Alec Ingold

PositiveUsage50:49

Mina Kimes expects Alec Ingold to see significant volume in the Chargers offense under McDaniel; she emphasizes 'get ready to see so much goddamn Alec Ingold' as part of McDaniel's strategy to add big bodies and leverage the run game.

Insight page

Bo Nix

NegativeProjection26:00

Bo Nix showed improvement in year two and is expected to improve further in year three, though an ankle injury is a concern; he ranks first in screen attempts over the last two seasons, which pairs well with Waddle's skillset; he has underrated arm strength with the longest completed pass in the NFL the last two years at 58 air yards; however, he struggles throwing over the middle of the field (fifth-lowest percentage between the numbers, 31st in CPOE, 30th in first-down rate, 28th in on-target rate when throwing between the numbers), an area where Waddle excels and can help his development; he avoids negative plays well due to sack evasion and low interception rate, though some risk aversion is present.

Insight page

Courtland Sutton

PositiveRole37:17

Courtland Sutton remains a reliable X receiver for the Broncos, consistently beating top corners in the league and providing a strong red-zone option alongside Jalen Waddle.

Insight page

Darren Waller

NegativeRole59:35

Mina Kimes references Joku as a 'diet Andrews' in the Ravens tight end trio, implying Joku is a secondary option compared to the primary tight end role, similar to how Waller was positioned relative to Andrews in Baltimore.

Insight page

Davis Webb

NegativeRole27:27

Davis Webb is now the play caller for the Broncos, though there is uncertainty about how long he will retain the role before John Payton potentially takes over if things go south; the speaker is not particularly knowledgeable about Webb but believes the quality of the roster and offensive line make it difficult to fail.

Insight page

Evan Engram

NegativeBust35:00

Evan Ingram was expected to be the joker/utility player in the Broncos offense but did not produce; the speaker did multiple NFL Live segments trying to promote Ingram's potential, but he failed to deliver, partly due to Bo Nix's reluctance to throw over the middle of the field.

Insight page

Fernando Mendoza

NegativeRole69:21

Mendoza expected to play approximately half the season, likely starting around week 8 after Kirk Cousins gets early opportunities; early schedule is brutal (Patriots, Bills, Rams, Jets in weeks 5-8, followed by Niners, Seahawks, Broncos), limiting early-season fantasy relevance and creating uncertainty about when he'll actually take over the starting role.

Insight page

Gabe Nabers

PositiveProjection52:01

Gabe Nabers is expected to benefit from the Chargers' run-game emphasis and McDaniel's scheme; the stretch runs created by McDaniel's motions and run-game design will open up opportunities for skill players.

Insight page

Isaiah Likely

NegativeRole59:35

In Mina Kimes' comparison of Ravens tight ends, Likely is positioned as playing the primary role in a trio with Kolar and Gadsden, suggesting he retains the lead tight end role despite the presence of other pass-catchers.

Insight page

Jared Wiley

NegativeRole16:00

Tight end on Mina Kimes' dynasty team; holding onto a tiny prayer he could become something; the Chiefs did not add a blocking tight end in the draft despite the emphasis on improving the run game, which is a notable omission.

Insight page

Jaylen Waddle

PositiveProjection25:30

Jalen Waddle joining the Broncos is textbook elite receiver addition; he had 104 catches as a rookie and remained WR1 in EPA per target from 2022 through last season despite playing with Tyreek Hill; when Hill was on field, Waddle still ranked WR5 in yards per route; he excels in screen game and yards after catch, with second-best yards after catch on throws over 10 yards behind only Justin Jefferson; he is the perfect between-the-numbers player combining speed and strength to create yards after catch that makes him quarterback-friendly.

Insight page

Jonah Coleman

NegativeRole33:40

Jonah Coleman was drafted by the Broncos as a short-yardage and early-down back to spell Jakobi Dobbins; the speaker compares his role to the Pierre Thomas role, suggesting around 25% of snaps in a three-back committee with Dobbins and RJ Harvey.

Insight page

Justin Herbert

PositiveProjection46:35

Herbert showed top-10 quarterback performance when throwing under 2.5 seconds (7th in success rate, 10th in EPA), indicating the Chargers' offensive line issues—not Herbert's ability—were the primary problem last year. With new offensive line help and scheme adjustments including changed footwork in OTAs/mini camp, Herbert has significant upside in the Shanahan system, especially given the historical trend that Shanahan-tree play callers with legit quarterbacks throw for ~45 touchdowns per year (Burrow, Matt Ryan, Stafford, Baker Mayfield examples).

Insight page
PositiveRole49:04

McDaniel's offensive scheme is designed to keep Herbert out of obvious drop-back situations and win on early downs through an emphasis on run game and pass protection improvements; the addition of a center and retention of good tackles supports this approach.

Insight page

Keaton Mitchell

PositiveRole52:11

Keaton Mitchell is a priority target for McDaniel in the Chargers backfield; McDaniel hung a 'wanted poster' of Mitchell on the GM's wall with the message 'I need myself some Keaton Mitchell,' signaling his importance to the run-game scheme.

Insight page

Kenneth Walker III

PositiveProjection0:04

Borderline first-round fantasy pick with expected career highs across the board; Chiefs' interior offensive line is strong (Creed Humphrey, Joe Thuney, Josh Simmons ranked 11th in pressure rate allowed), and Kenneth Walker was fifth in yards per carry when not hit behind the line since 2022, compared to Chiefs running backs ranking 46th and 51st in that same metric; Andy Reid has a historic track record with elite running backs (LeSean McCoy averaged 1,800+ scrimmage yards in his final three seasons with Reid), and the Seahawks' offensive line was weaker than the Chiefs' on paper, suggesting Walker's efficiency could improve significantly.

Insight page
PositiveRole1:00

Expected to receive a significant workload increase from his Seattle role; while he was part of a rotation with fresh legs in the second half of last season, the ascent had more to do with defensive adjustments (teams stacking the box early, then Jason Moore Jr. opening things up) than fresh legs alone; the Chiefs' situation is better positioned for a full-time role.

Insight page

Mark Andrews

NegativeRole59:35

Mina Kimes compares the Ravens tight end trio of Kolar, Gadsden, and Joku to a budget version of the Andrews/Likely pairing, with Joku playing a diet Andrews role; this suggests reduced target share and role clarity for Andrews in a crowded Ravens tight end room.

Insight page

Nate Adkins

NegativeRole33:00

Nate Adkins is used by the Broncos in heavier groupings as part of their run game, though the overall rushing attack has been disappointing relative to the quality of their offensive line.

Insight page

Patrick Mahomes

NegativeProjection3:00

Chiefs finished 6-11 but had a Pythagorean win expectation of 9.5 wins based on point differential (per FTN Football Almanac); they were 1-9 in one-score games and had only one miss on opponent field goals, both historically bad outcomes unlikely to repeat; positive regression case suggests Mahomes and the offense should improve significantly from last year's performance.

Insight page
NegativeUsage4:00

May see reduced pass attempts and increased under-center usage with Kenneth Walker's arrival; Mahomes led the NFL in pass attempts and nearly doubled his rushing yards per game last year due to offensive necessity; with a functional run game, the Chiefs may evolve the scheme with Eric Biennemi (who ran outside-zone, under-center concepts in Chicago) to take pressure off Mahomes and allow more play-action and deep shots; training camp clips show increased under-center looks.

Insight page

Rashee Rice

PositiveRole11:00

Yards per target versus man coverage ranks 115th out of 122 wide receivers over the last two seasons; only one contested catch against man coverage in that span; extremely limited against man coverage but fantastic against zone coverage with strong yards-after-catch ability and tackle-breaking potential; one-dimensional player who is not reliable enough as a true number-one receiver despite skill set.

Insight page

RJ Harvey

NegativeRole33:20

RJ Harvey is inconsistent and explosive but faces trust issues from the Broncos coaching staff; next-gen stats show he has the second-highest time spent behind the line of scrimmage, indicating indecisiveness; despite his speed, the team drafted Jonah Coleman and pursued other backs like Kenneth Walker and Breece Hall, suggesting they don't trust Harvey enough to give him the Darren Sproles-type joker role they may have envisioned.

Insight page

Saquon Barkley

NegativeValue60:00

Mina Kimes expresses concern about a receiver (likely Hampton) being drafted at 14th overall versus Saquon Barkley at that price tag, suggesting she views Barkley as better value at that draft position.

Insight page

Travis Kelce

PositiveProjection13:00

Average target share continues to decline year over year; was the only Chiefs receiver who ranked inside the top 60 in yards per route run versus man coverage, making him a 'battleship' at this point—a reliable but limited option; both Kelce and Rasheed Rice are zone-coverage answers, creating some redundancy in the passing attack rather than complementary skill sets.

Insight page

Xavier Worthy

NegativeInjury10:00

Suffered shoulder injury on the second play of the season last year (third play overall); Andy Reid subsequently reworked his role to emphasize screens and crossers, but the team ultimately decided he couldn't survive those play types and instead ran him on vertical routes down the field; did not look like the fastest player in the NFL when reviewed, which makes sense given multiple ankle injuries during the season and the shoulder injury limiting his explosiveness.

Insight page
NegativeProjection15:00

Year three is when he should take the leap, but the pressure is on him to step up for the Chiefs' passing game to improve; if the Chiefs are going to take a big step up in the passing game this year, Xavier Worthy needs to be a first-round pick caliber player; the Chiefs haven't hit a home run on first-round receivers in a while, and Worthy represents their best chance at that breakthrough.

0:26Only NFL podcast. One of the hosts heard me talking about Kenneth Walker and said, that's funny.
0:31I call Mina Lenny Walker. That's Lenny. I'm Mina.
0:33Kenneth Walker time. AFC West here to join me for the first time.
0:37Very exciting. I always love having a first time guest.
0:40Hayden Winks of now the Yahoo Fantasy Football Show.
0:43Just happened. You were traded. I was traded. Yeah.
0:45Exciting times over here. The industry is beyond crazy, but it's always a blessing to talk some football on here and got lots of Kenneth Walker notes.
0:53Yeah. And yeah. It's what a stacked division too.
0:56Yeah. I'm really looking forward to doing this because I've been doing these power rankings pods and I did.
1:02Next one comes out Monday with Bill Simmons and I had the chiefs ranked really low.
1:06And then while doing the prep for this, I started like second guessing that in a pretty big way.
1:12And, and, and, and, and, you know, cause I was thinking like, okay, the chiefs are, you know, in retreat, the chargers are rising.
1:19The Broncos have one of the best rosters in football.
1:22The Raiders are, you know, it's different kind of pro season for them.
1:26But the more I worked on the chiefs, the more I felt like there's potential to look really stupid for thinking that
1:32they're going to have a lost season. So let's start with them.
1:36Cause I actually also haven't talked about them that much this off season.
1:40I don't know if you guys like, I, I, I don't know.
1:43Cause they didn't make top 10 or 10 offices, top 10 offices or defenses pod, which again, the chiefs could totally have a top 10 offense.
1:51Right. And we could look completely dumb. Um, and I feel like the chargers have the shiny new thing with Mike McDaniel and the Broncos have Jalen Waddle.
1:59I'm really excited to get into that. And the Raiders have the new quarterback, but the chiefs, you know, it's like, what,
2:06what has there really been to talk about? And then as I looked at this, Hayden, I was thinking like, actually, there's a lot to talk about.
2:13And I'm kind of intrigued by this team. Yeah.
2:16I see it the same way. There's, there's still a lot of like moving pieces here.
2:21Like their entire defensive secondary is pretty much all new.
2:24They added two, uh, picks in the first and second round to help out in the defensive line.
2:29And then whatever we're calling the Rasheed rice off season, the homes coming, coming off torn ACL, uh, Xavier worthy is not rehabbing a shoulder injury.
2:37Um, and then the enemy is back. And then plus their two tackles are pretty inexperienced.
2:41So like this team is, I think pretty difficult to get a good read.
2:46I, I ended up calling them like the most fragile of like the top three in this division.
2:51I can see how this thing goes, right? But I do think there's more question marks with them than the other two.
2:57They're also like a classic positive regression case because of how badly they did, how historically badly they were in close games last year.
3:04One in nine in one score games. Um, I was just looking at FTN football almanac, which I encourage everyone to check
3:11out as always for some of those stats. And another thing that I, I, I didn't, I think I'd forgotten this perhaps,
3:17uh, only one miss on opponent field goals last year, which again is another thing that's not likely to happen again in terms of regression.
3:25In fact, they do, um, FTN always publishes Pythagorean wins, which is basically what the team's record should have been based on point differential.
3:32And the chiefs finished six and 11, but they actually should have been a nine and a half win team according to FTN.
3:39So like, do you hear that and think, okay, maybe Patrick Mahomes should have been nine, 9.5 wins.
3:44We're all nationally way too low on this team.
3:47Yeah. And then also like the last three games, I mean, they were completely unwatchable after Mahomes wasn't out there.
3:52So I think, I think they are a playoff team.
3:55I'm not sure if they should be the outright favorite for, uh, the AFC West.
4:00Um, and yeah, in my intro, I didn't even mention Kenneth Walker, which I do think like has like, yeah, let's get into that.
4:07Ripple effects. Uh, just because I'm going to guess they're not going to have Mahomes like lead the NFL and pass attempts
4:13as they have been, uh, for, for a lot of seasons.
4:17And like rushing borderline. Running. I mean, he like doubled up, I think his yards per game, uh, last year cause he had to.
4:24Um, so I wonder if they're going to go under center.
4:27It's like something that they have like toyed with at time.
4:30I think they have like the interior offensive line to do it.
4:34Um, and maybe this is their way to actually hit on some of these deep passes.
4:38The last couple of years, my homes have been like really like straight up bad throwing the ball down the field.
4:45Maybe they can start bringing safeties into the box because they have Kenneth Walker and then maybe Rasheed Rice and Xavier worthy
4:51can kind of figure this thing out down the field.
4:54But I do wonder if like, we're just going to see Patrick Mahomes under center a little bit more.
5:00I've noticed that in the training camp clips, it's a lot of like turning his back and it's obviously way too early.
5:06You don't know what drills are doing, but like that was like one thing I've been kind of looking at.
5:12Let's talk about that run game because that's the only real change.
5:16That's like, you know, they ran a back or receiver much to everyone's surprise.
5:20Although Stefan Diggs is still out there. We'll see.
5:22Uh, and also tight end, which I actually kind of found to be the more egregious thing when I started looking at
5:29the step chart, but put a pin in that.
5:31The big change was bringing in Kenneth Walker III from Seattle, the Super Bowl MVP.
5:36Um, and, and, and you know what hated that's been, what's often been cited is that they needed to make the run game more explosive.
5:43It's been the least explosive run game in football, 10 yard plus ones.
5:47And they, so they went out and got one of the most explosive backs in the NFL.
5:52I think that's true, but I also think people are sleeping on how bad this run game was and how kind of
5:59artificially inflated it's been by a few things. Um, because so they finished seventh in rushing success rate last year.
6:04Sounds great. You're like, okay, so they weren't explosive.
6:07They're efficient, but when you take out quarterback runs and then short yardage runs, I just literally took out only second and
6:14short, third and short, fourth and short. They dropped to 29th.
6:17And I think like my homes and the fact that they face the most light boxes in football has almost covered up
6:23for how bad this run game has been over the last two years.
6:27Yeah. I mean the success rate threshold, you have to pick up a fourth and fifth yard on first and 10 and
6:34like they cannot get a fourth and fifth yard for their life.
6:37So it's, it's pretty crazy. I had a very similar stat on, uh, for Kenneth Walker when he was not hit behind
6:44the line of scrimmage, uh, since 2022, he's fifth in yards per carry.
6:47And that's one thing I want to mention with Kenneth Walker, those Seahawks offensive lines were not nearly as good as what
6:54should be on paper, at least in the interior plus Josh Simmons with the chiefs.
6:58Like some of these like Kenneth Walker stats could like all of a sudden look a little bit better because I do
7:05think the blocking will just be a little bit better on his end.
7:09And in that same stat yards, uh, per carry when not hit behind the line of scrimmage, the chiefs running backs were
7:1546 and 51st out of 51 running backs. So you're just getting absolutely nothing, um, from them.
7:20And there's this huge history with Andy Reed and running backs.
7:23I was going back to like Jamal Charles, Brian Westbrook to Staley.
7:27And then LaShawn McCoy, the LaShawn McCoy seasons with Andy Reed, like 1800, uh, plus scrimmage yards.
7:32That was his 17 game pace in his final three seasons with, with Andy Reed.
7:36We haven't talked about Andy Reed and running backs in so long.
7:40Cause the chiefs have not had one, but like five years ago, it was like the talk of the town is like this huge history with Andy Reed.
7:48Hmm. I think Kenneth Walker is like a borderline first round pick and fantasy.
7:52And I do think that it's gonna be a huge, huge workload and I'm expecting the career highs across the board for him.
7:59To be fair to that. That is a little bit of an unknown here because Kenneth Walker has not had a huge workload in last year.
8:07Famously was part of rotation until the end. Fresh legs crushed it in down the stretch and in the post season.
8:13I actually think his ascent in the second half of the year had less to do with.
8:18Just having fresh legs and more just the way teams were playing the Seahawks personally and the way they were like stacking
8:24the box in the first half of the season.
8:27And then we're like, Oh, oops, Jason exists and just stopped.
8:30And then there was more room for Walker. But yeah, I think it's not unreasonable to surmise that this is a better situation for him.
8:38You see that at the interior, the offensive line is really strong quietly, by the way, like soon at Tia moving inside and like being really good.
8:46No one really talks about what a great move that was and how incredibly it worked out for the Chiefs.
8:51Josh Simmons, when he played, was very good. 11th, according to FDNs and pressure rate allowed and ranks really high in ESPN's past block win as well.
8:59Right tackle is kind of the question. Jalen Moore, it's unclear what they're going to do.
9:04But still, four out of five is pretty damn good.
9:07And I think the other unknown is what you alluded to, which is, is the run game going to evolve at all
9:14with Eric Biennemi coming back from Chicago? Which has a diametrically, had a diametrically opposite run game, right?
9:19Under center, outside zone. Very different from the Chiefs RPO gun centric run game.
9:23Is he going to bring any of that with him?
9:26I think that's kind of one of the more interesting off seasons because like everything else from the Chiefs offense, as you
9:32said, can they do play more play action? Can they take shots?
9:36Can Patrick Mahomes have time? It all flows to me over whether or not this run game can improve on basement over what we've seen?
9:43Built like that. Like it's one of the freakiest builds ever.
9:47Like he looked at like Washington. Yeah, I know.
9:49He, and he's like lost. I don't know. I, I, I.
9:52He'll figure it out. Yeah. I, I, I am optimistic.
9:55I also think the fact that the Chiefs, the questions about Josh Simmons really aren't off on the field, like to based
10:02on what we saw and the fact that the Chiefs did are throwing everything behind him suggests to me that they're pretty
10:08confident and who would ever question the Chiefs jumped into character.
10:12The receiving group though. Let, I mean, let's get into it.
10:15You know, so the investment is the run game.
10:18I think we both agree it can be better and should be better.
10:21And hopefully there'll be some evolution scheme. They ran it back.
10:25Right. And, um, I, there's a case to be made that this again, digs is still out there possibly, but like that,
10:31this isn't that crazy because rice is only a couple of years removed from being extremely productive.
10:36And when he played last year, he was still fairly productive.
10:39We can get into his limitations as a player.
10:42I'd like to talk about that, but, uh, worthy got banged up on the very first like play of the season and seemingly never bounced back.
10:50By the way, I have it on my dynasty team.
10:53It's a great experience. Uh, and then other than that, uh, you know, there's Taequann Thorne, they decided to retain Jalen Royals,
10:59Cyrus Allen, no, no, you know, no. Yeah. Um, so do you think this was like a objectively awful mistake to just run it back?
11:06Or do you think there's possibility this could be better than what we saw last year?
11:11I mean, they got man sort of lane who I thought was a top 10 pick.
11:16And then, you know, Peter woods. Yeah. I mean, I wasn't the biggest fan of Peter woods who, um, they got later on, uh, in round one.
11:24And then I thought our Mason Thomas, like they needed some pass rush juice.
11:28Like they needed a defensive tackle, a corner and an edge rusher.
11:31That's what they spent their off season doing. They did that.
11:35They need a running back. They did that. You can't figure out everything.
11:39Xavier worthy and Rashid rice have a lot of skill, but they're so flawed.
11:43And like, they just don't beat man coverage all that well.
11:46Like for she rice yards per target versus man coverage over the last two seasons, he's 115th out of 122 wide receivers.
11:52Like that's just like straight up, not good enough.
11:55He only has one contested catch against man coverage over the last two seasons.
11:59He's fantastic against zone coverage. He can really run with the ball in his hands.
12:04He's got more sizing and bounce off some tackles versus a lot of the guys you kind of think in that role.
12:10Uh, but just like, he's not that reliable against man coverage.
12:13Uh, and he's pretty one dimensional. And then with Xavier worthy, like you said, the first snap of the season last year was a run play.
12:21The second play of the game was a handoff to Xavier worthy.
12:24The third play is when he detonated his shoulder.
12:27And then Andy Reed said afterwards, they just had to like rework everything about Xavier where they want him to do a bunch of screens.
12:34They want him to run a bunch of crossers.
12:37And instead they just didn't think that he'd be able to survive on those type of plays.
12:42So they pretty much just like random on a vertical line down the football field.
12:47And when I went back and watched him, he did not look like the fastest player in the NFL.
12:52And I think that makes sense. He had a bummed ankle multiple times in the season.
12:57And obviously you do need your shoulder when you're running.
13:00Uh, uh, and he just did not look like that dynamic of a player.
13:04It's year three. Like we should expect him to kind of take the leap, but they need him because the Travis Kelsey
13:10stuff's not going to be nearly as good. Yeah.
13:13Kelsey's average at the target keeps going down, down, down.
13:16He still, by the way, was the only, uh, chiefs receiver who ranked inside the top 60 in yards per route run
13:23versus man coverage to your point about their inability to beat that.
13:26Um, and that's, you know, like battleship Travis Kelsey at this point.
13:30So like, and him and rice are like a little, I wouldn't say duplicative because rice has so much juice after the
13:36catch is different kind of player, but they're both answers against zone.
13:40That's what she writes is. And he's a very good answer versus zone.
13:43Um, you know, he's somewhat limited, I think as a quote, number one, because he's not going to be man coverage.
13:50He's not going to win with size, not going to win at the line of scrimmage.
13:54But if you can find ways to get him the ball in his hands, there's an explosive play potential.
14:00Problem is like, again, you said it, what, what do you do when they play man?
14:05And it's actually kind of an issue because to rice and or the, maybe are both in the slot best.
14:11I don't know. Like, so I think about where these rookie year when it seemed like down the stretch of that season,
14:17they kind of started finding ways to use him against man, like on like little quick outs and, you know, pick plays and things like that.
14:25And it feels like that was an answer for them.
14:28It wasn't explosive, but it was at least an answer.
14:31If they can get back to that, I think it would be helpful.
14:34Um, I think his health will help him win downfield, but also my homes and him have to like figure out where
14:41these absorb most of the blame for the lack of a deep passing game and the misses.
14:46And then obviously we've seen him like run out of bounds times and, and, and, but my homes misses him a lot too.
14:53It's weird. Right. It's like, it just never, I don't know.
14:56You just don't connect for whatever. I feel like every off season preview, I'm like the deep steps are going to regress
15:02and they'll be back to third in scoring. And then it's like, no, just missed him again.
15:07You know? So like, and you never know with the ACL stuff.
15:11And obviously some of the stuff is out of structure when you're throwing the ball down the football fields, which like go
15:17back to the Tyree kill the days. I would be surprised if we ever get that stuff all the way back.
15:24I do think like the most, I think maybe the most pressure does seem to be like on Xavier worthy to step up.
15:30Like to me, I have a good feel for what like Rashid rice is.
15:35Travis Kelsey is what he is at this point.
15:37Like if they're going to actually take like a big step up this year in the past game, like, I think like
15:44it's time for Xavier worthy to be a first round pick.
15:47Like you look at like the last couple of first rounders that the chiefs have had, it's just like, has not been up to like super bowl standard.
15:55Like they're fine players, but they have not like hit a home run in the first round in a while, depending on
16:02how we're going to view Josh Simmons here. I'm offended that they didn't add a blocking tight end.
16:07I know. Like, I'm just playing at the Dutch.
16:10I don't know. In my, especially like with the run on them in the draft, I was thinking surely they added one
16:16of the like, you know, 20 blocking tight ends that all went in the middle of the draft.
16:21And like, I'm looking at it and it's the same guy.
16:25I actually, I have Jared Wiley also on my, it's a very deep time.
16:29And so I'm still holding on to a tiny prayer that he could become something.
16:33But yeah, it's like you, I, because they just have so little, all the best offenses in the NFL have so much personnel flexibility right now.
16:41And the chiefs just don't, and they didn't even try.
16:44And so I, I think the offensive line is good enough that you can build a much better run game.
16:50And obviously you have Patrick Mahomes, which will always, you're never going to, you're always going to get a decent amount of
16:56light boxes and they can, all the things we've said can improve from there.
17:00But like, I don't understand how you look around the league and see how teams are getting these mismatches and just have zero interest in partaking.
17:08I mean, unless you were like the bangles and the Cowboys where you have two elite receivers fine, but they obviously don't.
17:14So why would you not try to do that?
17:17I don't, I don't understand. I think that's just like, there were more holes on the chiefs roster than we kind of
17:24gave credit for, even like when they were like in it, like to win super bowls, like you're still looking around and
17:30be like, there are some very visible holes. Like, thank goodness they have spags to hide a lot of them on defense
17:36and obviously Mahomes on offense, but like they need to hit on some more draft picks.
17:41Like that's just kind of where they're at. All right.
17:44Well, that's a good segue to the defense. Cause that is, as you said earlier, that was the focus in the draft.
17:51It's gotten much younger. I mean, it's, it's really something to like, look at all of the additions you alluded to to
17:57help Karloftis and Chris Jones, who were just the entire pass rush outside of Chris Jones, who was first in pass rush
18:04win, by the way, last year, still crazy. No other Kansas city defensive tackle ranked in the top 50.
18:09Karloftis was 25th. No other Kansas city edge ranked in the top 50, which is a pretty good encapsulation of what it looked like.
18:16So they added our Mason Thomas speedy juice guy, a little undersized.
18:20Uh, and then Peter woods also a juice guy.
18:22Clearly they, the emphasis was juice. I think it was kind of like, they just want both somewhat flawed prospects, but both
18:29have the potential to add like an injection of explosiveness at the line of scrimmage.
18:33And then they're hoping to get something out of FAU who people forgot a Felix and Dike Zoma was their first round prick.
18:40Uh, they also added Kairos Tonga, which I kind of, yes, great addition there from new England.
18:45The nose tackle very good against the run linebacker group.
18:48You lose Chanel. Otherwise you kind of, which actually not a nothing because they do use a lot of base defense and
18:55they're, they're losing some of their linebackers. And then the corner, the secondary, as you said, a lot of new faces, Watson
19:01and McDuffie out, Noel Williams, full-time starter, man's probably man, sir.
19:04Delane first round pick perfect fit in my mind.
19:07I guess Kahu maybe at nickel, just not Chimari Connor, please.
19:10Uh, and then they brought back old friend, Lajaria Snead.
19:13Oh, they also, uh, added Aloha Gilman to play safety competence and drafted Jaden Kennedy.
19:18So all the additions I mentioned, all of the change, what are you the most excited about?
19:23Like everything I said, if you're Steve Spagnuolo, what is getting you pumped about this roster?
19:27I think the depth on the, the entire defensive line looks better.
19:31Like even like the, the depth at corner does look pretty passable.
19:34I think the thing that doesn't make me the most excited, but makes me like just the most concerned or like, is
19:41just how good is Noel Williams in man sort of lane?
19:44Like, I mean, the bar is extremely high for what they're replacing.
19:48And then Aloha Gilman too, with Brian cook, I thought Brian cook had a lot of, uh, quality snaps for him.
19:54You just kind of trust Spags to figure out the secondary.
19:57And I thought that Noel Williams, like had some like really high end moments, like in man coverage.
20:02And then obviously man sort of lane, like nobody completed a pass against him in the sec.
20:07So I feel probably pretty fine about it. Lajaria Snead as a backup, another off field guy, um, there, um, to me,
20:14just like, all right, Peter Woods are Mason Thomas.
20:16Could one of them be a legit rotational number?
20:19Like I'm not expecting either one of them to be full-time players.
20:23Maybe Omar Norman lots, another one of these like rotational guys.
20:26Yeah. Coming off of, uh, I think it was an ACL injury in week five.
20:30So like they have depth. Those are a lot of names we listed.
20:34Like a couple of them need to be like really good.
20:37And I think that the odds are pretty, pretty favorable.
20:40I, I probably wouldn't rank them as a top 10 defense, but they would not be far off of that.
20:46And I've obviously have all the faith in the world for Spags to kind of figure it out.
20:52Well, speaking of Spags, I think another thing that happened last year, we talked about this a decent amount at the end
20:58of the season was his blitzes just stopped working, which was kind of wild to see.
21:03Um, and I, I, so last year they ranked 25th in sac rate when they blitzed this team, obviously that blitzes a
21:09lot with Spags, which was a 5.7% sac rate.
21:12I mean, the previous three years, they were of around 10% in all of those years.
21:17And I don't know if it's, I, I have to think about it.
21:20Cause I, I should probably go back and look at some of the tendencies and whether they were too predictable, but I
21:27do remember last season vividly just seeing them get picked up and cornerbacks get stonewalled.
21:31Um, so, you know, I think they're hoping perhaps that with some of those additions, they can have more of a four
21:38man rush to make the sacks feel more unpredictable because I think defense is new outside of Chris Jones.
21:43They're really not. And, and Carl just was injured to some of the season.
21:47They're not getting pressure. So they're going to send someone and we have answers for that.
21:52And you just can't live that way the way they did.
21:55Yeah. And that's why I called the chiefs. The most fragile is like, it's also Chris Jones has been like, like you said, like dominant still.
22:03I mean, how much longer can we realistically talk about him?
22:06And he is somebody that like, he deserves to do this.
22:10He does get hot and cold and he kind of saves it for when the games matter the most.
22:15Like he absolutely should be doing that. But at the same time, like he is an older guy.
22:20He's played a million snaps, including the post season.
22:23Like how long is he going to be one of the top three, four defensive tackles in the NFL?
22:29Um, I, I do like the Tonga stuff because we mentioned all the juice Tonga is just like, he totally kicks ass out there.
22:36Like he opened up so much for the Patriots, other defensive tackles, like the fact that you can throw them out there
22:42and let the other guys go crazy. I do think that is a nice body to add here.
22:48So I think there'll be fine. I think really they're good enough to make the playoffs with this defense.
22:53Absolutely. This defense could actually even be like, I'd say top eight unit.
22:57If a lot of things kind of go well, uh, really it's just like, to me, the offense has, they can't be like 10th.
23:04Like this, this offense has to go back to like top five.
23:08I'm not sure if I, if I see it quite yet.
23:11You don't think like top 10 offense, top 12 defense.
23:14Yeah. Yeah. I think, I think the other thing I'll say about this defense is they could be better at the end of the year than the beginning.
23:22Cause of all the change that we talked about and see Spagnuolo and game plan specific.
23:27I really like Mansour Delane just to talk about, I mean, I thought, um, it's so, I, I, I think I was
23:33pushing him as a cheese pick and there were cheese fans that were like, Steve Spagnuolo doesn't need a first rounder.
23:39He can take a six because he's done it so many times.
23:43I just do not subscribe to that kind of thinking.
23:46I, and I think, um, obviously he's had a lot of success elevating undrafted and lower drafted corners, but having a guy
23:52like Delane who I view is, I, I thought was one of the more pro ready prospects in the entire draft, um, just makes life so much easier.
24:01So Spagnuolo in terms of everything else he does.
24:03Uh, I think Delane allows them to, um, I think he's, he, they play both man and zone.
24:09I think he's a very good tackler as well.
24:11I think he's very, just complete. So I, I, I feel like, you know, I, I never, I, I've been burned on
24:18pro ready corners before, but I just feel pretty confident that he can step in.
24:22He's also battle tested. Like that was the thing I liked about the prospect.
24:26He went up against like really good receivers, really talented offenses.
24:30So, um, yeah, I'm, I'm very high on him.
24:32Yeah. 11 pass deflections, zero penalties, zero touchdowns. I mean, it was like, it was like, it was a, it was a clinic.
24:39My, my comp form was, was Derek Stingley. Like this was as, this was like as good as it gets.
24:45All right, let's do the Broncos next. Um, who I keep saying are the favorite.
24:49And then like Vegas, I don't, is like a lot of like FPI and Vegas are kind of lower on that.
24:55I was talking to Bill about this, uh, which is confusing to me because the roster stacked.
25:00There's a couple questions I have both sides of the ball, but it's, they're definitely the most talented roster in the entire division.
25:07Uh, I will say to, you know, I mentioned the chiefs, but that agree with wins.
25:12They were a little lucky 14, three should have been 11 and six, still very good team.
25:17It's very, if you're with that many wins, you're always going to be lower.
25:21Obviously you have to win some close games. Uh, but they finished, uh, 10th and weighted DV away on offense.
25:27And then they added Jalen model. Um, let's start there.
25:30Like how much did you love the waddle edition?
25:33How much do you love him with bone Nix with these receivers?
25:36Do you think it has the potential to take what was like a borderline top 10 offense and vault it into the top 10?
25:43I would put the Broncos as I think my super bowl pick.
25:47I thought their roster is really good. And then in my notes, it's kind of reminded me like when the Eagles added
25:53AJ Brown, like everything was already in place. And just like, all right, if this hits, like we can actually go on a real run here.
26:01And obviously they're in the AFC championship. So, uh, it's not that strong of a take, but with waddle, I mean, it's, it's as textbook as it gets.
26:09Uh, he had 104 catches as a rookie. Like I kind of forgot about how many receptions that was.
26:15And then Tyreek came in and even then he was still wide receiver one and EPA per target from 2022 all the way up until last season.
26:23He's, uh, the wider receiver five and yards per route.
26:26When two was on the field, there's a lot of games where it's like Skylar Thompson types out there.
26:31So once you remove them, he like looks like as, as a borderline top 10 guy.
26:36And then in the offense, a scheme, Bo Nix is first in screen attempts, uh, the last two seasons.
26:42And it's like really not even close to the point that Marvin Mims and Troy Franklin are each averaging a screen per game.
26:48I mean, that's, that's wild stuff. Uh, and obviously Jalen waddle in that department's like as, as good as it gets.
26:54So I think he's going to be spoon, uh, spoon fed a bunch of receptions.
26:59And I do think that he can do some of the downfield stuff, obviously with his speed that Bo Nix, uh, outside the pocket can create.
27:07So, and I'm still hope, hopeful that Bo Nix could take another leave.
27:10I thought the second year was better than the first and I think the third year will probably be better than the
27:17second, except that fricking ankle injury, which who knows?
27:20Yeah. Davis Webb, who's now the play caller, which is one of the unknowns here and how long is before John Payton, uh, takes it away.
27:27If, if anything goes south, but I don't think it will.
27:30I'm not that I know anything about Davis Webb.
27:33I just think this is a, he is such a good group of players to work with.
27:38And also when you have an offensive line, this good, your foundation is so strong.
27:42It's pretty hard to screw it up. Um, but I, he made a comment that kind of, he, he talked about how
27:49he compared waddle joining Denver to potentially Stefan digs and what he did for Josh Allen in Buffalo.
27:54Yeah. And he did it not like a, he wasn't comparing Bo Nix to Josh Allen.
27:59So don't freak out. His point was like a true number one, a truly talented receiver can help develop a quarterback.
28:05And I think that's so important for Bo Nix and his development because waddle hypothetically allows Bo Nix to get much better
28:12at the things he's been bad at. And whether he will, I do not know.
28:16I cannot tell you, right? Like I, I didn't see it coming with Josh Allen, right?
28:21Like it's just not that again, they're very different players.
28:24But my point is like, whether it'll happen, I don't know, but he's been given now everything he needs.
28:29Um, and specifically, I mean, there's a few areas of his game where waddle, I think fills in the gaps.
28:35You talked about the yards after the cash, you know, but I, but the thing, one thing that I kind of like,
28:42I feel like doesn't get talked about as much with Nix as it does with Hertz and Penix.
28:47He really doesn't throw over the middle of the field, uh, last year, fifth lowest percentage between the numbers.
28:53And then when he did, so just on a rate basis, he was 31st in CPOE 30th and first down rate 28th and on target rate.
29:00So not great. And he was very good by the way, on like go balls to court, let's not like back shoulder or face whatever.
29:08Jalen waddle since 2021 between the numbers has been a monster.
29:11Yeah. Now you can say again, that's Michael Gaines knows offense.
29:14Sure. And to a skillset, absolutely part of it.
29:17But I really maintain if you just watch Jalen waddle, he is like the perfect between the numbers player because he is that combination of fast and strong.
29:25He's not the biggest guy, but he's really strong and tough and then gets you yards after the catch that makes him
29:31such a quarterback friendly target against those looks. So, Hey, I just feel like when we talk about the next, can he take that third year leap?
29:39Waddle to me was like, you know, not the perfect player, but like about as good as he gets towards addressing some of the things he struggled at.
29:48Yeah. I had the same exact nose. There was like something like built in like dig routes for, for bonus, but it's like not like back side digs.
29:56It's kind of just like throw this fricking dig routes, like the first read and on those, they would complete some of
30:02them, but the ball would kind of spray, which I always thought was weird with bonus because I view him as like
30:09an accurate quarterback when he's throwing the ball down the field and like all the layups and stuff he hits like that window.
30:16He is just like not felt comfortable with. And that was the case a little bit at Oregon as a definitely in the first couple of seasons.
30:24I hope that gets ironed out. Like the other thing bonus has is not just Sean Payton.
30:29Who's like just as good as Mike McDaniel, if not better as a play caller, the offensive line is like all back.
30:35They had a couple injuries last year and like now the backups have experience and they got, I mean, pro bowlers all across the offensive line.
30:43They're all returning. It's like what Sean Payton does is like coach him up, up front.
30:48So I feel really good about the foundation. And I do think for the warts that Bo Nix has, he is like a very talented guy.
30:55Like he, he evades a lot of sacks. Like he's got that sneaky athletes.
30:59Yeah. And it's not just because of the offensive line.
31:02A lot of it is the offensive line. Like I'm sure he's lowest sack rate.
31:07I don't, I don't have it, but he is actually.
31:10He can run a little bit. I think he avoids negative place, which is really, really important.
31:15Sean Payton's offense. And like, that's not just sacks.
31:17Now, again, part of avoiding negative plays in terms of interceptions is not throwing over the middle of the fields.
31:23Why? Like Jalen hurts, you know, uh, there's a risk aversion there.
31:27Uh, and for sure. But I do think he's one of his talents and it is very important sack evasion, um, and not making like mistakes.
31:34And that's definitely something that's impressive with him. Yes.
31:37And obviously the same thing with hurts, like you said, is when the defense is that good, I'm sure the coaches are
31:43like, just like, don't mess this up. So there's that little element to him.
31:48And maybe they take some more chances because they have waddle throwing or going over the middle versus like Troy Franklin and
31:54these guys, but by the, the Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims, like yards per target numbers are horrific.
31:59So like, we just take some of those targets and go to Jalen wall.
32:03Like we're talking about like a huge upgrade there.
32:06The other thing about bone next, I think his arm strength, I think is also pretty underrated.
32:11I think like the last two years, I think he has the longest completed pass in the NFL.
32:16There's a couple of these like huge shots. It's like 58, uh, air yards.
32:20If you're like looking like in a spreadsheet filter, but also like it's on the other side of the football field and stuff.
32:27So like he does have like a really wicked arm.
32:30It's just like the, you know, the, the development over the middle and stuff like that's where we have to take the next step here.
32:37If we're going to get a top five offense, which I think is possible.
32:42I, I do think this is like one of the biggest moves of the off season from a fantasy perspective.
32:47I would not know what to do with this backfield.
32:50Um, Broncos run game has been, I think consistently disappointing relative to the offensive line.
32:55Like it's not that bad when you look at the numbers, although they were 19th and rushing DBA, but then when you
33:01consider the fact that they have one of the better run blocking offensive lines in football, and there's some also like things they can do.
33:09I really liked it when they use Nate Adkins, um, as part of their heavier groupings.
33:13It is kind of crazy that they're not better.
33:16They were running the ball really well with Jakey Dobbins.
33:19He got hurt. RJ Harvey was inconsistent, but explosive.
33:22Uh, Dobbins returned. And then they also drafted Jonah Coleman to spell him as more of, I imagine like a short yardage, uh, early down back.
33:29Don't know what to make of this group. Yeah.
33:32For fantasy. I was like, I avoid all of them.
33:35This is just Sean Payton's history, like where he uses all three of them.
33:39Like, I think that like Jonah Coleman can be like the Pierre Thomas rule.
33:43And like, that's like 25% of the snaps. I, I, I think it'll be like Dobbins on early downs.
33:49RJ Harvey as like the Darren Sproles. I think the problem with Harvey is he's just, like you said, way too inconsistent.
33:55Uh, next gen stats had him the second highest time, uh, spent behind the line of scrimmage.
34:00There there's just no reason when you have that offensive line, like that is just indecisiveness.
34:05That's what I saw on tape. Like you said, he is really fast, but, um, I just don't think that they trust
34:11him to the point that they gave Dobbins. I think it was like around $10 million this year.
34:17They drafted Jonah Coleman. They were in the market for the Kenneth Walker types, breeze hall, uh, Travis H and all those guys.
34:23Um, and they ended up just going with Jonah Coleman.
34:26And so I think it's gonna be even split, but RJ Harvey's gotta get better.
34:31I think they're, they're probably just want JK Dobbins to run between the tackles.
34:35And then the funness will come from, from waddle instead of, I'm sure they were hoping that was gonna be RJ Harvey in the joker role.
34:43It just didn't work out. I know there was, I remember like last off season.
34:47And everyone was kept trying to just make people the joker.
34:50Like, yeah, it's like the butterfly meme. Is this the joker?
34:54Is Evan Ingram the joker? Evan Ingram obviously didn't do anything in Denver.
34:57There was so much, I feel like I did like 10 NFL live segments on Evan.
35:02I'm trying to the progress. Cause I do think part of that though, I will say some, a lot of it's in
35:09Grimm, but then some of that is the middle of the field stuff.
35:12Candidly. And the, that just not being a big part of.
35:16Oh, Nick's is bag. Um, but yeah, like I, I, I just think waddle is, it's crazy to going back and looking
35:22at, I was looking at all those numbers, like narrowing the frame, expanding it just because, um, so like I use yards per route run a lot.
35:30And for those who don't, most of us do when we talk about receivers and for those who have don't know what
35:37it means, it's a way of capturing, not just how productive a receiver is on a rate basis, but how much they're used.
35:43Right. So like, I guess that is productivity, but it's not just efficiency.
35:47It's also productivity, um, yards per route run, not just yards per catch.
35:51Right. Like a receiver who runs 10 routes is, you know, or who gets targeted 10 times is not going to be rank high.
35:58The fact that waddle ranks so high in yards per route run over the last few years, despite playing with Tyreek Hill is crazy.
36:05Now I will say that offense basically ran through those two players and no one else.
36:10So that also was a factor there. But, uh, I mean, I was looking at yards after the catch because one of
36:16the things about the Broncos offense that I think is notable, they were six in yards after the catch, which is not
36:23surprising because of how many screens they ran. But if you limited it to throws over 10 yards, they dropped to 25th.
36:29So it was basically all screens. Waddle Jalen Waddle on throws over 10 yards over the lat over the course of his
36:36career is second only behind Justin Jefferson in yards after the catch.
36:39So it's, it's not just, Hey, let's just throw the ball in the flat.
36:43It's on like legitimate routes. He will get you.
36:46He will turn a 10 yard throw into a 20 yard one consistently.
36:50And that to me is a skill set that's been missing in this offense.
36:54Yeah. I mean, if they connect on crossers, like everything about this offense is going to be legit.
36:59I mean, they're really good in the screen game, especially when you get Waddle involved.
37:04I think that the offensive line will make them find enough rushing offense.
37:08They have the scripted plays down the football field, like all those big bootleg stuff.
37:12We haven't even mentioned Courtland Sutton and like Courtland Sutton was still dunking on everybody as like a very like reliable X
37:18receiver, like against some of the best corners in the league, just dunking on them.
37:23Like that's a great option to have in the red area.
37:26So yeah, if, if they can hit these crossing routes and you get Waddle speed after the catch, like it's kind of like no notes on the offense.
37:34So it's obviously, that's a big if then statement there, but like 30 year player with Sean Payton with Jalen Waddle skillset.
37:41Like it's not that crazy of a, uh, if then statement to me, the defense fourth and DVOA.
37:46I think I had them fifth or something on my top 10 defenses pod.
37:50Um, mostly returns everyone, uh, outside of, uh, Franklin Myers, who is a good player.
37:55So that's not nothing. Um, but for the most part, they're running it back.
37:59However, Jonathan Cooper, who was part of that very good four man rush opposite.
38:03I think probably second to pressures behind Zach Allen and obviously Benito unknown status.
38:07Uh, I've talked about this a lot. I feel like it's kind of like flying under the radar a little bit when
38:14people are like the Broncos defense is good. Like the pass rush is like, I'm like their second best edge is potentially facing a suspension.
38:21Um, so I do think it is worth, I do think this will be good.
38:25Even if he's to miss any amount of time.
38:28Uh, but as he should, frankly, if you go look it up, but I, I think it's worth talking about the edge
38:34depth because it's a lot of unknowns, dude. Like you got Benito and then after Cooper, there's a lot of players.
38:41There's, these are defensive tackles. Oh, look at that.
38:43Just Q Robinson, who played a little bit, um, but was kind of part of a rotation at Alabama and played behind some studs.
38:50So it hasn't, you know, it was kind of limited exposure there.
38:54Um, let's see. I'm like, I have to Jonah Ellis Ellis.
38:57Jonah Ellis. He was kind of like an off ball linebacker hybrid.
39:01And then guys I've truly never heard of like Dondre Tillman is second behind like Nick Benito.
39:06Like, I don't, I don't know who that is.
39:08So I guess, yeah. Like, do you, does that concern you or I mean, cause this is demons that blitzed a lot,
39:15but was it's, it's an interesting contrast with Kansas city, which I talked about earlier because incredibly effective blitzing.
39:20And then when you take out blitzes also incredibly effective, which I think is part of what made the blitzes so effective
39:27is that the four man rush was devastating. But what if the four man rush isn't devastating?
39:32Can you play as much man coverage as they did last year?
39:35Are you like, obviously the secondary is awesome. So I think that helps a lot, but do you have any concerns?
39:42Yeah. I think the depth upfront is definitely taking a big hit.
39:45And like, that was with Nick Benito being one of the best edges in the league.
39:50And like, you just never know if like you can keep that up as well.
39:54Like I'm assuming that's going to kind of work out, but you just never know.
39:59Uh, they lead the NFL man coverage. Like, I think it was like 55%, like most of the leagues, like at 30%,
40:05like they were like one of the outlier defenses.
40:08And obviously you can win with four. Uh, and you got Sertan, like things could, uh, it gets really easy to play man coverage at that rate.
40:16What I thought was interesting about the Broncos was when they weren't in man coverage.
40:20So keep in mind, they don't run that much zone compared to the rest of the league.
40:25They do have the best success rate, sack rate and EPA per play when they're in zone coverage.
40:31Like their side hustle, they're like the best in the NFL at, um, Sertan wasn't healthy the whole season last year.
40:37So like maybe, you know, that goes up and like, you can, if we are losing Cooper for a little bit of
40:43the season, then, uh, uh, maybe that's more kind of washes itself out.
40:47Their secondary is really good. They still got like a first round corner on the bench.
40:52Their safety is returning linebackers. It's like literally just the edge depth.
40:55It's crazy that they drafted Jada Barron in the first round and Shaquan McMillan said, psych I'm a top 10 nickel.
41:01He was actually, I looked at his fourth and success rate in coverage amongst corners last year, obviously he gets to play
41:08in a very good group, but like, it's not easy to play with Pat Sertan, right?
41:13Like that's in some way, like that's the funny thing about playing with an elite corner is, you know, you're going to get targeted a lot.
41:20And Riley Moss obviously bore the brunt of that.
41:23But, uh, McMillan was fabulous. Um, and he was fun too.
41:26Cause I remember when he first cracked the rotation, it was like, wow, this is a really fun player.
41:32He's kind of got a lot of juice. He's gets his hands on the football, but I think he has continued to develop into a very good corner.
41:40And now they've got this like hilarious, not hilarious, but like this weird problem, which is like, how do we even get barren on the field?
41:48It's, it's a funny one for Denver. Good problem to have.
41:51Good problem to have. I thought they were going to trade McMillan.
41:55Uh, um, I mean, it just made sense or, or trade Riley Moss.
41:58Uh, but Riley Moss is a good player too.
42:01Like, like you said, very battle tested when you're not Patrick Sertan and you got to be the other corner.
42:07Like they're going to throw the ball at you a ton there.
42:10So yeah, it's kind of like one of those wheels on like as if they can really win with four, then obviously
42:17the man coverage on the back end is going to be a little bit easier.
42:21So if that takes a step back, then maybe Riley Moss gets a little bit more exposed and stuff, but they got
42:28good depth in the, in the back seven. Yeah.
42:30I'll say final thing about the Broncos from like a complimentary football perspective, as we talk about the pass rush is, um,
42:37you know, this offense, if the offense improves as I think it's obvious, we think it will, uh, you get leads and the run defense is paramount.
42:45And by the way, they have an incredible run defense, uh, as well.
42:49So I DJ Jones, he's, there's like a football hipster pathion of players that just like every NFL dork loves.
42:55And I feel like DJ Jones, who do we talk about when we talked about the cheese?
43:00Oh, Taka. Yeah. Okay. Well, but Jones is up there where it's like, but they got DJ Jones.
43:05I was like, I love in San Francisco. It was the same way.
43:09So they're, they're just Zach Allen, maybe takes a little bit of a step back as he gets older in terms of, uh, run defense.
43:16But I still think it's a very good run defense.
43:19I'm not worried about the Broncos defense. I know I started with the Cooper stuff just because I do think it is
43:26kind of a sneaky big thing, but I think the offense will mitigate, help mitigate any issues there.
43:31All right. Speaking of the offense, potentially mitigating issues.
43:33Let's take a quick break. Come back and talk about the Chargers offense.

45:10The Chargers offense. Is the hype too much? Is it too hot?
45:13Because this is probably, this gotta be the most hyped offense in the offseason, right?
45:17Because of Mike Mediano. I mean, that's every year.
45:20It feels like the most hyped offense. I will say this.
45:23I'm very excited about it. There are some things that they do have to figure out.
45:28There's a lot of new pieces there. You know, sometimes the second year is when we see like the tree breakout.
45:34And then you do go back to the stats.
45:37You're like, what's the starting point that we're working with?
45:40They were 26 in EPA per play last year.
45:4323rd and passing EPA per play. And then same thing with rushing at 23rd overalls.
45:47Like the starting point was pretty bad. I'm obviously losing both your tackles and all the other nonsense that Herbert was dealing with in the interior.
45:55It's all new for a reason. But like the starting point, we do have to remember, it's like this was a pretty dysfunctional offense this last year.
46:03So a lot of things have to go right to be a top five offense.
46:07And then you do look at the history. Like whenever a Shanahan tree play caller has like a legit guy quarterback, like
46:13they throw for like 45 touchdowns a year. It's like Burrow, Matt Ryan, the Rogers seasons with before obviously Stafford most, most
46:20recently Baker Mayfield with like Liam Cohen went absolutely crazy.
46:23He's like the trend here is like offenses go Burr when it's a Shanahan guy and a really strong quarterback.
46:29So there's definitely upside here. Uh, as far as last year's disaster, just to kind of get into that for a second,
46:35because you know, whenever we do the Justin Herbert conversation and we'll talk about making excuses for him and whatnot, I was
46:42looking up last year because last year, the offense, both passing attack and the right game were statistically pretty bad.
46:48Uh, when Herbert threw the ball in under two and a half seconds, he was top 10 quarterback, no matter how you
46:54slice it, seventh and success rate, 10th in EPA, et cetera.
46:57When it was over two and a half seconds, everything plummeted to bottom 10.
47:01That's not a Justin Herbert stack. No, that's, uh, indicative of the fact that the charges offensive line at times felt like
47:08a jailbreak on every other play, particularly up the middle.
47:11And that is the one thing I will say to throw a little bit of cold water on, on some of this.
47:17The tackles are back, but we're sure. We're sure.
47:20I mean, the honest, very competent center. And I think McDaniel scheme does cover up interior offensive line play to some degree.
47:27We'll talk about that, but like Cole strange, uh, I guess Jake slaughter, maybe he's going to play guard in the NFL for the first time.
47:34I'm not, that's the one that it's the slaughter thing.
47:37Like Cole strange. Sure. Like one of your guards has to be cold strange.
47:41I like, I totally get it. And we were talking about a rookie player playing out of position.
47:47And, um, I went back and like looked at my, my notes on, on slaughter and great for the wide zone scheme.
47:53Can get out in space and stuff. Problem with anchoring.
47:56The problem with transitioning from center to guard is at guard.
47:59You have to win one-on-ones and pass protection where like you have to anchor where at center, there's a lot fewer snaps.
48:06There's one-on-one when you're just getting walked back. So I think that's going to be a potential issue.
48:11Now, if you're between, you know, Slater and be odd.
48:14Then you have like a decent chance here, but just in general for whatever it is, like there's been way too many free rushers with Herbert.
48:22So I think that Herbert's a very smart player, but for whatever reason, the scheme guys up front making mistakes, Herbert being
48:28surprised, whatever it is, there's been too many free rushers.
48:31And then with the dolphins, they kind of live on the edges with some of these things where they're willing to have
48:38a free rusher because that opens up this layered throw.
48:40And I think Herbert's going to be able to do it.
48:44I saw in like OTAs and in mini camp, they changed up his shock and footwork.
48:48So his other foot is in the front. That means that they can get the quick, the quick game going a little bit.
48:55So I think there's, there's a lot of moving pieces here.
48:58It all makes sense to me. Like this is like the direction they should be going, but you do have to nail
49:05all these things like right away in this kind of loaded divisions.
49:08Like that's where I'm optimistic. I might be even like more optimistic in 2027.
49:13And like, I want to draft these guys in 2026.
49:16Yeah. It might look better at the end of the year than it does at the beginning.
49:21Cause you're right. There's a lot of moving pieces.
49:23It's a pretty significant change. I do want to go back to something I said, which is like McDaniel kind of covers up the guards to some degree.
49:31And I do think, um, the emphasis on let's bring in a center and we have good tackles.
49:37You know, I think the goal here is to just keep Herbert out of obvious drop back situations and win on early downs.
49:44And I think what McDaniel does in the run game, we can talk about what he does in the past game and
49:50what it means for the skill players, which I also think is kind of interesting.
49:54Uh, is he, he, he is when you watch the dolphins offense, it's funny, by the way, I've been reading interviews and,
50:01uh, like, um, Dominic Fox was had interview with John Harbaugh.
50:04And I think I saw someone else. I think it was Ben Johnson.
50:08Everybody's watching the Mike McDaniel run game now from 2026.
50:11How could he not? Um, it's just so much bullshit and it's not, Hey man, go win.
50:16Right. It's so much. It's actually, it's funny. Cause like two, he is able through his primarily, I would say the use
50:22of motions more than anything able to create the illusion of running the football or threatening to run the football when there isn't like, it's so obvious.
50:30They're not going to run the football. It is really remarkable the way he creates conflict.
50:35I just did kind of like over use over generalize, um, conflict run past conflict, conflict from a leverage perspective, conflict from communication, all of it.
50:43So all of which is a, yes, I don't love the guards, but when I consider the fact that they also emphasized
50:49adding big bodies, Kolar, Njoku, Alec Ingold, who I think get ready to see so much goddamn Alec Ingold, man.
50:55Like, yep. Because I just think. McDaniel, even if there's a little bit of a, you know, in past protection, there's some struggles with these guards.
51:03I think McDaniel can really cover up a lot of it with how effective this run game can be.
51:08Um, I love Ryan Hampton. I think he's gonna be really, really good.
51:12I think Justin Herbert's gonna benefit from this, but like, oh, Mary Hampton might be the biggest winner of the entire off season.
51:19Yeah. I mean, all the stretch runs are gonna be fantastic.
51:22Like you said, it was the run game for the dolphins last year.
51:26It was Aaron Brewer who was out in space and just annihilating dudes like every single game.
51:31Like you can just watch a highlight tape from a center and get pumped up.
51:35And then Patrick Paul had a really nice season at left tackle.
51:39So they do have like the right bodies. If you're gonna go like, we're weak at guards.
51:44Well, so were the dolphins. Last year, they had a rookie playing out of position at one of the guard spots and
51:51it was a very tough season over there. Um, so I think they will be able to mask it.
51:56The run game is going to be fantastic. I see it the same way where it's going to be a lot of
52:03rotations at, I mean, they have three running backs.
52:05Not now. Vidal is a good pass protector. So I think he's going to play some of those snaps.
52:11Keaton Mitchell. He was a wanted poster guy. If you guys saw that story from McDaniel, hanging that on the GM's wall,
52:17like I need myself some Keaton Mitchell. So the other name was Alec Engel, though.
52:22It was like Alec Engel. That was my number one wanted.
52:25They signed him the next day on the office of Ortiz was Keaton Mitchell for a reason because he's, he's got some
52:31Devon HN qualities, not to the same extent, but very fast.
52:35Get him on the runs or on the outside.
52:37And to your point, that's exactly what Omarion Hampton kind of is at this point.
52:42He's kind of like almost like Derrick Henry in a way where like, I think that once he gets up to speed,
52:48he's a total pain in the butt. He's got, uh, not the craziest amount of wiggle, but enough wiggle.
52:54I thought he was a pretty indecisive between the tackles.
52:57Like there's one thing I'm a little bit nervous about was just, I think obviously when you're working through, through the trash
53:03of that offensive line, you're going to make some bad decisions.
53:07But for like a first round running back, that was kind of in the back of my head.
53:12So I can see this being a little bit of a committee throwing the fullback three tight ends in there.
53:18Gadston, uh, they got three or four, uh, wide receivers that they're going to rotate in.
53:22It's going to be like every single drive is just going to be something else out there.
53:27I think it's gonna be really hard to game plan against, but it's also gonna be maybe a little bit hard to
53:34execute in the first half of the season. I don't think this is going to be a 11 personnel team very much, but I do think.
53:42Lad McConkie can bounce back from what we saw last year, which I asked.
53:46That's the other thing I want to talk about because rookie season, Lad McConkie looked like the steel of the draft, incredibly productive started.
53:53Once they started using him at all three levels, you saw he was like a legit receiver who could win in a
53:59number of different ways, different routes, explosive, great with the ball in his hands.
54:03And then last year, they kind of, he kind of disappeared.
54:07Um, so I want to get your thoughts on like, did you, do you think it was just, um, him getting supplanted
54:13by Keenan Allen and, or do you, do you think there's anything with McConkie himself that needs to improve?
54:19I think both things happened. Uh, one of the first things was his catchable ball, right on his targets went from 78% to 67%.
54:26It's like already like that's 11% of your passes.
54:28It was just like, not his fault. So like that explains like a lot of it.
54:33He also did have less yards after catch per reception.
54:36And then the big thing was, and this was what surprised me during that rookie season was he was dominating contested catch situations way down the football.
54:44But I was like, if he's going to do this, like, then like he can be whoever he wants in the NFL.
54:51And then last year, I think it was three of 14.
54:54And he's always one of these guys just like picking himself off the ground.
54:58And like, that's always a little bit worrisome for, for his size and his injury history.
55:03Uh, they didn't run them quite as many downfield routes because Quentin Johnson took that big step.
55:08Uh, and then, so he was running a lot of the underneath stuff.
55:11And then obviously Keenan Allen's a little bit more physical underneath.
55:15So some of those passes kind of went there.
55:17So I think like four or five things kind of explain what happened to loud McConkey, but I know what I watched
55:24as a, as a rookie, if you can get back to that, like he's going to have huge, a huge season here.
55:30I wouldn't be surprised if there's a little bit of a rotation, like Trey Harris, a good blocker and maybe loud McConkey
55:37is off the field for a little bit more than we want.
55:40So like for fantasy, uh, rankings, like he goes in the fourth round, like next, like a Mecca, Buka and like Tedrow,
55:47McMillan, Luther burdens, like that type of range. That makes sense to me.
55:51There's a huge ceiling to chase here. Um, but last year, like was not the season I was expecting from him.
55:57Like personally. Yeah. I think it was a mix of things to your point.
56:01Um, one thing I looked up out of curiosity, FTN does you can on their stats, which is not in the guide.
56:07You can filter things by first read. And I was just wanted something I wanted to see was how often McConkey was targeted on first reads.
56:15And it was cut by almost 25% from last year and largely submitted by Allen.
56:19And I think a lot of that was on fair downs and stuff.
56:23And to go back to what I said about Herbert and the two and a half seconds, if it ain't the first
56:30read in this Chargers offense last year, it was part of the reason I think why there was like off target throws.
56:36He had more off target throws to him was because if he was getting targeted later in the progression, shit was going haywire.
56:43So, um, I do think, you know, him being a focal point for McDaniel will help.
56:48I do. And I do think, and there's a lot to like, to like, we talked about the toughness over the middle of the field.
56:55We think, assume the Chargers offense is going to be in way more, you know, in condensed formations.
57:00He has shown, um, the ability to fight through traffic and not downfield, but like on the short intermediate stuff.
57:06I thought his rookie year, he was really, really good at that.
57:10So I liked that too, putting him on the inside man in a bunch, for example.
57:15And then I think, um, defenses keyed in on him a bit more than last season.
57:19He got some like tasty matchups. I thought last year and you saw him beating like backers and when, you know, so
57:26I think, you know, that changed a bit. I'm interested in Johnson in this offense because, um, something that's been like missing
57:32with him since he's come into the NFL is how good he was with the ball in his hands in college.
57:38Think about those crossers TCU and the way he would pull away for massive gains.
57:43And I do wonder if that's something, again, thinking about this offense, the condensed formations, the crosser is working in the middle
57:49of the field, setting up yards after the catch.
57:52If he could also be a beneficiary of that.
57:55Yeah, I, I saw the same way. I thought TCU, I thought he was actually kind of flawed down the football field.
58:01He had like a couple like busted coverages, like in the biggest games of the season.
58:06But for the most part, a lot of his damage was like against like those big 12 defenses underneath where he's his
58:12like long speed that really takes off. So I can see that.
58:16I'm not sure if like, I would like throw him a bunch of screens.
58:20Like I'd rather do that with like lad McConkey.
58:23They're going to do that to like, I would do that to Hampton, like who I thought was pretty good as a receiver.
58:29He was really bad in protection, but like he can catch the football.
58:33Yeah. So I think that you're going to get some of that.
58:37The big thing is the dolphins with McDaniel were third in dropbacks per game with zero to two wide receivers on the field.
58:44And they were 29th, uh, with three plus wide receivers.
58:46So whoever's going to be on the football field, like is going to get the ball a lot.
58:52Like we saw with waddle and Tyree kill. Um, and they do have the Trey Harris was like a second round pick like this last year.
58:59Then they drafted Brendan Thompson, who is super fast and he was playing like X receiver in the sec and like actually had some good moments.
59:07So I'm kind of interested there. Charlie colder caught a bunch of passes in college was behind likely in Mark Andrews, but
59:14I think he's the best blocker on the team.
59:16And there's in theory, a chance that he gets going.
59:19Then Gadsden for like four weeks was like a top five fantasy guy.
59:23So somebody else is going to step up, but behind lad McConkey and Hampton, my guess might be like Keaton Mitchell might
59:30be like kind of like the change of pace guy that gets a lot of, uh, involved.
59:35He's on the dynasty team as well. Uh, yeah, that, that pairing.
59:38Uh, the trio rather of Kolar Gadsden and Joku is, I don't wanna say a budget version, but it reminds me a
59:45bit of Kolar Andrews and or Kolar likely in Andrews with guests and playing the likely role and Joku being, he would
59:51be a diet Andrews and you know, he's still good player.
59:54Um, yeah, a lot of 13, a lot of 21.
59:57I, yeah, fantasy. I wouldn't, I wouldn't Hampton. I would want, and that's about, you know, the receiver unfortunately goes like 14th overall.
60:04So it's like him versus Saquon Barkley. And I'm a little bit concerned at that price tag, but I hear you on the upside.
60:11He'll said that. Yeah. Cause I asked him a Hampton versus Gentry and he was like, I don't know, there's gonna be like a rotation in LA.
60:19Got me a little nervous. Yeah. And I've been like charges offense to the moon defense step back.
60:24And I really wanted to like, first I wanna acknowledge.
60:27I have been like, we're wrong about this charges defense now two years in a row.
60:32No, I've never said they've been bad, but I'm like, there's no way this is a top 10.
60:37I'm looking at it on paper every these last two years.
60:41And I've said, this doesn't look like a top 10 defense to me on paper.
60:45And then they continue to finish in, I think last year they were 10th in DV away.
60:50So now I'm pivoting to Jesse mentor was just him.
60:53And that's why I look stupid and now he's gone.
60:56So maybe I'm finally wrong. Where are we at on that charges fans?
61:00I'm ready to look dumb again. I mean, on paper, it does not look like it should be that good.
61:06It's not bad. Yeah. Not a bad defense. There's good players, but like there's stars.
61:10Yeah. I mean, the past few seasons, I had third in points allowed over the past few seasons.
61:15Like, like if you just looked at it, that is not the third best defense.
61:20Like I think probably mentor or Jesse mentors. Like that's, that's a big thing.
61:24I mean, it was very clear, like even like in college, that mentor was going to be one of the best, like NFL coordinators out there.
61:31Like all the best defenses in the NFL, Seahawks included the Ravens when they were really balling out a couple of years ago.
61:38Like it's this style defense. They can do a lot of zone coverage.
61:42Communication is outstanding there. They play physical. Now the new DC Chris O'Leary, we know not that much about except that Harbaugh sent him back to college.
61:50So he can be a defensive coordinator anticipating that mentor was going to leave.
61:54And then the second mentor does leave. He calls him back to the team to now be the defensive coordinator.
62:00That sounds like a good plan. Like there's a lot, there's like some like, like sense of like, this is like our
62:07next guy, like go send him to the minors.
62:09Like, yes, I was thinking it's like maybe just because I was watching House of the Dragon.
62:14Harbaugh is like the king sending like the next king to go rule a city somewhere in Norn or something.
62:20And they're bringing him. Harbaugh is crazy. I want, I have a take on this.
62:25Okay. So this is way too, I'm sweeping with painting with too white a brush.
62:29I am out on college OCs coming to the NFL.
62:32I am in on college DCs coming to the NFL.
62:35Was that late by the last few years, right?
62:37Like. Yeah. Awesome college defensive coordinators have come and been incredible.
62:41And, and Loliere has NFL experience and he was with the Chargers, but like offensive coordinators, we've had some real busts.
62:47Chip last year. I mean, what the heck was that?
62:50Rub in Seattle. Yeah. Right. So like, don't you feel like a little bit like, you know what?
62:55All right. It's probably gonna work. Like I, I'd be interested in thinking, I mean, it's a lot of that has to
63:02do with the McDonald Harbaugh, like Michigan tree and all that.
63:05But like, I guess I'm a little bit less nervous about it than if it was an offensive guy.
63:10To me, the defensive, like coaching and obviously I have no experience here, but it's so much communication.
63:16Just like watch the game, like how much like linebackers and safeties and corners have to sit there and communicate.
63:22Like you either are really good at communicating to your players to figure that stuff out or you're not.
63:27And because there's not that much man coverage, like you have to be good at that.
63:32And so I'm guessing that's like a huge skillset for, for the NFL defensive coordinators.
63:36And then with the college stuff, like just the splits and you know, the pacing and all that type of stuff.
63:43Maybe the offensive coordinators, like way too big of a change where on defense, it's like, I, we are still just communicating the zone rules at play here.
63:51So that's, that was like the, the big thing I had.
63:54There are some like players that are on and off the team now, like you lose away, but a key message or comes in.
64:01Oh, it was like chasing down so many sacks last year.
64:04Like the last couple of games of the season, like he was like fire boogeyman coming, coming across the field.
64:10Uh, I did like Mesidor. I know that he was older player, but I, I did think that his tape was pretty
64:17solid, kind of a boom bust player. Um, but had like a lot of big time moments and like Khalil Mack still
64:23getting it done, but also 35 years old. And then I liked their young guys in the secondary, like Tar he still.
64:30Um, but we're not talking about like, you know, the top corners in the NFL out there.
64:35It's just like German James and that very unique role.
64:38So yeah, I would guess that they would finish like maybe they are like 10th this year, 12th this year and not,
64:44you know, third in scoring that they have been the last couple of years.
64:48It, the, the, I, I read a little bit up on O'Leary and, um, about what's at Western Michigan and read that
64:55he was like a very aggressive, like a lot of blitzing.
64:58But I also am like, well, when you're outgun talent wise, you're coaching a small school.
65:03I don't really feel like it's transferable because you're just trying to like erase those advantages by creating havoc.
65:08So I don't think that necessarily means the chargers who don't blitz are going to suddenly become this like incredibly blitz heavy man coverage.
65:15It's just not, it's just also not like winter really like did a great job of building it around the skillset of the players he has.
65:23These are zone corners, you know, like the, uh, front, the way you get pressure, he was ran a lot of simulated
65:30pressures obviously, and was very successful in doing so.
65:32And I think, um, you know, I think the thing I would just say like to again, watching them about when I
65:39say they're well coached, like they just always felt like they had like three guys around the ball, you know?
65:45And I think that'll sustain. I mean, it's the same most, it's a lot of the same players with, as you mentioned, a few changes.
65:52Uh, but I do think like you have to acknowledge the loss of mentor and how that could potentially impact the group just like on the margins.
66:00Yeah. And like Tony Jefferson still listed as a starter.
66:03He's been around for a very long time. In Molden?
66:06Um, yeah. Yeah. And they have Genesis Smith. I think it's like 34.
66:10His, his, his birthday is, is older than, older than mine, which if I was playing in the NFL, my, my legs are so sore already.
66:17I can't believe that these guys are able to do this still, but I was looking like with O'Leary Western Michigan ninth
66:24in scoring last year on defense, you know, at Western Michigan.
66:27Uh, so like there's, there's probably something to it.
66:30I just, you know, I thought Jesse mentor was like the second or third best defensive player calling the league last, last year.
66:36So like, I'm guessing O'Leary is not going to be the second or third best.
66:41I would guess. Also, they'll be put in, you know, I talked about situational football with the Broncos.
66:46They'll probably be put in better positions by the offense.
66:49If things go as we suggest. And I look at this group and I still think there'll be good against the run.
66:56They added, they did add Dalvin Tomlinson, Caldwell up front, tired tart, the backers, the same, they're great tackling defense.
67:01So I'm ready to look stupid again. Chargers fans.
67:04I really am. I'm not, I want to be clear.
67:07I'm not saying I, I think the minimum be above an average defense.
67:11I just like talent wise. I always look at that.
67:14I'm like, they were better than the sum of their parts.
67:17I think I'll just say that. I do think it's interesting.
67:20O'Leary, um, like coach James. And that's a good thing too, because he was a safety coach in 224 because James is
67:27the straw that obviously stirs the drink in that defense.
67:30Did he just get paid? Did he just give him a new contract?
67:34I feel like. They should. Yeah. I don't remember.

69:15Different kind of goals this season for Vegas. I think the most important goal and the thing that has to be accomplished
69:21is putting Fernando Mendoza in a situation where he doesn't, where he can grow and it looks competent.
69:26So let's start there. Is this a good enough situation for Fernando Mendoza?
69:30Or are we just saying Tyler Linderbaum and ignoring everything else?
69:33I mean, I'm not even sure if I can get to that point because I don't even know how much he's actually going to play.
69:41Oh, we're going to play. Come on. How long have we been doing this?
69:45I think he's going to play like half the season.
69:48How long have we been doing this? Do teams stick with that?
69:51Yeah. I would say like week eight. They're by weeks like week 13.
69:55But we might like go half the season with Kirk Cousins and stuff.
69:59The schedule, let me pull it up. Because I remember I always like to look for like the soft spot in the schedule.
70:06And it's actually, it's not a great, the schedule is not set up well for him to play early.
70:11To me, like the difference is like it's Tom Brady is like saying, I didn't do this.
70:16We're not going to do this. Like that's where I think, you know, there's maybe more pressure versus like, you know, Joe
70:23Blow saying like we're going to, this is our plan.
70:26Maybe he'll be busy wrestling or whatever the hell he's doing.
70:29What is, what is going on? I don't know.
70:32Yeah. So through week eight, because then week five, you got a brutal stretch.
70:36You get Patriots, Bills, Rams, Jets. But then you get Niners, Seahawks, Broncos.
70:40Jesus. I mean, the problem is just you're in this division.
70:43So like, yeah, that's where I feel like, you know, maybe it's that Jets game, like kind of early on, you know,
70:49the defense isn't going to be very good. The schedule is what it is.
70:54They're figuring it out on, on offense. If it looks a lot better this year, like, like you just said, that they
71:00don't have, you know, the UCLA Bruins head coach calling plays.
71:03They have the Super Bowl winning offensive coordinator calling plays like that seems good.
71:07Colton Miller shouldn't play four games like he did last year.
71:11And he's been a top 10 guy over the last three years.
71:14According to PFF past blocking grades. Like he's been doing that forever.
71:18Linderbaum's a big signing. They need him to be.
71:20They paid him $9 million more per year than the previous top paid center and Creed Humphrey.
71:25And I'm not sure if he's actually, I know he's not better than Creed Humphrey.
71:30But yeah, so I think Mendoza is going to be a storyline here.
71:34I just fear it's going to be like November or December.
71:37And like at that point, like I don't even need to tune into Raiders games aside for the Brock Bauer stuff.
71:43I feel like, look, okay. It's Clint Kubiak. Going to get a lot of tight ends.
71:48They also, I sneakily think, speaking of like fullbacks, Connor Hayward, they added.
71:52The Seahawks really like using a fullback, Rob Butts, last season.
71:55And I think this run game wouldn't be surprised if we see a decent amount of Hayward too.
72:00I think the offensive line should be better. Although I am very worried about the entire right side.
72:05Yes, very, very much so. But I really wish they added a receiver.
72:09And maybe they will. But right now, Jack Bash, Trey Tucker, Jalen Naylor.
72:13It's tough. I have a pet peeve, which is I hate when B guys are like, they like the guys they have.
72:20They shouldn't. They might like him. Could you love somebody though?
72:23Like get something that you love. It's like when, like we should use that language when we know somebody's in an unhappy relationship.
72:30And like they're like, they like the guy they have.
72:33And it's like, do you really? You like him?
72:35Because it's not good enough. I think that it all starts to me over whether this could be a competent run game.
72:42Because we know they're going to run the ball heavily.
72:45Ashton Gentry, their Raiders running backs last year. They're average 1.71 yards before contact for carry, which is worse than the NFL.
72:51Five Adel Hill teams had twice that, including the Denver Broncos, which is insane.
72:55So I think everyone's kind of leaning on can't be that bad.
72:59But is that like a good bar? I think it can't be that bad.
73:03Like, I mean, we do this thing in the offseason, you know, from doing this for like the last, you know, handful of years.
73:10We're like, we kind of like take the positive spin on every team.
73:14And then like, at some point, there's half the league where we're like, I can't.
73:18And I do think the Raiders are obviously going to be atop that list.
73:22Because the glaze stuff at right tackle was really bad.
73:25Jackson Powers Johnson, they just like have not figured that out.
73:29Now, to be frank, it was Pete Carroll's son as the offensive line coach last year.
73:33There's probably a big upgrade coming there. It's like those type of things.
73:37They should get better. But I was going to ask you about Gentry.
73:41Obviously, like he's going to get way better because the offensive line, everything's going to get better.
73:46Obviously, when you're watching him, I saw a difference maker out in the open field and that he was making a lot of guys miss.
73:53He's a pain in the butt to tackle. I'm not sure if I saw like super decisive, super fast foot quickness compared
74:00to, you know, you have to like look at like Saquon Barkley is like, this is what we're trying to aim for.
74:06He's not going to be Gibbs or Bijon. Is he going to be Saquon?
74:10Is he going to be anywhere near that? I had my doubts.
74:14Like, I almost like view him like closer to like, you know, Josh Jacobs.
74:18Which is like a really strong running back. But I had my concerns going back and just watching him like throwing out all of the bad plays.
74:26Be like, is he like, is he an all pro?
74:29Like, are we really sure he's like going to be that guy?
74:32I have a feeling he's going to be a tier below what we were expecting.
74:37With all the obviously caveats that we already provided about how shitty the situation was and how insane everything was in Vegas and how bad it all was.
74:45I thought he looked more elusive than explosive. Definitely.
74:48And if you think about like Clint Kubiak and this being like an under center wide zone run game, I don't know
74:54if he's like the best fit exactly for it.
74:57But I do think if there's some issues with the offensive line, he can help mask those in a way that like
75:03a Kenneth Walker doesn't to be blunt. Kenneth or like, you know, how do I put it?
75:08Like, like Darian Price, who the Seahawks just drafted.
75:11You're like, I get it. Right. One cut. Bam.
75:14And gente to me is I actually feel like I'm trying to think of like what, like Denver.
75:19He'd be awesome. I think I just think I don't know if he's ever going to be like if he's going to
75:26be like one of those, like you said, like those top five explosive play backs.
75:30He's not be John Robinson to me, but I do think he has some creative and eraser or creative potential and erases
75:36some bad plays in a way where he can bring this thing up to average.
75:41I think he's a good back. I think he's good.
75:44Like Brees Hall, I think is maybe somewhat a little bit similar.
75:47I think Brees Hall's got maybe a little bit more juice and gente is a little bit more of a bowling ball.
75:54But the good news with gente is he's a really effective pass catcher.
75:58And I do think they have no choice that they have to get that going more.
76:02He's going to be tasked with pass protection because his backup is Mike Washington.
76:06Like you can't throw out a boom bust style rookie out there.
76:10So he's going to be tasked with playing a bunch of the passing downs.
76:14I know he is good as a receiver there.
76:17And I hope that he just speeds up his own pacing.
76:20I think a lot of the yards before contact numbers was because the offensive line.
76:24But there was some plays. I do think that he was just like his feet were stopped and he's kind of looking
76:31around and then all of a sudden he got hit.
76:34So I think he's a good running back. I'm not sure if he's like going to be an elite one.
76:40And then I think on the flip side, Brock Bowers, like he had a terrible season because of the knee.
76:46There's no question like that. That is a superstar.
76:48How's he going to use him? Because, okay, so like the entire Seahawks offense ran through, you know, Jack, not entire, but
76:55like Jackson, but had like, I'm sure the most targets, this is your account.
76:59You guys look at this stuff closely. I'm sure.
77:02The highest target share by like three or four percentage points.
77:05It was crazy. So your best player is a tight end.
77:08Everybody knows this. And there are offenses where you can flow through that, right?
77:12Like we've seen that model by Arizona. Their best player is a tight end at times in Kansas City.
77:18It's been Travis Kelsey, certainly against certain defensive looks.
77:20But it's not as simple as saying, oh, cool.
77:23He's, we can line him up outside like most of the time or on the backside of and treat him like our number one.
77:30And he is a tight end. It's different. Like, you know, you, the way he is used, obviously I'm not saying I'm not comparing him to JSN.
77:38Nobody thinks that. But like, this is, it's a little bit tricky for me to imagine him getting that level of target that we saw with JSN.
77:46Yeah. Yeah. I mean, the JSN stuff is silly because he was, he became excellent down the field.
77:51Like it plus like the ins and outs, like he was, he had everyone dancing.
77:56So like that's an impossible, not impossible, but it's nearly impossible bar to clear.
78:00I think they can use them like Drake London.
78:03You know, if we're going to throw it, comparing the wide receivers, Drake London would be one.
78:08There's a little bit of Puka Nakua overlap there.
78:10So I do think that like, there is a huge season waiting for Brock Bowers.
78:15My little notes on him, 65 yards per game through his first two seasons are the most to start a two year
78:21career at tight end since at least 2000. Like the next closest guys are like all the hall of famers, your gates,
78:28your Kelsey's Gronk skills, all those type of guys.
78:30So like he's in the right range. He's actually at the very top of that.
78:35And then I was Ryan Paganetti. He's just all of a sudden just blown up on Twitter.
78:40Former staffer for the Eagles doing like analytics and like helping out coaching coaches do game plans.
78:45He was at the Raiders last year and he tweeted, quote, we had a goal last year in Las Vegas of single
78:51season record for catches and targets for Brock Bowers before the week one injury.
78:55And like, that's where I think this thing's going.
78:58Like, I think the defense is going to be mediocre to bad.
79:01And like you said, the wide receivers are terrible.
79:04I think they're only going to run the ball so much behind that offensive line.
79:09Like I think Brock Bowers is going to go absolutely crazy there.
79:12And I do think he's as close to a wide receiver as we see with tight end.
79:17Like, yeah, that's what I think I'm thinking about.
79:20I mentioned Kelsey and McBride. I'm trying to think of like other historical example.
79:24You know what I mean? Of like Kelsey, like three by one step where he's like the guy just in isolation.
79:30Part of the reason that worked is that, I mean, they did that mostly with when Tyreek Hill was well.
79:36I don't know. I just if I'm a defense, like who are you worried about?
79:40Like, I think that's just I understand that he's going to consume like most of the volume here.
79:46And I think like to be clear, like Naylor is a good player.
79:49Besh was clearly underutilized. They all want to play the slot.
79:53Like I like Naylor in the slot. I like Jack Besh as a slot receiver.
79:57Like Trey Tucker is going to be their ex and he is really small.
80:01So like Michael Mayer, he actually did a lot of, you know, tight end stuff in college.
80:06Or a slot stuff in college. Like they have five guys that want to play the slot and they have one or two slot options per snap.
80:14And like Gentry is going to line up out wide on occasion there and run some of those little routes as well.
80:21So it's like this is where Kubiak is looking at this.
80:24Like I just don't have the right guys yet.
80:27This is going to take three, four years. Yeah.
80:29That's just on offense. I just think if they added like one.
80:33Maybe like a problem is like it's like there's extra receivers don't grow on trees, but like if they're fair was.
80:39I mean, they can't do the stuff like their history.
80:42Like the Raiders can't be in the. Like it's like, I just wish they had one more receiver.
80:47That's all. You know, I'm excited for Mendoza. I was very high on him.
80:51Talked about him a lot ahead of the draft Raiders fans.
80:55You know, I'm not going to get into all of that again.
80:58I think. Okay. So just to kind of put a bow on this where we wrap with the Raiders defense.
81:04I think what I'll say about like Ken Mendoza be successful.
81:07Is this good enough? If this run game can approach average so that he's not on third and long.
81:13Then I think yes. But that to me is kind of the barometer here.
81:17And whether or not the run game can approach average.
81:20You're going to need. Much decent play on the right side of that offensive line.
81:24I think for this to work, even with, you know, a full bag, all the big bodies.
81:29Yeah. That's important. I don't like their chances. Yeah.
81:32All right. Defensively. Patrick Graham out. I think people will be surprised to learn.
81:36The Raiders were 14th in defensive DVOA, which we'll get to the Steelers, but tip to Patrick Graham, because he kept the
81:43thing looking competent, despite some real talent deficiencies. And I think deserves a lot of credit for that.
81:48But some interesting splits. They were six in DVOA on first down, 29th on third down.
81:53Uh-oh. Yeah. They were better against the pass in the run, though.
81:56A lot of that had to do with the absence of pressure, I think, and also some real issues on the back end, which we'll get to.
82:04Bring in a new defensive coordinator, Rob Leonard, who has NFL experience.
82:08I think the expectation, reading some of the Raiders coverage, is that it's going to be Mike McDonald-y like.
82:13He was with him in Baltimore. So, you know, we talk about the Mike McDonald defense on this pod, split safety, zone
82:20heavy, light boxes, four-man rush, simulated pressures, just to oversimplify some of the things you might see.
82:25Talent-wise, they did add players. There was a focus here, at the game of the expense of taking a receiver, and also in free agency.
82:32Linebacker room is remade with former teammates, N'Kobe Dean and Kway Walker.
82:36Quiddy Pays, now opposite Max Crosby, but they drafted Kieran Cofford out of Auburn's player I liked.
82:41And then they drafted Jermon McCoy, fourth round, ending his fall.
82:44But otherwise, the secondary, oh, they added Taron Johnson to play.
82:47All right. So, I guess, let's start from with like a positive.
82:51One, you're coming off of an above average, statistically, defensive season.
82:54What do you think is the case for the Raiders defense to continue improving this season?
82:59Like, when you look at that group, like, what makes you think that could happen?
83:03I think just more depth, kind of everywhere, is probably the place to start.
83:07There's a couple seasons there in a row where the secondary was just starting.
83:11Like, all three of the guys, it was really below average.
83:15Like, I really like, like trade on Stoops, their second rounder.
83:18Oh yeah, I should have met him. Yes. He was, like, he was, he was really good that last season.
83:24He kind of played between positions. I think that he can push, uh, Teron Johnson maybe by the end of the season
83:30and like Jermon McCoy, like you never know. Apparently he's going to be ready for, for training camp.
83:35So you don't know what ready means, but like, if that hits, that would be a big deal.
83:41Um, via, even like just like, you know, Eric Stokes, Jeremy Chandler, they at least have like guys that have played, played football before.
83:48Stokes was pretty good last year and they paid him.
83:51Um, and like, it's not always perfect to look at covered stats, but he was actually ninth in passer rating allowed eighth
83:57in success rate and tied for first in yards per snap.
84:01Um, wow. So he was not the problem. The problem was they were 32nd in DVO versus number two wide receivers.
84:07Safety play was bad. And the safety play was also, yeah.
84:10So it was kind of everyone but him. He was decent.
84:13I think either you need Darian Porter to take a leap or you need McCoy to beat him.
84:18You need Johnson to stabilize things or you need Stokes to be, you know, like there's options to your debate about depth.
84:25Um, and then I think the improved linebacker play is massive.
84:28I mean, this is a good linebacker group. Now Walker and Dean, I, not only do I like them as upgrades on
84:35what we saw last year and not losing spleen, I think hurt them.
84:39I like them together. Like I think those two backers fit well.
84:42They're like complimentary players where he can be the signal caller and then Walker can just go and be explosive.
84:48So I, I like this group much better than last season.
84:51Yeah. There's, there's definitely more upside with just in terms of, you know, the, the level of talent there.
84:57So like, yeah, like you said, the, the linebacker play, it's a yin and yang.
85:01And hopefully that makes both of them better. Dean's had some big time injuries, a very unique player, um, as well.
85:07But yeah, Quay Walker is the one where I don't think I would have been the one to sign him to the
85:14contract, but in theory, you know, having him next to the guy he's played football with should help him out.
85:20And then beyond that, even the, the edge rushing group, uh, Quiddy pay really one dimensional.
85:24I think he was 10th in ESPN, uh, run block, or run stuff, win rate, whatever the definition is.
85:30Uh, but it does not have any juice as a pass rusher.
85:34And then K Ron Crawford, I thought was really interesting.
85:37They got him in the third. Yeah. He was, he was really explosive and he would be like out there in coverage.
85:43And then they would loop them inside. And I thought he had like legit moves as a pass rusher.
85:49And I, I guess they traded for, uh, Max Crosby this off season, whatever we're calling that.
85:54It's like, he's back, but off of a torn meniscus that obviously the Ravens didn't like to have.
85:59So it's, it's, it's one of these things where the Raiders defense for the last five years has probably been like with
86:05the worst defense in the NFL on average. They're nowhere near that at this point, but trying to get like a good,
86:12like a read on the situation to me, I found was like too difficult with all the, the moving parts, the Crosby thing.
86:19Okay. So like from what I've heard with Baltimore, the, and I could be wrong here, but it seems like their concern wasn't about this season with him.
86:27Yeah. It's about the future. And so we're talking about this season and for the Raiders, the L is not this season.
86:33It's that either he's going to decline in the future or they won't be able to trade him.
86:39There was no more trade chatter after that. Um, so I think it, you know, the world where like Max Crosby comes back, looks fine.
86:46And everyone's like the Raiders Ravens are liars. And that's not at all like the dynamic, but I do think like, you
86:53know, last year when he played, like he was still amazing against the run.
86:57He's still a good player. Um, even if he's lower, it's like his snaps, like why, like maybe he doesn't have to
87:03play a thousand and a hundred snaps this year because you know, like Malcolm Coons also like that was somebody before his injury.
87:10He was like top 10 and the nerdy metrics as well too.
87:13It's like, like four guys now, or maybe like, maybe Max Crosby should play 846 snaps this year.
87:19that would be another Mike McDonald thing is to use more of a rotation.
87:23Uh, if, uh, Rob Leonard was to go in that direction, but, but McDonald also had a stacked group and this isn't a stacked group.
87:30Um, so, you know, we'll see. I think, success for, I always talk about this with like teams who aren't like competitors
87:37who aren't like contenders or playoff teams. Cause I don't think they're a playoff team.
87:41Success is 99% of it. It was just Mendoza not getting killed back there and looking like a good pick.
87:47But for defense, I think, um, you want a, you want Dean and Walker to work because that was your big move.
87:54And then I would think you'd want like one of these draft picks that we've mentioned to hit, whether it's McCoy's the
88:00dream because of how good his tape was pre injury.
88:03But if it's Stooks or Crawford, you know what I mean?
88:06Like just, if someone looks like a guy, then you at least have start to have like a young core.
88:12You feel good about, especially as Crosby kind of enters the twilight of his career.
88:17yeah. And sometimes with these defensive coordinators, like we just don't see them coming.
88:21And it's like, yeah, in theory that could be Leonard, you know, like I have no notes on Leonard.
88:26Um, but you know, sometimes these guys pop out, out of nowhere and then they are actually very effective.
88:32So it comes from the right tree at least.
88:34Yeah. I was going to say is Mike McDonald might be the new, I had coffee with Mike McDonald.
88:40So it should be. Yeah. That's how good of a coordinator he is.
88:44Like he should be treated as McVeigh. No, I mean fully like, look, it's, it's, that's what I was very high on.
88:50I mentioned O'Leary, not very high, but like it's, there's a case for optimism there.
88:55Um, all right. Well, Hmm. Was that we, did I sound too low in the Raiders?
89:00I, I think. Okay. Just to kind of, you know, I, I really liked the Mendoza pick.
89:05I'm optimistic about him. I think things are getting better.
89:07I think it was the right coach. I am just a little bit apprehensive of the people like that.
89:13There were still missing pieces on both sides of the ball.
89:16I think that's how I would sum it up.
89:19They're way better. They're like, it's like a real organization again.
89:22Um, but you know, we're, we're here for 20, 28.
89:25Yes. Oh, 28. I mean, that's kind of just, we've got to be realistic every once in a while.
89:31All right. Well, it has come the time to rank the teams.
89:34Oh no. Okay. So I'm going to, I'm going to talk out loud all off season.
89:39I've been Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, Raiders. I feel good about the Broncos as my number one.
89:44You said you have them as a super bowl team.
89:47I have, I was just asked about the AFC and I, and they, the power rankings, they've consistently been the top AFC team.
89:53I just, the team is so like stacked. Um, I'm, I, I, I've, I still feel good about the Chargers, I'm going
90:00to go, I'm going to stick with it. Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs.
90:03Don't love it. Raiders. I see the same way.
90:06Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs. I'll, I'll do the cop out thing.
90:09And this, how annoying I'm going to be. All three make the playoffs.
90:13Hey, you know, they're all, I think I was looking at the markets.
90:16They're all favored to make the playoffs. Really? All three.
90:19Like that's how close this thing is. Like it's about even on who's going to win the division, but all three of
90:26them are, um, more likely than not expected to make the playoffs.
90:29Now all three together. That's a totally different, you know, mathematical equation, but those are three T three, really good teams.
90:36I do think the Broncos, I would make them first though.
90:39The AFC is going to be a beast to untangle.
90:42Cause as I've been doing these power rankings, one thing that's very obvious is the NFC is very top heavy.
90:48And then you can eliminate a lot. The AFC is like.
90:51Fifth, like eight teams that are, you're like, they're good.
90:54So it's hard to, they don't have as much of a middle class as the NFC.
90:59And yeah, like you're like off all three teams from this division, make the playoff.
91:03Who are you cutting Cincinnati? Are you not here to answer that?
91:07I'm only on one preview. I'm out of here.
91:09All right. Remind folks where they can check out your pod.
91:12Uh, yeah. Josh Norris over at Yahoo. We'll be doing shows with Nate Tice, Matt Harmon, Justin Boone and, and the other out there.
91:19It's a really exciting time. They have college football NFC for the first time.
91:24So if you guys are into that type of thing, um, true sicko stuff, Notre Dame plus the, the power four conferences
91:30and obviously all the, the regular Yahoo fantasy stuff out there.
91:33But, uh, first show is, um, the 27th with Matt Harmon.
91:37So that'll be fun. I need to listen. Cause I'm in a dynasty, that dynasty league.
91:41Danny Kelly is also in it. Uh, we've been doing it for years now.
91:45Uh, however, they don't call me the, the, the Howie Roseman of the league, but I did draft Harold fan and junior.
91:52And I actually might, I, I had Kelsey forever.
91:55People love hearing about your dynasty teams. And I, so like I, you know, obviously that's the, he continues to be a
92:01factor for Kansas city, but I, I draft Trey McBride and fan.
92:05And so I've just been like so good drafting tight ends, but my receivers group is awful.
92:10Just atrocious. I'm the same boat. I got, I got pits, but low on pits.
92:14And then I got a Rhonda Gadsden, like the fourth round.
92:17Uh, but my, my wide receiver three is like Keenan Allen.
92:20So he's not even on a football team. So I don't know what happened there.
92:25It's not great. I think I'm, I started. Rashad, not or something even somebody worse.
92:29I can't remember. It's pretty, it's pretty grim. I started Titans era, Tyler Lockett at one point.
92:34It happens. The dynasty of leagues are it's, it's insane.
92:37It's a two quarterback league. I still have, why are we doing this for ourselves?
92:42I still have Derek Carr on my team. I'm holding it onto him.
92:45Yeah. Just in case, just in case. He seems undecided.
92:48Yeah. Yeah. All right. Well, uh, that was the AFC West.
92:52Thank you so much for, to Hayden for joining us.
92:55Go check out his podcast. Uh, we'll be back next week to do the NFC South.
92:59Ooh, that division. Uh, and as I mentioned, power ranks, we will continue, uh, until morale improves.
93:04Bill Simmons is up next. Thank you. As always, by the way, to the folks at Omaha production.
93:10Sorry. I was so happy to get off that joke.
93:13I forgot to say thank you to Kirsten, to Becky Owen, Saylor, Jack Foster, and Tucker Tosh.
