Patrick Mahomes showed significant discomfort operating under center as a passer in Week 1 against Denver, going 0 for 4 on under-center throws. He consistently overthrows Taequan Thornton on deep shots from under center. Despite Kansas City's dominant 31-point output, Mahomes did not have to do much beyond scrambling; his best play was a pivot route to Travis Kelce that resulted in a 59-60 yard gain after a missed tackle. The pass game was not in rhythm under center, suggesting the Chiefs' passing attack may need to improve before facing tougher defenses.NegativeInjurySep 9, 2026

May see reduced pass attempts and increased under-center usage with Kenneth Walker's arrival; Mahomes led the NFL in pass attempts and nearly doubled his rushing yards per game last year due to offensive necessity; with a functional run game, the Chiefs may evolve the scheme with Eric Biennemi (who ran outside-zone, under-center concepts in Chicago) to take pressure off Mahomes and allow more play-action and deep shots; training camp clips show increased under-center looks.NegativeProjectionJul 22, 2026
Chiefs finished 6-11 but had a Pythagorean win expectation of 9.5 wins based on point differential (per FTN Football Almanac); they were 1-9 in one-score games and had only one miss on opponent field goals, both historically bad outcomes unlikely to repeat; positive regression case suggests Mahomes and the offense should improve significantly from last year's performance.PositiveProjectionJun 3, 2026
Mahomes had a pedestrian year in many ways but finished in the top eight scoring eight times out of 14 games played due to his rushing ability, demonstrating the value of a running quarterback.
