office that has shown itself to be amongst the best in player personnel.
4:47Sean McVay is obviously one of the best, if not the best coaches in the NFL.
4:51And then I wonder, Nina, if there is an L.A.
4:54factor here that we don't really talk about that much in the NFL that I think we talk about a whole lot in the NBA specifically.
5:02It's the idea that certain markets, if they have the right infrastructure in place in the front office, the coaching side, can
5:09just find their way to great players because players will want to be there, right?
5:13Not that Miles Garrett has full control over his situation, but you have to imagine that if ever there was a time
5:20where Miles was expressing his desires to the Browns about where he'd want to be besides Cleveland, it's not just being somewhere
5:27where he can win, but being somewhere desirable. Everybody wants to be in L.A.
5:31Every athlete especially wants to be in L.A. Every rich person wants to be in L.A.
5:36for all the great reasons that we know about.
5:39And I wonder if the Rams feel like, hey, they're going to be a magnetic draw that even if they have fewer
5:45resources or seemingly have been all in in recent years, they can still find a way to put together really, really good rosters.
5:52That's not something I think I would ever talk about or I think I would have imagined talking about with basically any other market.
5:59But it feels to me like the Rams are playing with a mindset that's a little bit different that I don't think
6:06would be the case if they were playing in some Midwest market or something like that.
6:11I also just think McVay, right? Like they're, yeah, they bottomed out a bit one year and then they bounced back.
6:17They bounced back with good drafting. They really hit on those picks.
6:21Lesney deserves credit for that. But also I think with McVay, you know, this team is never going to be bad for long.
6:28Now, I do think reasonable questions about how long Sean McVay is going to be.
6:32There's been rumors about him stepping away. You know, that can come into play.
6:36If you're going to criticize this at all, I would just say, you know, come 28, 20, 2020, 28, 2029.
6:42Yes, they have the young quarterback, but Miles Garrett will be 33, 34.
6:46Jared Verse would have been much younger. They are going all in on this current iteration of the roster.
6:52And it is a very short termist is the, you know, I think maybe it's a little bit unfair, but it is aggressive.
6:59They are aggressively trying to win this year. I would also add one more thing.
7:04I think, and you probably have some thoughts on this.
7:07I was looking at Miles Garrett's contract. I was texting you about it.
7:11It's actually pretty cheap. And Garrett is a, you know, financially, I mean, everybody's financially motivated.
7:15I feel like he might ask for a raise.
7:18What do you think? We were talking about it yesterday, the roster or his contract for me.
7:23I'd be surprised if part of this deal doesn't include some sort of modification to his contract.
7:28I know there's nothing that podcast audiences love more than salary cap and, you know, collective bargaining.
7:33People are listening to this being like, how the heck are the Rams even able to do this?
7:39So I do think it's pertinent. Sure. So the Rams, not only are they able to afford it for this year, they
7:46didn't have to like touch any contracts to make this deal work.
7:49A lot of times when a player is being traded, a team, you know, move some money around with another veteran to acquire someone.
7:56Not the case here with the Rams. But Miles Garrett signed an extension last year at four years, $160 million, $40 million per year.
8:04That preceded amongst other deals in Hutchinson and, of course, Micah Parsons.
8:07If you're Miles Garrett, if you believe that contracts should reflect performance now and performance going forward, which that's the name of the game there, right?
8:15You're going to the Rams and you're saying, I'm thrilled to be here, but let's add $10 million per year to my contract.
8:22Because if Miles Garrett was making $50 million, slightly more than Micah Parsons, whatever it is, $47.2 million or $48 million per
8:29year, nobody would say like, whoa, he's not worth it, right?
8:32Like this would be a player who has earned the right to ask for more.
8:36I would be surprised if he doesn't ask for more upon this trade, but I would also be surprised if the Rams
8:43weren't aware of that prior to doing this deal as well.
8:46And it'll be backloaded. The deal's already very backloaded.
8:49And again, that kind of cuts to the like, okay, let's talk in 28, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20.
8:55Okay. So the other question I want to start posed about Garrett, who Garrett has been unequivocally the best defensive player in the NFL since Aaron Donald.
9:03A lot of smoke around him the last couple of days.
9:07Retired. It was, you know, the easiest vote in the, in the defensive player of the year.
9:12Was it unanimous? It had to have been unanimous, right?
9:15I don't know. He broke the stack record. I believe it was.
9:18Yes. I do want to ask you whether I think it's even possible though, that we could see an even better version of miles Garrett this season.
9:27He is turning 31 and we'll see, you know, at some point time comes for us all, but he showed no signs
9:33of slowing down last season in any way. Not just in terms of his production, but like the eye test, right?
9:40Still unbelievably quick. I don't want to get to that too.
9:43But he also played for a Browns team that despite facing a fairly easy schedule was very bad, right?
9:49The Browns with miles Garrett played with a league at the 26 highest rate in the NFL, which honestly is better than I thought.
9:56But the Rams unsurprisingly played with a lot of players.
9:59The Rams, unsurprisingly played with the league at the fourth highest rate.
10:02Yeah. He also gets to play next to Kobe Turner, Brayden Fisk, Byron Young.
10:07Um, it's a better surrounding cast than he had in Cleveland.
10:10So like, what do you think his impact could be joining this defense in this defensive line?
10:15First of all, if we can issue an audio mea culpa from like four minutes ago when I called Byron Young Bryant
10:22Young, which I've done like three times in the last 24 hours.
10:25Uh, so shout out to you, Byron. Uh, very good young defensive player as well.
10:30Uh, I, I kind of wonder if this all sort of comes out in the wash Mina for these reasons.
10:36You're right. Uh, the Rams are going to be winning more frequently than the Browns were, which provides more opportunities for, for
10:43Chris Shuler, the defensive coordinator to say, pin your ears back and go.
10:47So Myles Garrett, he didn't get that many opportunities when playing in Cleveland.
10:50Every game is also going to be consequential for the Rams.
10:54You mentioned they are the betting favorites to win the Superbowl next year, which of course will be played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
11:01Uh, I'm not saying that Myles Garrett. Stat padded in fourth quarters of games in which the Browns were getting blown out by any stretch of the imagination.
11:10I also think it's fair to note that the foot was probably off the pedal a little bit when Myles was playing
11:16against some of these teams in prior years where.
11:19The Browns were not winning or we're not going to have a chance to win those games.
11:24It's such a ridiculous bar that Myles has set literally the most sacks in a single season in NFL history last year with those 23.
11:32That I think that the ecosystem he'll be rushing in is probably better because of all the players around him.
11:38Fewer double teams, but he's also going to see the best of the best more consistently.
11:43Consequential games against Seattle twice a year, San Francisco twice a year, division or not division champs and playoff teams, uh, this upcoming season as well.
11:50So, um, I expect Myles to have a dominant season.
11:54I don't know that I can say with certainty that it's going to be decidedly more dominant or less dominant than it was in Cleveland.
12:01I think in their own division, you're, you have three teams who are going to run the ball at a very high rate.
12:08And one imagines that will even, that could even increase right.
12:11Uh, with this addition, the Seahawks ran the ball almost, almost, I think it's second highest rate on early downs in the league.
12:18Um, the Niners always have a pretty high run rate and then Arizona, like literally it's running back in the room is,
12:25is clearly the strength of the roster. I'll leave it at that.
12:29Um, yeah, to your point, I think also what could be more likely than Myles stats going up is that everybody else is going to eat a lot.
12:37Right. Cause he was the most chipped player in the league, uh, last few years.
12:41I think last year, just second to TJ watt.
12:44And yeah. And the other Rams defensive linemen will benefit from that.
12:48The other thing I want to mention is I think the Rams moves in totality, um, work really well with this addition.
12:54And I understand everything works well with the miles Garrett addition, but, uh, I alluded to this miles is very fast, right?
13:01This is why he's such a freak at his size, his ability to get off the line of scrimmage is unbelievable.
13:07In fact, he had the fastest get off in all of football here, 0.70 seconds, according to next to in stats and
13:14the Rams pass rush as good as it's been.
13:17And it's been much more oriented towards power with Jared verse.
13:20Right. And, um, they actually didn't have any player rank inside the top 70 in get off.
13:25So quarterbacks are going to have to get rid of the ball much quicker.
13:29The Browns faced a ton of quick game always with Garrett Rams are about middle of the pack.
13:35And then I think back to the corners that they traded for Trent McDuffie and Jalen Watson, very good tackling corners field.
13:42Yeah. So if you think about how Garrett is going to affect the way teams play the Rams, then suddenly you think back to those additions.
13:49And I feel like it all works together really well.
13:52It's hard to find a hole in this off season, Mina.
13:56We could certainly talk about the Ty Simpson pick a million times over.
14:00And some might say, Hey, you'd feel even different about this team.
14:03If it was Makai Lemon is the third wide out against Ty Simpson.
14:07Yeah. I just think that at some point you have to find a way to satisfy the needs of both the short and long.
14:14And probably in this case, the front office versus the coaching staff, right?
14:18Every coach wants to win, wants to win right now.
14:21Uh, when you have, and I don't, at least according to Andrew Barry, it doesn't sound like this deal was done by
14:28the time that the draft was taking place. It sounds like this is a deal that was discussed since then.
14:34Um, but if you're the Rams and you think there's at least a possibility of trading for miles Garrett, then your urgency
14:41to acquire a quarterback in the draft, if you like the player, which clearly the Rams did alters, because if you're not
14:47going to have a 20, 27 one, you're not going to have a 20, 28, two, you just have less resources to
14:54work with to maneuver the board because you're not likely to get a quarterback with your original pick, which assuming reasonable trajectory
15:01for this franchise is going to be, I don't know, 24th at worst, right?
15:05Probably more like 28 to 32 each year. So, uh, it's been an a plus off season for the Rams.
15:11They're the big winners of the off season. I don't think that far behind them though, is your Seattle Seahawks.
15:17And the reason why I mean it is this is perfect for the Seahawks.
15:21The Seahawks are the rare defending Superbowl champion that gets the play gets to play the, we are now disrespected card.
15:27I know. And it kind of works. I posted a like more quick trade reaction.
15:32I mostly talked about the Brown side, which I promise we're about to get to, but I was like, yeah, the Rams
15:39are the best team in the NFL very clearly.
15:41And I did have a lot of Seahawks fans saying, excuse me, we're the Superbowl champs.
15:46And I'm like, guys, you're the Superbowl champs. But like, look at like the Rams roster.
15:51It's we don't like the best team is based on the quality of the existing roster.
15:56And that doesn't mean the Seahawks aren't, you know, one of the, if not the second best team up there.
16:02I think that these are the two best teams.
16:05I believe that. Right? Like, let's talk about it.
16:07Really quickly on the Ty Simpson trade before we move to the Browns.
16:11Yeah. Cause that has come up a little bit right over the last 24 hours.
16:16Oh, it's been interesting field. Cause I've seen takes on both sides.
16:19Some have pointed out like, well, now they don't have the pick.
16:23So they had to take the quarterback now, as you talked about.
16:27And then on the other side, people said, well, if they were all in, why did they take a quarterback?
16:33I might take on that is just like, we, I, we don't know.
16:36First of all, obviously we won't know until Ty Simpson plays, whether it was a good pick.
16:42Right. And then as far as the decision to take a quarterback, irrespective of the talent, my feeling is, is that like,
16:48we again, won't know whether it was a miss until we see if the receivers and the offensive tackles play an entire season.
16:55Right. Like if, and, and I'll go out one little potential thorn, the Rams now have, do have less draft capital to do a mid-season trade.
17:03Which could happen, but that's all hypothetical. Right. Yeah.
17:06But if you list these problems in whatever order that you do, Mina, these problems are so high society compared to 29
17:12or 30 of the other teams in the NFL.
17:15So I believe in, um, there might be fan bases that are disgruntled by this take, but I do believe we enter the NFL season.
17:23Assuming everybody stays healthy. That's a primary contributor with two teams in a tier by themselves.
17:27We've got the Seahawks and the Rams, whatever order, uh, you want to put those two, I tend to defer to the champs and the Seahawks team.
17:36Yes. They lost some key pieces, but they also retain some essential pieces and have extended guys very handsomely and deservedly.
17:42And man, I just got paid for their call.
17:45Yep. Shout out to their call. Um, my God, Mina, that defensive effort in the, in the playoffs, especially was just ridiculous.
17:51So, um, I am not dismissing the Seahawks by any stretch of the imagination as the best team going into the NFL season.
17:58So yes, the Rams, there are things that could come up and there are ways in which they are more limited than they were previously.
18:06That being said, everything they have done to put themselves in position to compete for the Superbowl this year.
18:12It's really hard to argue that there was a better path for them to take.
18:16Yeah. I know people have been like, well, if Matthew Stafford goes down, they're in trouble.
18:21Literally every team. How about Jalen Hurts? Or how about, you know, whatever.
18:25Drake May. What about Josh Allen? I mean, it's, it's, that's what happens.
18:29You have a great quarterback. Nobody has two great quarterbacks on their roster.
18:33It's a top heavy situation. I would say the downside would be like Michael Parsons has, you know, getting hurt in green Bay.
18:40You saw when you have so much, you know, or orient, like geared towards this player.
18:44Now it can cause some issues. All right. Let's, let's hit the Brown side now.
18:49So you and I, I want to start talking about whether they got enough before we talk about verse.
18:55And, and so again, it's the 2027 first, which I think we all agree will be at the end of the first round close to it.
19:03Jared verse. And then the 2028 second and 2029 third.
19:06So Parsons trade was the comp that jumped up immediately for me to first and Kenny Clark field.
19:11I feel like this is pretty equivalent to that.
19:14Jared verse in my mind is well worth a first rounder.
19:17In fact, at pick 19, he is like one of the like best case scenarios picking in that, like for the Rams, he was an amazing pick.
19:25And then the 2828 second and third, if you're trading with the Rams, you want picks further out in the distance away from Matthew Stafford, potentially retiring.
19:33If those land like somewhere in the middle, you know, whatever that ends up depending on what value chart you use being
19:40a late first or an early second. So all told field, like I felt like this was reasonable value for a player
19:47who, you know, is turning 31 this year, as good as he is.
19:50It was time Mina to like, let's just acknowledge it for the Browns.
19:54I understand that it's hard. You wake up this morning and you're worse than you were yesterday.
20:00Let's just be honest about where things were at with miles Garrett and the Browns.
20:04Miles Garrett last off season requested a trade. And then all of a sudden that trade request went away when he signed
20:11an extension for four years and $160 million, clearly motivated by the dollar last year in Cleveland.
20:16And by the way, that's fine. You know, like we all have to look out for ourselves, but his frustrations about playing
20:22for a losing team did not go away. And this team isn't going to win meaningfully this year.
20:28So we're just going to be back in this spot next off season with miles Garrett being a year older, any kind
20:35of risks that, you know, applies to every other player applies to, to, to Garrett as well.
20:40If something happens to him or if he goes from think about where TJ Watt was like three years ago or two
20:46years ago compared to now, he's still an amazing player, obviously, but I think some people feel like the peak of the,
20:53yeah, the peak of the powers were just a couple of years ago.
20:57These things can happen. And he was unhappy, right?
21:00I mean, the Browns could, could say otherwise, but miles is absence from the Browns was becoming noticeable whether it was, and I get it.
21:07These are all voluntary, but when you're the highest paid player on the team, the best defensive player in the league, yes,
21:14the microscope is going to be a little bit more focused on you.
21:18Miles Garrett was attending Cavs playoff games and then not attending Browns off season work.
21:22Like you think people are just going to ignore that?
21:25Like, no. And it was a sign that miles was dissatisfied.
21:29They had to move on. And within the context of trading miles Garrett, whether they had to move on or not, it's a darn good return.
21:36I mean, Jared versus if I don't know, I haven't put this much thought into it, but if we were drafting non
21:43quarterbacks around the NFL to build a team board for the next five or six years, it's probably a top 50 pick, right?
21:50I mean, maybe way more than that, but I'm just using 50 as a sign that like, this is a legit building block.
21:57Who's 25. He's a little bit older compared to most third year players, but it'll be 26, I think in November of this upcoming season.
22:04So you're getting a five ish year advantage in terms of age over miles Garrett.
22:09And since he entered the NFL, he's got 10 fewer pressures than Garrett.
22:13Now, not as many sacks, obviously, but this is not some good pass rusher.
22:17This is an elite pass rusher who has not even reached the prime of his career.
22:22And I think the key point is like, we're not comparing him to Garrett.
22:26You're comparing him to the average late twenties, early thirtieth draft pick.
22:30And that's, he's better than the vast majority of players taken.
22:33Cause again, that's the comp, right? Like, Oh, we wish the Rams had given us a first.
22:38I saw someone say, I want two first and verse, please.
22:42That was never going to happen. And in that regard, he is worth it.
22:46Three years left to cost control. Um, look, he, I would say like, there's a little bit of a step back after year one, obviously in production.
22:54And I think some questions about the way he wins, cause it is so power oriented, but I feel like pretty strongly,
23:01he's got a good floor as a rusher. And then as a run defender, he's already elite.
23:06I mean, he, he was ESPN has the run stop win, which we don't quote as much as pass rush win second
23:12only to max Crosby over the last two years amongst edge rushers.
23:16So allows you to play the current meta, the light box style.
23:20Yeah. Like I, I just feel if you're at the Browns, stop comparing him to Garrett, get that out of your head
23:26and compare him to the alternative of getting the draft pick.
23:30I would feel very good about having Jared verse on my roster.
23:33I would also feel very good about having those two future picks from the Rams because, you know, like I said, like
23:40the, you want, if you're trained with Los Angeles Rams, you want the picks to be far out.
23:45And ultimately, yes, it's not another first, but it's going to be the equivalent of at least I believe a high second, at least.
23:52Yeah. And football's unpredictable, Mina. When the Browns traded down from two to five in the 2025 NFL draft, I thought, my
23:59God, the Browns may have just gone from two to five.
24:02And in the process picked up an extra top 10 pick the following year.
24:07Cause I did not forecast the Jaguars to be a 13 and four football team.
24:11And there they were. Now, I don't think the Rams are going to go four and 13, but something happens to Matthew Stafford or who knows, right?
24:19Like that pick that we're all currently forecasting is, Hey, no lower than 28.
24:24You just never know. So in a draft that, and I know that sometimes fans get bothered when people say, Oh, next
24:30year's draft's the one that's going to be loaded.
24:33I would just tell you, and this has been reflected by the way NFL teams have moved picks is that NFL teams
24:40held their powder so much more in the 2026 NFL draft.
24:43We didn't see any team. When the chiefs moved up from nine to six in a different year, the cost to go
24:49from nine to six might literally be a first round pick, right?
24:53I mean, the dolphins made the Jalen Waddell trade that involved an extra first round picked.
24:58I think that was 11 to six, but still we see teams who put four or five spots in the first round and pay an extra one.
25:06The 2027 NFL draft is viewed by NFL teams.
25:09And I will tell you my early studies of 40 or so, some guys, you are sitting there saying to yourself, my
25:15goodness, it is going to be a draft cycle that could be as big as any draft cycle that we have seen in quite some time.
25:23So the Browns and the Jets are now incredibly well positioned.
25:27The Jets having three first round picks, Browns having two first round picks and the Browns being in a clear full blown
25:33rebuild because Miles Garrett did not lead them to many wins over the past couple of seasons.
25:38But having miles around was enough to stop you shy of saying, we're blowing this thing up.
25:43We're tearing it down to the studs. And that brings me to my final thought on this, which is not saying Miles
25:50Garrett is losing him is going to get you pick one, one necessarily.
25:54But I could imagine a scenario where it's Jen, you know, December and the Cardinals and the Jets and the Brown, everybody's competing.
26:01You know, starting night. It's already tanking this year.
26:04Okay. There's just going to. And you can just, Miles Garrett has single handedly won games for this team.
26:09It's five sacks in the game last year. The reverse is good, but I'm just saying it won't, it's not going to
26:16hurt their cause to not have Miles Garrett around.
26:19Might actually help it a little bit. So. Mark my words on that tanking point, by the way, Mina.
26:24Like I'm just June 2nd, whatever it is, like it's coming Jeremiah Smith.
26:28The team that I want to be this upcoming year, Mina is the team that's got a good young quarterback.
26:34Cardinals are going to be hard to beat. Yeah.
26:37But, but, but they need a quarterback, right? They need one, but I'm saying, I want to be the team this year.
26:44That's got a good young quarterback already that ends up with a high enough draft pick to take Jeremiah Smith.
26:50That's the team that I want to be this year because this kid is the closest thing to Julio Jones since Julio Jones.
26:57Uh, I, I was, I think it was Greg McElroy's podcast.
27:00I was listening to always college football, fellow Omaha pod show.
27:03Uh, uh, and he was saying that something like, uh, Jeremiah Smith is, is some ridiculously small number of yards away from
27:10becoming Ohio state's all time leading receiver. He's a true software.
27:13He's going to be a true junior this year.
27:16And you think about like Ohio state is along with LSU wide receiver you.
27:20And it's like, I'm just making this number of 89 yards away.
27:24You're like, there's no way you go back and check it.
27:27And you're like, Holy crap. He is in one game going to get to Ohio state's top of the leaderboard there.
27:34So I want to be the team. It's got a good young quarterback, but finishes like fourth or fifth in the draft
27:40order this upcoming year, because the tankers are going to be out in close to full force from Thanksgiving on.
27:46It's going to be a fascinating final month of the season.
27:50That's all I'll say. Yep. Um, okay. Speaking of trades and teams not wanting to give up 20, 27 picks, let's take
27:56a quick break, come back and talk about what was supposed to be the blockbuster trade of the day.
28:02And that's the AJ Brown trade. All right. We are back.
28:05AJ Brown, after this has been rumored for ever is now.
28:09It's funny because there was some rumors that the Rams were pushing for Brown, which kind of served as a smokescreen little
28:15bit about the Rams ending up going for miles Garrett.
28:18Um, but this was no secret. Uh, you know, it's been talked about for a while and ultimately we knew it was
28:25all going to be a post June 1st trade because of AJ Brown's, the cap implications for Philadelphia.
28:30Uh, so the trade compensation is a 20, 28 first rounder and then fricking Howie, a 20, 27 fifth because sure.
28:37Yeah. Um, the deal would have fallen apart otherwise.
28:39I guess you just see him at the last second being like, give me something, a little more, a little more, a little more.
28:47Um, okay. So I find this fascinating on both sides.
28:50I think the football ramifications for both teams are fascinating.
28:53I honestly, especially for Philadelphia, like I think schematically everything there, what the offense is going to look like.
28:58This is all, you know, bread, bread crumbs leading us to the 2026 season.
29:03But let's start with the Patriots. Um, Patriots field have been hunting for that receiver one for how long?
29:08Oh, long time. I mean, he's the AJ Brown is the most talented Patriots receiver since who?
29:13Randy. It's gotta be that. That's the territory. I think we're talking about Mina.
29:18They've obviously had unbelievable pass catchers, you know, perhaps the most dominant tight end ever in Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman was Mr.
29:25Clutch for this team. It's not like they stopped winning because it didn't have, you know, peak Randy Moss, but this is
29:31a franchise who probably as much as any team in the past 25 years has done it with more of strength numbers amongst the pass catchers.
29:39And now they have their wide receiver one. And there are some concerns.
29:43We can dive into those for sure with AJ Brown getting up there in age concerns about this knee injury.
29:49Wouldn't surprise me if he's on the veteran plan from day one of training camp on.
29:54But I also think there's a chance that we have perhaps been sort of robbed of what the best of AJ Brown
30:01looks like because last year was an absolutely dismal fit between player and scheme and probably player and team as well.
30:07Like AJ Brown being unhappy was one of the least kept secrets or one of the worst kept secrets in the league, right?
30:14And say whatever you want. Like, you know, Jalen Hurts is a more accomplished player than Drake May, period, end of story.
30:20A Super Bowl champion, the best player in a Super Bowl, a second occurrence.
30:25Drake May is a better passer than Jalen Hurts.
30:27That's just inarguable, right? Drake May should make life better for AJ Brown.
30:31Drake May is on the short list for best deep ball throwers in the NFL.
30:36AJ Brown is, I think, along with, you know, a couple others, amongst the best deep ball threats in the league.
30:42Still, yes, still over the past four years, AJ Brown, 18 receiving touchdowns on 20 plus air yard throws.
30:48Number one in the NFL in that stretch, right?
30:51Like this guy down the field is as potent as basically any player in the league.
30:55So on paper, it's pretty simple to see why this deal essentially agreed two months ago.
31:00We just had to wait for June 1st to come around because of the cap implications that you managed.
31:06You mentioned. You laid this out very well. It's a great marriage of quarterback and player.
31:11Yeah. I think that's worth stressing because May was good at just basically everything last season.
31:16But he really loves and is really good at those tight window throws.
31:20So good at throwing guys open. And who's the best tight window receiver in the NFL?
31:24If you just look at the numbers. Over the last three years on tight window throws, AJ Brown, first in yards per
31:31rat run, first in catches, first in first downs.
31:34Wow. Tells you everything you've ever heard. The best quarterback on tight window throws last year in precision pass rate, QBR, completion percentage over expected, everything.
31:42It just works. And the thing I do think though that's interesting or notable about New England too is like I actually
31:48thought the receivers last year really outperformed my expectations.
31:51Like Stavantex was quite good during the regular season, especially against man coverage, you know, and, um, occasion booty who we could
31:58talk about in a second really emerged. But I will say in the post season, I think you saw the receiving group get exposed.
32:05Now the whole offense got exposed. The offensive line was by far the bigger culprit.
32:09May himself didn't play his best ball, but something that caught my eye, I was pulling up some stats from the post
32:16season versus press coverage in the post season. Okay.
32:19Drake Bay was four for 17. And again, some of that's on him.
32:23I'm not absolving altogether, but there were a lot of instances of guys not getting open.
32:27And I do, I can't, I, you know, I think they've been, I'm Brown for a while, but I can't help but
32:34wonder if the new England front office felt like strongly after the playoffs.
32:38Okay. We really got to level up here. Yeah, for sure.
32:41You have to imagine that was part of it.
32:44I mean, I would say physicality across the board, like just being bigger across the board was something the Patriots needed to do.
32:51They got smacked around in the Superbowl, especially, but they got smacked around by the Texans defense in that divisional game.
32:57I wouldn't say it was quite as egregious in the Broncos AFC championship game, but the Patriots met their match offensively during the playoffs last year.
33:05They had to become a more physical team on both sides of the ball.
33:09But AJ Brown certainly helps in the wide receiver room.
33:12And I would take it, I would zoom out a little bit here to me now, which I think cannot be overlooked.
33:19Two things can be true. Once the Patriots had an unbelievably remarkable season last year.
33:24Drake may is the freaking truth. If we're starting a draft for a player to lead your franchise for the next 10
33:30years, he's at least in the conversation for the first overall pick.
33:34At least in my opinion. Right? No question. And the Patriots' biggest improvement this year might just be that Drake may just
33:40gets that much better going into year three. At the same time, Patriots also had a schedule that we agreed during the regular season was very favorable.
33:49And it did feel like so far this offseason, and we still have, what, two months before training camps really get going.
33:55Other teams have caught up more than New England sort of outpaced the field, right?
34:00Their big moves up to this point were notable.
34:02But, like, Draymond Jones comes in. Caleb on chase on amongst the guys that go out, right?
34:08I mean, they did some shuffling on both sides of the ball.
34:11But I don't think that you're, even their first round pick, Caleb Lomu, like, there's a pathway to Caleb Lomu being their
34:18sixth offensive lineman this year, which is totally fine, by the way.
34:21He's a really good player. But I didn't feel like the Patriots, you know, Romeo Dobbs in for Stephon Diggs going out.
34:28I don't feel, I didn't feel prior to this move, like, the Patriots offense was decidedly scarier, whereas around the AFC, you've
34:35got what we believe will be a healthier Chiefs team, a healthy Lamar Jackson, a new look Ravens team, Joe Burrow and
34:41the Bengals loading up on defense, the Bills trading for DJ Moore.
34:45There's a lot of examples of AFC teams who push their chips further into the middle of the table.
34:51And until the A.J. Brown trade was complete, for me, the Patriots team didn't feel decidedly different than the one that walked off the field last season.
34:59I think it's a really good point. I also think we're going to see what happens when you get a true number
35:06one, which is everybody benefits from his presence on the field.
35:09Suddenly the receiver room, like, just really works, right?
35:12Like, Romeo Dobbs is a phenomenal number two. Sure.
35:14And then you have some combination of Douglas, Collins, Kyle Williams.
35:18See what happens with Kayshawn Booty, who feels a little bit redundant with Brown.
35:22It was honestly excellent last year, might be potential trade bait.
35:25And then the run game. The Patriots did not run the ball well last season.
35:30But part of that was, there's a lot of reasons, but some of it was, despite the fact that they had an
35:36incredibly explosive and efficient passing attack, they still face light boxes at a below average rate.
35:41That's going to change, I think. So, you know, you're going to face less man coverage because teams don't want to play man against A.J.
35:49Like, there's just going to be a trickle down effect of having that true number one X receiver that is going to
35:55help not just Drake May, but the entire group in New England.
35:59This applies to every time a star player, and A.J.
36:02Brown is a star player, gets traded. And I'd be curious if you think it matters.
36:07Doesn't matter in this case. Matters a lot. However you deem it worthy.
36:11A.J. Brown, I think, is pissed off about how he's perceived right now, right?
36:15I think he was pissed off with how the offense was last year.
36:19But I think A.J. Brown probably feels like he's got something to prove.
36:23Does that matter? Do you think that matters? Like, are we going to get the best version of A.J.
36:28Brown? Stefan Diggs is sort of the famous example of a guy who gets traded from Minnesota to Buffalo.
36:34He was a great player. Went for a package of picks, including a first rounder.
36:39And then immediately was like, so motivated to prove everybody wrong.
36:42Or prove everybody, I guess the bill's right, that for the next four seasons, he had 444 catches and took off.
36:48Diggs was much younger than A.J. Brown is right now.
36:51But I do think A.J. Brown is probably motivated to prove some skeptics maybe in Philadelphia wrong.
36:5728's not that. Actually, it's funny because people were comparing it to the wattle trade and how much Denver gave up.
37:03And I was like, yeah, but he's a lot younger than A.J.
37:06Brown. Then I looked it up. I was like, wait, you're younger than A.J.
37:11Brown. Yeah. 27 versus 28. I would have guessed like three years for whatever reason.
37:15Same. I guess he must have been older when he was drafted and I just forgot.
37:20You know, that said, the knee, definitely something to monitor.
37:23And if this blows up or backfires, that would probably be why.
37:27And we'll see. Like I, you know, like all of these trades, like we talked about injuries are always going to be the thing you can't predict.
37:35Clearly, they felt comfortable enough with it to trade it.
37:38I guess let me ask you that before we can as we kind of transition to the New England part.
37:44Do you think this was enough for the Philadelphia Eagles in terms of compensation?
37:48I think it was because it was about as good as I think they were going to get.
37:54I think for the Patriots and I always laugh whenever we it's not often, but when we hear of a conditional trade,
38:00I'm just going to make up a fake Adam Schefter tweet here for a second.
38:05You know, whatever the Vikings are trading a conditional third that can become a second to the Saints.
38:10If insert X wide receiver plays in at least 15 games and over 50% of the snaps.
38:15And then when the Vikings who are trading away, you know, the third that could become the second, they announced it as a third.
38:23The Saints, the acquiring team who could get a second announced it as a second.
38:27Right. So it's like, I'm sure if you're asking the Patriots, I think from their perspective, yes, it's of course it's a first round pick.
38:35Like there's, there's nothing, there's no gray area there, but a first round pick two years from now carries different value from
38:41a first round pick in the present year or even a year from now.
38:45Right. The player, the Eagles are going to acquire with that pick cannot influence their roster until the fall of 2028.
38:52Like that's an eternity in football terms. So the Patriots are probably comfortable with it being almost like, like a premium second,
38:58as opposed to a first round pick. Meanwhile, if you're Philly, it's a first round pick that can be repurposed elsewhere because
39:05they could trade that first round pick as part of a deal to acquire somebody prior to the 2028 NFL draft.
39:11On top of that, if you're Philly, one thing they have been as good as literally anybody in the league since Howie
39:18Roseman took over as their GM is being a step ahead to replace players before they're actually gone.
39:23And now you're up a first round pick over the next two drafts, which will enable you to draft a player that
39:30probably plays a position that you don't need in that year.
39:33But you know what? That's where they have struck gold so often.
39:37Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter and back-to-back drafts and guys who played a position where they already had players like Milton Williams.
39:44Not that Milton was ever an every down guy for them, but like they had talent and they just said, we're going
39:50to keep pouring more and more talent into that spot because it's going to become a need soon.
39:56So I think it was enough for Philadelphia, especially in the context similar to Cleveland and Myles Garrett of a player being ready to move on.
40:04I just can't imagine, or I couldn't imagine a world in which AJ Brown went back to Philadelphia happy for the 2026 season.
40:11If the offense in Philadelphia was going to be the same this year as it was last year, not even, I'm not
40:17even like if obviously if they kept Petula, but like if they, if the scheme was the same as it's been, not
40:24even just last year, but basically with AJ Brown specifically predicated on ISO ball receivers winning their one-on-ones quarterback.
40:30And the gun, I would feel pretty bad about leaving.
40:33Yeah. But the, you got to take a step back and look at this thing in its totality, which is AJ Brown
40:39being traded is part of what I think we all agree is going to be a pretty significant transformation for this offense,
40:46a transformation signaled by the hiring of an offensive play caller from the.
40:50Backer. Shanahan, LeFleur. Yeah. Sorry. The tree, the tree backers, which I want to get to in a second.
40:55Um, by everything we've been hearing by the way, out of like OTA, like that they are very much going to be more of an under center team.
41:04Yeah. By the players that they've chosen drafting Makai lemon, not even just drafting a receiver like the other, they're going to
41:11replace AJ, but like, obviously he's a very different receiver from AJ, but the style of receiver that he is, this office
41:17is going to look really different field. And so I guess that's what I want to talk about next.
41:23Like, how do you feel about the Eagles going in a different direction offensively?
41:27Because I think it's one of the more interesting storylines in football.
41:31I would say it actually has less to do with the trading of AJ Brown and more to do with just what
41:37does Jalen hurts look like in this offense? I know the offense was much maligned the past couple of years and Jalen
41:44has famously had instability amongst play callers during his college and pro career felt to me though, like they, as much as
41:51they could try to make Jalen comfortable in Philadelphia last year.
41:54Right. And this was not, you know, I think some of the concepts that we're talking about in these, in these, the
42:01tree offenses you described at Mina is like on rhythm, on time, passing games.
42:05Like we're going to see more West coast principles.
42:08It felt like at times with Jalen, he is a quarterback who at times can be a drop back, drop back, see it, throw it type of quarterback.
42:16As opposed to hard play action, hit your back foot, bam, drive a football to a receiver that maybe hasn't even made
42:23his break to the middle of the field, but you're just trusting he's going to hit that landmark.
42:28So it's a, I don't know about wholesale, but it's close to it.
42:32This is a gigantic test for this Philadelphia offense.
42:35And I think Jalen hurts specifically. And by the way, if, if he is uncomfortable with this, it doesn't sound like he
42:41is by any language coming out of Philadelphia is like, he seems over the moon.
42:46He does seem over the moon by it. But if the results for this are a little bit shaky coming out of
42:53the gates for Philly, like if you're Jalen hurts, you are by all means emboldened to say, I'm G like I'm a super bowl MVP.
43:00Like I'm, I'm the most valuable piece here. Like let's get back to some of what was what, what I'm more comfortable with.
43:07So it's a gigantic test for Philly. I think they're going to be awesome this year.
43:12Like I'm not at all down on Philadelphia, but I am comparably curious about how this offense looks as you are.
43:18I think hurts is really going into the season with, you know, like the desire to prove everyone wrong in terms of
43:25saying, yeah, he doesn't draw over the middle of the field.
43:28He never will. Oh, he has, he wants to run things his way style of offense at the cost of, I think
43:35like every, again, this is just interpreting every, all the language coming out of Philly right now.
43:40When he talks about the new scheme and playing under center and the coordinator, it's very positive.
43:45And like, if, if he buys in and if he X and, and, and, you know, by the way, I do want
43:52to say one other thing, like in the McVay Chan hand tree or whatever, there's different branches, right?
43:57Like the Packers offense comes from that. And, you know, like Jordan love was under center way more than, you know, Jalen hurts for sure.
44:05And there's more play action and whatever, but, um, and the more condensed formations and things like that, but it's different from
44:11like San Francisco or like you do see, um, love throws deep outside the numbers a bit more, which is something that hurts is very good at.
44:19So there's definitely some room for flexibility that the Packers also had a pretty good play action game out of the gun.
44:26And with, um, you know, like some of the stuff they would do the spinner play action.
44:31You remember like that, that was a Packers thing, you know?
44:35So I do think for Manion, it's going to be like, Hey, let me take this concept and then let me see
44:41what within this concept that within, within this scheme, where does my quarterback want to live?
44:46But hypothetically it should make hurts his life a lot easier.
44:49Like just watching Philadelphia last year, the level of difficulty always felt like it was turned up to a hundred for both the quarterback and the receivers.
44:57It's like, go in, go in, go in. Yeah.
45:00And one thing I want to highlight, I was just looking at this up, uh, you know, Philadelphia's offense was below average
45:07and a lot of things, but one thing where there's a huge discrepancy between them and Green Bay is on short passes, zero to 10 yards.
45:15The Packers were third league wide in EPA per play 0.19, which is very high for short passes.
45:20The Eagles were 22nd 0.02. I really think those little easy buttons.
45:24And then by the way, they added Josh Grisard, who's a, comes from Tampa, very good screen offense.
45:29It just feels like field. If Hertz is bought in, you think about the players.
45:34They have Barkley catching passes, Makai lemon yards after the catch.
45:37It could be a lot easier for everybody. That's the idea here, Mina.
45:41And so I don't think their success by the way is, is dependent upon AJ Brown's presence or lack thereof.
45:47So like if the Eagles offense sputters and has a tough year this year and they don't sort of realize some of
45:54the potential that we are discussing, I'm not going to go, well, they shouldn't have traded AJ Brown.
45:59Like it, like it was time with Miles Garrett.
46:02It was time with AJ Brown. It was exhausting.
46:04I was exhausted by like sitting there watching the Eagles games going, is he really reading like, you know, whatever, the second
46:11edition of whatever that book that he famously read in the sidelines was at a different.
46:16Inter excellence. Their inter excellence. Yes. Is he reading inner transcendence now?
46:20Like whatever. You know, like it's not because of AJ Brown being there or not.
46:24It is just, it's just a big scheme shift.
46:27And I don't know about rare, but we, we just don't see stuff like this that often.
46:32A lot of times it's, you know, you could, if you have a quarterback at the caliber of AJ Brown, it's what
46:39do we do to kind of match that player's skillset?
46:42Philadelphia is like, we're pouring the scheme out in a way that we feel is best for football.
46:47Not, not necessarily our quarterback in the way he has played for the last six or seven years for us.
46:53It's a great football story to monitor. All right.
46:56So there's enough time left. I've decided for me to do my fantasy lightning round with you.
47:01Let's go. For those who don't, I mean, people know, like how often do you guys podcast or like, what's your schedule?
47:07So we get back going in earnest, July 20th, I think late July with, I was going to say on a specific
47:14day, but I realized I'm just assuming that date late July for fantasy focus for five days a week, all the way through the NFL regular season.
47:22And then hopefully you'll see more of us during the off season in future years.
47:27But as you know, fantasy, the lack of interest from the casuals is certainly not there from January until late July.
47:33So, but we get rolling. I think it's like 110 shows in 22 weeks or something like that.
47:39If you don't already, obviously listen to fantasy focus.
47:41Excellent podcast. All right. So I got quick questions for you.
47:45Number one, this comes off of our last conversation.
47:47So there's this feeling that the Packers offense is going to turn into, or not Packers, geez, Louise, the Eagles is going
47:54to turn into more of an everybody eats style offense, a la the Packers.
47:58Although I will say, you know, Devontae, we kind of elided this and I talked about it earlier.
48:04I think Devontae is so capable of taking on more.
48:07And I think the Eagles think that, which is part of this, the calculus here.
48:11That said, do you feel comfortable drafting or prioritizing any of these Eagles skill players after what we saw last year?
48:17Would you include Saquon Barkley in that conversation? I'll include Saquon Barkley.
48:21But I'm a Saquon dynasty holder and it wasn't.
48:24Yeah. It wasn't pretty last year. I mean, one of the biggest mistakes that we make though in fantasy is when an
48:30elite player has a pedestrian year, assuming that like the pedestrian days are now upon us.
48:35Um, and that, that would be the case of Saquon Barkley.
48:39Like the idea of Saquon Barkley being the best player in fantasy football next season.
48:43It's not that crazy, right? I mean, he's what at worst, the fourth best running back in the league, probably in terms of talent, you know, B.
48:51John Gibbs, CMC, Saquon, that's whatever. Maybe you want to argue he's fifth or sixth, but we've definitely seen crazier things than
48:58Saquon Barkley being the top scoring running back in all of fantasy football.
49:02Him and Devontae Smith are the two for sure.
49:05Everybody else will just be kind of a value play like Octavian Wicks is like your favorite film watchers, favorite wide receiver.
49:11Right. Uh, and Hollywood Brown will probably have a couple moments.
49:14Uh, and Makai Lemon is a rookie. It brings a ton of sizzle and excitement and he might have 72 catches this year.
49:21PPR beast. Um, but Devontae and Saquon are the two guys that based off current costs are worth sort of the premium
49:28that are being paid on them right now. Saquon top probably seven or 10 running back in terms of where you're seeing
49:35him ranked right now in fantasy and Devontae probably creeping into that top 20 with AJ Brown gone.
49:40One would help for hope for Saquon too. This could have been part of the Eagles conversation.
49:45Like the, a big part of the tree scheme and perhaps the most important part is knitting the run in the past
49:52together and making everything look the same. It felt like last year they were so obvious running the ball that he was constantly contacted in the backfield.
50:00So one could hope that this scheme change in addition to, you know, how he runs under center and all that would
50:07help him just because it won't be as predictable when he's getting the rock.
50:11Totally agree. Uh, okay. Second question. Number two. Uh, so you talked about, um, people casual is not having interest this time
50:18of year, but I, as I alluded to, I am in a very intense dynasty league.
50:22I've been in it for years. Uh, I was, before we started taping, I was bragging about the fact that last year I got Harold fan and junior.
50:31I feel like that was my big coup. Uh, cause it was like in the founders, you know, it's like, uh, it's a very deep league.
50:39So of the rookies and you mentioned lemon, um, you know, but not necessarily your answer here.
50:44Who are two that you love? Doesn't have to be the top.
50:47It can be the top. Just two rookies that you really like for fantasy purposes.
50:52Okay. So we should just address Jeremiah love because everybody knows him.
50:56Um, and, and the question isn't how, like, is he going to go high?
51:00It's how high he's going to go. I've looked across ESPN rankings and it seems like I'm a little lower on Jeremiah
51:06love in terms of overall rank compared to some of our colleagues.
51:10I had him at the 21st ranked player overall.
51:13Uh, we do this project in May, June, July, where we just do a series of mock drafts and it kind of
51:19creates like this date, this, this set of data points about where guys are going on average players that we tend to
51:26have an affinity for players that we are avoiding consciously or ups or subconsciously.
51:30What I've noted so far is that Jeremiah love is going way earlier than that.
51:35Uh, you mentioned the Cardinals as a strong content contender for the number one pick in the draft.
51:40This upcoming year, Mina, uh, Tyler Algier, James Connor for now still there, right?
51:44Like I have Tyler Algier on my dynasty team and please trade him Arizona.
51:49Please trade Green Bay. Perhaps Green Bay. You know, just like, I think he deserves more run.
51:54And he's, he's like, like say whatever you want from a fan.
51:57Like I am, I was as bothered by him being utilized as the goal line as anybody, uh, over the past few years.
52:04But like, if you're going to have Tyler Algier is part of your pack rotation, he is deserving of some of the short yardage and goal line work.
52:13Um, I'm concerned about a little bit of seeding work to Tyler Algier at the goal line.
52:18And then a little bit of just like, we saw this with Ashton Gentty.
52:22I don't care how dynamic you are as a runner.
52:25Like if you're getting blown up a yard behind the line of scrimmage, it's going to be hard to have a bunch of protecting games.
52:33And, uh, Gentty wasn't this like catastrophic disappointment last year, Mina, but it was an example of shiny object syndrome taking over.
52:39It was in hell. He was in hell, but we could have, you could have easily taken a Derek Henry or a
52:46Christian McCaffrey where we were taking Ashton Gentty last year and, and, and just been fine.
52:51Um, they, they had the each, you know, McCaffrey was the best player in fantasy football last year.
52:56Henry was a bit more of a roller coaster, but the peaks were so, so good.
53:01Uh, Jeremiah love, and I'll just say this, I understand he was the next fantasy skill player taken in the draft, but
53:08I do think I'll just mention him. Cause I do think that I'm going to wind up being higher on Carnell Tate
53:14as I get through my updates of my rankings this off season compared to most, because I think, and I'm guilty of this too.
53:22I allowed the idea of Carnell Tate being like a really good number two wide receiver, as opposed to a legitimate number
53:28one wide receiver invade my brain too much during the pre-draft process.
53:32Now, when I'm watching Jeremiah Smith, his teammate, that is exactly what a wide receiver one looks like, but there are also players right now in the NFL.
53:40We've talked about some on the show, but think about guys like Puka or Amonra, or maybe even Jackson Smith and Jigba
53:47who don't necessarily, and I'm using air quotes here, look like a number one wide receiver and have become absurdly productive.
53:53So I think that Carnell Tate is due for just a monster year because he is as pro ready as any prospect in this entire draft class.
54:01I felt that way about him throughout the process and he went forth overall, perhaps richer than some thought, but I think
54:08Carnell Tate is going to be a heck of a player this year.
54:12A lot of good buzz about Carnell Tate coming out of Tennessee.
54:16Seems like it, yeah. Yeah. The spring buzz is, you know, I'm always worried about that, but you know, people like it.
54:22Okay. Well, who is the next question is, who are you a little apprehensive of in a way that perhaps we should
54:29have been more apprehensive of the situation that Gentie was walking into?
54:32And I, and this is a lot about situation more than the players.
54:36Yeah. Well, uh, in some ways, so like I, I, I was, as you and I discussed on the day of the
54:43draft prior to going down me, uh, Jordan Tyson, a guy that I thought was really talented on the one hand, you're
54:50like, he's going to an offense that absolutely hummed down the stretch, right?
54:54It really played well down the stretch. He, he's going into a good situation.
54:58Um, it also might be that that good situation already has enough established parties that they don't necessarily need somebody else to
55:04come in and feast at this like significant target chair.
55:07I'm going to Travis H and I got myself.
55:10I didn't screw it up there. Travis H hand, which still getting you to used to there, um, in the backfield, do you want Johnson?
55:18Have a role. Devon Bailey will have a little bit of a role.
55:22So, um, Tyson just, I feel like that offense, uh, has enough pieces already around it and has a good enough, like Chris Olave.
55:29I mean, that was remarkable last season. Whereas in Tennessee, the competition for Carnell Tate, I think Wanda Robinson's a solid player,
55:36but not at the level of Chris Olave. So, um, Tyson, I'm a little more.
55:40I hope you're right. Cause Olave, no, I know no one cares about his entertainment, but he's on my, no, no, we care about it.
55:48And I love the pick for football reasons, but there, there is that as a dynasty manager.
55:53So when the picks come in, you're like, like, like I said, Algier, I was like, come on, Arizona.
55:58And yeah, okay. So Brown's receivers would be easy candidates for this category as well.
56:03Casey Concepcion and also Denzel Boston quarterback, Mary go round could be in place.
56:07This team, again, they might just be trying to be bad down the stretch.
56:11I mean, I'm not trying to be, I know that the NBA just is about to enact this dramatic reform, this three,
56:18two, one lottery system that frankly, I'm still kind of confused by.
56:22Um, that being said, the NFL might be having conversation at the end of the season about whether they need to do some things differently.
56:29It's much harder to tank in the NFL because the sample size is really small.
56:34You might be two and 10 while you're trying and just not try as much and go two and 15.
56:40Um, but there are going to be some teams at the end of the season that are making business decisions.
56:46Go back and look at some of the notable things over the past few years, teams that could have had players.
56:52If they had just lost that one inconsequential game in mid to late December, I think teams are going to be doing that this year as well.
57:00I would be very wary of the Browns receivers this season in dynasty though.
57:05If Boston, I mean, I like, I love conception.
57:07I'm sorry about it. But if Boston is a dropper for the reason people, you know, just apprehensive other team, that's a
57:14guy I'd like to have a piece of for the future, because I do think he could be a touchdown machine when
57:21they get quarterback, but you got to have the long view there.
57:24Yeah. All right. Um, we talked about him. Uh, this is a question I think it's going to be on a lot of people's minds.
57:32So Ashton Gentry, very tough season last year. Marion Hampton flashed a bit more, but battled injury, of course.
57:37And also, you know, the offensive line was hell between the two of those backs, those first round backs from last year,
57:44who is more likely to make the fantasy leap this season?
57:47I think it's Ashton Gentry for a couple of reasons.
57:50First of all, we saw the Houston Texans game by Ashton Gentry was one of the single most remarkable performances of last
57:57season by any player in the NFL against the Avengers defense.
58:00Ashton Gentry smoked them like all time ridiculousness. Um, that was crazy.
58:04Like, I still can't believe that took place. And I think it was right in the fantasy playoffs too, where it was
58:11like, all right, Ashton Gentry is the obvious fade this week.
58:14He's so talented and he is a pass catcher, not a Jeremiah.
58:18Not a level of a pass catcher, but enough of a pass catcher.
58:21And then with, I tell you one thing that's been kind of gnawing at me this out, this off season is Keaton
58:28Mitchell got two years and $10 million to go to the Chargers.
58:32I also have him. He's, he's like kind of good, you know, like everything about that signing screams.
58:37Mike McDaniel told us to do this, right? Like this is the guy he wanted.
58:42He's from your lips to God's ears. Now he also played behind a freight train in, in Baltimore and hardly played behind Derek Henry.
58:49And Amarin Hampton is a good player as well.
58:52No doubt. Um, I'm just like, when we're talking about how do you call one player RB nine and one player RB
58:5812, these are the kind of slivers that make the difference.
59:02So the presence of, of Keaton Mitchell, he's one of my favorite late round targets.
59:06If you play best ball out there, it's one of my favorite sort of late round best ball targets as well.
59:12There's going to be a few weeks where it's like, he just had six catches for 109 yards and a touchdown.
59:19What? It's always the week I don't start in fields, but yeah, I hear you.
59:23Um, I also will say about Gentie, we know Clint Kubiak likes to pound that rock.
59:28So he's going to get opportunities. These, I think the, and obviously the litter bomb acquisition helps a lot.
59:34There are questions kind of the rest of the line.
59:37Uh, okay. Question five. I wrote is Malik Willis, a sneaky, good fantasy pickup.
59:41So the Miami offense, not great. Pass catchers pretty bad.
59:44This is a team that's going to run a lot.
59:47You got a dual threat quarterback. He was an unbelievable runner who was a good passer last season too.
59:53My skepticism is not about him. It's more about his circumstances.
59:56But we have seen this prototype have success before.
59:59Do you think despite the group of pass catchers, he might be worth keeping an eye on?
60:04He's, uh, well, I'll say this, Mina, two things.
60:07Um, he's the first mid twenties individual that has moved to Miami to make 20 plus million dollars per year that I've
60:13ever felt bad for in human history. Um, he, he, he, I just, I don't know if he signed up for what he's now dealing.
60:21I mean, sign up for it to the extent that you sign up for these things.
60:26Right. Uh, but it is a very, very thin wide receiver room there.
60:30It's going to be tough for Malik Willis to have big time numbers.
60:34That being said, in fantasy, you don't need big time numbers in the conventional sense.
60:38You don't have to be able to run the football and he can do that.
60:43And he's free. I mean, he is free right now in drafts.
60:46Like you are not on average getting Malik Willis in the first 16 rounds of a 10 team ESPN league.
60:52Something that I've seen a lot of in recent years is the growth of two quarterbacks per team.
60:58All the like hardcore analyst analyst leaks for a long time, Mina, where you just take one quarterback.
61:03And if you draft the Josh Allen or a Jalen hurts, you're just burning a roster spot by adding a backup because
61:10they're going to start one game for you when Josh Allen or Jalen hurts goes on a buy.
61:15Um, or if you're waiting until round 10 and you're getting attack Prescott, you can just grab somebody off of waivers and stream them.
61:22If Dak doesn't work out, whatever it is, um, we're starting to see more of a movement towards two quarterbacks for those that wait.
61:30I, one of the more popular parries that I've seen so far this off season in mock drafts is Trevor Lawrence and
61:36Brock Purdy guys who Trevor Lawrence was especially great for the last eight games of the season.
61:41Purdy was unbelievable for the last four or five games, except for when they played Seattle.
61:46Um, so I believe that Malik Willis is one of those perfect, like you're, you're waiting on quarterback and you're going to
61:53take two and Malik Willis, who's going for zero can be added as the final pick in your draft.
61:59I would do it. I have, I've, I've, where I'm at mine is two quarterbacks and my quarterbacks are Jared Goff and
62:05Jackson Dart, which I feel pretty good about. Yeah.
62:08Could not be more diametrically opposed, but, um, yeah, I wish I had Willis someone else in my league or he has him.
62:15Did you see the Jeremiah Love clip of him and Jared Goff?
62:19No. Oh my God. It's so fun. He was on the same Brown podcast and they were doing like, who is this player?
62:26And just had like, look at it. What? I'm on Ross St.
62:29Brown. He was like, he's my quarterback. He's like, oh really?
62:32He's like, yeah, my quarterback. It was amazing. Um, I'm sure there are people, I'm sure there's, you know, like actors you
62:39could put in front of me that I would have literally, it's like, oh, that's Tom Hanks.
62:44Oh wow. Didn't know that. Um, I, I'd be good at like survivor characters and football players.
62:49I don't know how much NFL players also don't pay attention to other NFL teams.
62:54Not at all. Especially outside their own division. It's pretty funny.
62:57Yeah. Um, okay. Question six. We're doing 10. Chase running backs not been great.
63:01Yeah. Are we buying Kenneth Walker or do we think he's going to be overpriced?
63:06Who, who's impeding Kenneth Walker from having like 280 touches this year?
63:10And that's a conservative number, 280 carries plus like maybe 50 touches.
63:13I don't even know who, who's the number two there.
63:16They took Emmett Johnson. They took, yeah, they didn't like that pick.
63:20Yeah. Yeah. They didn't like that, but I'm just not like totally sold that Johnson's going to come in and like meaningfully
63:26impact the role of Kenneth Walker, the third. He was so clearly the guy that like, it feels like they wanted Kenneth
63:33Walker, the third, as much as basically any team wanted a single player in free agency this off season.
63:39All their woes can be cured by Walker, who of course was awesome when it mattered most for your Seahawks Super Bowl MVP.
63:46Um, there were times when which the Seahawks, it struck me as the Seahawks coaching staff, not always fully trusting him.
63:52Um, he's one of those guys that it seemed like sometimes they wanted him like sometimes four yards was good enough for them on a given run.
64:00And he'd have the, the, the, the occasional pension for like, Hey, this two yard run could become a 10 yard run if I bounced it outside.
64:08And instead it becomes a negative two yard run.
64:11Um, but anyways, um, he's going to have an absolutely monster year.
64:15Yeah. He's inside. I want to say he's like, are we 12 for me overall right now?
64:20Big year coming. Yeah. Yeah. Cheese offense, even with its limitations last year, faced tons of light boxes, still Patrick Mahomes.
64:26You know, we'll see when he, his availability, but he's going to be the right.
64:31Like you're not, I mean, he's sounds like it, but I think your point about just like who's competing and also just like that was all they did.
64:39Yes. Yeah. Uh, okay. Uh, another player on the move.
64:42Can Kyler revive Justin Jefferson? Who was, you know, one of the fantasy letdowns, obviously last season relative to expectations around it.
64:49Yeah. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Uh, one of the issues with, uh, applying logic to players for like a prolonged period
64:55of time is that the year that it doesn't work out, you have to wonder whether you were like misaligned with your
65:02logic for the years prior prior, but every year it's, Hey, the thing about Justin Jefferson.
65:07Is he's quarterback agnostic, right? He can get the job done with guys like Jaron Hall and Nick Mullins, JJ McCarthy.
65:13He's going to be good. He's 10th overall pick in the draft.
65:17And then it was, they had so little chemistry and it was such a tough watch last year.
65:22It sometimes looked like they had never met. It was now I'm sure Justin Jefferson and NFL players either don't like to
65:29hear this kind of analysis or just don't care for it at all.
65:33Uh, don't, don't even, don't even acknowledge it. He was the single least enjoyable player to watch in fantasy football last season.
65:40It has nothing to do with Justin Jefferson. Like I think I could go to court and pretty credibly argue he's the best wide receiver in the NFL.
65:48And yet this poor guy last year, it was like his quarterbacks were trying to.
65:52Yeah. Remember how LeBron had that 10 point streak going for whatever it was like 20 years.
65:58It was like, Justin was riding some streak that his quarterbacks were trying to see end.
66:02Like, Hey, you know, Justin's had at least a thousand yards, whatever it is, five straight seasons.
66:08They're like, yeah, you want to tempt me on that?
66:11I'll tell you what it's look. I'll tell you what it looks like to have 824 yards this year.
66:16Oh my God. It was tough. And honestly, to his credit handled it all pretty well.
66:21Justin seems like he is that dude. Like for his talent as he is, he's got an emotional intelligence that is incredibly high.
66:28I think my one concern or fear or question is whether or not Tyler, Kyler, who is undeniably an upgrade.
66:34I've said this a million times can get his deep ball back because it's really fallen off.
66:39Um, and cause that would be anything I'm with Jefferson who really should benefit from that if he can get it back.
66:46But I'd like to see it. But like you said, it's Justin Jefferson and Kyler has had great chemistry in the past before Marvin Harrison Jr.
66:54With wide receiver ones, uh, which brings me to Arizona question eight.
66:57Does the Arizona quarterback, uh, uh, scary you off everyone in Arizona outside of Jeremiah love.
67:02I saw a hilarious tweet, Johnny venerable, who does a great job.
67:06Did you see the tweet? He covers the Cardinals.
67:09He's been so, you should follow him. I, I, I really like his show.
67:13He's been, they've been Cardinals bloggers and fans have been so funny about the Cardinals.
67:17Uh, and he was like, I'm paraphrasing the Rams are trading for miles Garrett and Jacoby Brissette is holding out.
67:23One NFC West team is trading for miles Garrett.
67:26Another NFC West team, his quarterback is holding out like whatever.
67:29The 27th best starting quarterback is holding out, you know, the question.
67:33I don't think it matters for the fantasy value of these guys much when we're the other, uh, there were, we used
67:40to call it Blake Bortling his way to success.
67:42Cause Bortles for a few years there was like this fantasy rockstar.
67:46But if you turned the game on in the second quarter, you're like, how on earth does Blake Bortles have 42 passing
67:53yards and interception and negative 0.8 fantasy points. Then you'd like come back two hours later and you're like, holy crap, Blake Bortles just scored 21 points.
68:01Let's go baby. Uh, that was Jacoby Brissette last year who just kept on going.
68:05He had this unbelievable streak of top 12 finishes.
68:08I don't think it matters that much. This Mina, I think that a lot of their offensive production could come in garbage time.
68:15I'm just, I have McBride, uh, who is one of my all time.
68:19Thanks. I truly think when I got him that after the first year, I texted you a picture of myself as Belichick.
68:25Not a great con for a GM, but my point is I think I gave myself laser eyes.
68:31Uh, I, I, I, I, I'm desperately hoping that McBride can still thrive despite whatever.
68:35I do also like the memes from Cardo's fans of Carson Beck being like in a picture with like, uh, JSN, Miles Garrett and, uh, uh, Chris McCaffrey.
68:44All right. Second question. Or last night question. Not second question.
68:47If George Pickens is a Dallas Cowboy this year and is playing and there's no holdout and whatever.
68:53We'll know by the time, you know, would you rather have CD lamb or George Pickens?
68:57CD lamb for a couple of reasons. So I do think that like talent wise, they're in the same zip code.
69:04I don't think we need to sit here and like, yeah, he's definitely better.
69:08No, like these guys are both ridiculously talented. One of them was an all pro last year.
69:13It wasn't CD lamb. The talent isn't the question.
69:16It just George, if he does play, he's not going to have a long-term deal with the Cowboys.
69:21As they have said, that creates the very popular dynamic that comes into play when a guy's on a contract year.
69:28And if you're it's, it's week seven, your hamstring just feels a touch tight.
69:32It's I'm not pointing to those thing feels a hundred percent.
69:35I've got too much to lose and not enough to gain.
69:38So it's that risk. It's George Pickens. Part of the reason why last year was so special was that George kept his
69:45head on straight for the most part, right? There's a reason why he was also available after three years in Pittsburgh.
69:51It was that you'd go three games with him being awesome and productive, and then you'd have a meltdown.
69:57So I just think CD is a more reliable player overall, both incredibly talented.
70:01They should throw the football. Once again, they're a walking top five offense with Dak.
70:06No surprise there. Both guys inside my top 10 for wide receivers right now.
70:10One of them comes with just more risk, that being Pickens.
70:13Final question. Jane Daniels, one of the most popular quarterback picks.
70:17Can he bounce back? Yes, yes. It all comes down to this is running.
70:21And I know we talk about this every year.
70:24Rushing for quarterbacks is such a ridiculous cheat code for fantasy football purposes.
70:28It just is. It feels like it was a pedestrian year for Patrick Mahomes last year in a lot of ways.
70:34And you go back and you look at the number of times he finishes a top eight score.
70:39And you're like, really? Like it just kept happening like eight times out of the 14 games he played.
70:45Because Patrick Mahomes was running for his life last year.
70:48Jaden Daniels could be running for his life. But he'll definitely just be running a lot in general.
70:54Regardless of the motivation behind the runs, as long as your quarterback is running, you will be good.
70:59So Jaden Daniels, I just I feel like a down year for him is like 400 rushing yards probably.
71:05Kind of like where Kyler was for a while in Arizona.
71:08That even if it wasn't clicking as much as a passer, he still had more of a floor than your typical quarterback.
71:15I think Jaden's a more, to me, a more talented passer than Kyler Murray at this juncture of their careers.
71:21So there's way more upside. But he is quarterback three for me right now.
71:25Josh being one. Lamar Jackson being two. Jaden Daniels being three.
71:28And I want to say it's it's one of the two quarterbacks that either previously or will soon to be throw passes.
71:35Will soon be throwing passes to A.J. Brown. It's either Jalen Hurts or Drake May or Drake May and Jalen Hurts four or five.
71:42Malik Wills is going to get so many carries this season.
71:45I just they're going to run the damn wishbone.
71:48Like, yeah. OK, well, that's good news about Daniels.
71:51All right. So let me know, by the way, listeners, I haven't done fantasy stuff that much on this show before.
71:57Other than though I very much so love clearly and spent too much time thinking about my dynasty team.
