1:07Hello, everyone, and welcome in. Today we are talking Broncos with Cody Roark of Mile High Sports and the host of Locked on Broncos.
1:14Cody, how are we doing today? Good, my friend.
1:16You know, rookies report for training camp tomorrow and then the veterans report on the 28th.
1:21And the one thing I just can't contain my excitement for is that we're one step closer to football right here in Denver.
1:27The weather is really nice right now. And, you know, if you're out in the Denver area, like the one thing I'm
1:33looking forward to is being back at practice to smell the fresh cut grass.
1:37Sounds of the whistles going, pads popping. Like that's what gets me excited about this upcoming season.
1:42So happy to chat with you here today. Love it.
1:45Yeah, we're going to dive into all things skill player and offense today.
1:48And just starting with probably the biggest change, right?
1:51The paint brings in Davis Webb, you know, more importantly, hands of play calling duties, which I thought was really interesting.
1:56You know, what do you expect now that Davis Webb's calling the call calling the shots for now?
2:01But what do you expect to change from an offensive scheme from last year now that this is happening this year?
2:07I think the fundamentals of the scheme are going to remain intact.
2:11You know, there's a lot of, you know, we say Sean Payton's offense, but Sean Payton says, you know, he says, I read all the time.
2:18You know, people are saying, oh, Sean's offense, Davis Webb's offense.
2:21He goes, it's the Broncos offense. So that's Sean's PR way of saying, you know, I think conceptually a lot of things
2:27that Sean has has done throughout his entire coaching career are going to remain intact.
2:31But I think with Davis Webb, you might see some more of a modernized touch on certain things.
2:36Now, the Broncos last year, I'll say this, and even going back to Sean's first year, there was not a lot of motion from skilled players, right?
2:44And look, motion has a purpose. And I think a lot of people look into Dayton and say, oh, you know, who
2:50are the teams that motion the most? What do they do?
2:53Motion often at times is designed to set some things up.
2:56Now, I think if we look at the Miami Dolphins offense when Mike McDaniel was there and when he was really good,
3:02we saw so much motion within that offensive unit just because of the skilled players that they had.
3:07But more importantly, it changed the way the defense had to play.
3:10Like you had to cheat, like if you were lined up in a certain look, you get motion, you have to shift over.
3:17Your coverage responsibilities may change. And then Mike McDaniel would hit you with the counter that.
3:21If we get an aggressive flow to the side of the motion, we're going to go backside, you know?
3:26So the Broncos offense adding motion, it's not going to be this game changing thing, but I think it can add some
3:32new wrinkles to the offense that they probably haven't had in the last handful of years.
3:37And what better way to do it than guys like Marvin Mims, Jaylen Waddle, the new exciting offseason addition.
3:42So I think for me, that's one thing that we'll notice from Davis Webb that I saw during OTAs and mandatory minicamp.
3:48A lot more motion used so far, and we'll see if that trend continues once training camp begins and we get into
3:54the preseason and into the regular season. Well, sure.
3:57And you kind of alluded to it, right? Like this wide receiver room is super interesting, and we're going to dive into
4:03that and, you know, all that comes with that.
4:05You know, the Broncos as a whole are ultra interesting.
4:08Kind of new backfield dynamic, new or tons of wide receiver talent, I'd like to say.
4:13But let's kind of talk about where it all starts, right, with Bo Nix.
4:16So, you know, two solid seasons already in the league.
4:19You know, what do you think Bo has to do to take that next step?
4:23You know, he's been fundamentally sound. He's put it together again year over year.
4:27But what does he need to continue to grow as a passer?
4:31And then, you know, what do you really want to see from him this year that shows that he's elevated to that next step?
4:37Matt, you know, I think there's evident areas of everyone's game that can improve, I think, for Bo the most.
4:43But this is also something that plays into what is one of the bigger strengths of him, like his pocket mobility, his
4:49ability to extend plays with his legs. He's got eyes in the back of his head.
4:53That's why, you know, I think he's one of the least sack quarterbacks in the NFL in the last two seasons.
4:59Sacked only 22 times last year, which was the best in the NFL.
5:03I think at times there are the critique or the gripe would be like, hey, can Bo just stay in a clean pocket a little bit longer?
5:10Right. There's some time there's some times where there is a clean pocket, but he's sensing and maybe anticipating pressure.
5:16And then he kind of bails out of a clean pocket.
5:19But that's not like a consistent thing for him.
5:21It's it's time to time. And it ends up working out in terms of positive plays for him because of his mobility and his legs.
5:28I mean, we saw it against the Houston Texans.
5:31The game tied late in the fourth quarter. Third down, I believe it's kind of one of those design rollouts.
5:36But the defense over pursues and they caught wind of that on several plays during that game.
5:41He uses legs 25 yards to help set up the Will Lutz game winning, you know, kick there at the end.
5:47So for me, it's staying in the pocket a little bit more.
5:50You know, a lot of people are saying, you know, Bo is not very accurate.
5:54I disagree. I think Bo is a consistently accurate quarterback.
5:57I think some of the things we do see at times is and specifically last year, there were some times where he
6:03overthrew a couple of guys right in terms of his arm.
6:06But his on throw target percentage last season was around 77 percent.
6:10According to pro football reference, he had a 15.1 bad throw percentage last season.
6:13And he led the NFL in overall passing attempts.
6:16So and there are 43 drops by Broncos skill players last season.
6:19So I think Bo is in a really good spot.
6:22And I feel like the biggest thing that's going to factor into Bo Nix having a run game around him.
6:28Since he's coming to the NFL, the Broncos run game has been inconsistent.
6:31It's been up and down. It hasn't been there.
6:34You know, even though the J.K. Dobbins last year, you know, going into week 10, I think he was a fifth leading
6:40rusher in the NFL at 700 something yards. When he went down with the injury, the Broncos run game kind of just really disappeared down the stretch.
6:47But they haven't really had that in terms of an overall run game since Bo's been there.
6:52There's been times where Bo on a consistent basis is your leading rusher.
6:56That's not necessarily what you want all the time.
6:58So if the Broncos run game takes off, Bo Nix is going to have less pressure on his shoulders to go and have to do everything.
7:05And I think we'll see a sharper. I say even a more confident both that does take place.
7:10I mean, I think everyone would love a more confident Bo, right?
7:14Just gets that ball pushing down the field. But you did allude to it, right?
7:18It starts in the backfield. And you brought up Dobbins.
7:21So I think we just start with him. You know, he is the RB1.
7:24Correct me if I'm wrong here. You know, how do you feel about Dobbins being utilized in this offense this year?
7:30Again, assuming he's healthy for the full year. Do we expect the same thing?
7:34And then one thing I did notice, you know, just looking through the stats is, you know, is do you think there's
7:40any way that Dobbins ends up more involved in the passing game this year?
7:44You know, in previous stops, he's been involved. Seemed like he was only, you know, target.
7:49I think it was a little bit over one target per game average last year in Denver.
7:53Do you expect anything like that to change at all this year?
7:57No, I expect that to probably stay the same.
7:59Look, I think there are going to be times where they do go to him and they target him.
8:04It just, I think it really depends. But I mean, for them, they view RJ Harvey as that all around Alvin Kamara,
8:10you know, run the ball to be a receiving threat out of the backfield.
8:14I don't think the expectation for a guy like RJ is to hit a thousand yards rushing.
8:19I think the idea is that RJ can be a thousand yard all purpose back, right?
8:24When you combine rushing and receiving. JK is more of the guy you think can probably get as the thousand yard rusher.
8:30But there's another wrinkle that's getting added to that.
8:32Obviously, we talk about the health of JK. JK is going to be your primary ball carry.
8:37And part of the issue of the Broncos run game last year when JK was healthy is that there were times where
8:43he was the hot hand and then they would take him out.
8:46And then they would try something else. I'm a big believer in ride the hot hand until the defense stops it.
8:52Or alternate series versus, hey, you know, JK gets one series.
8:55He's doing really well. And then now he gets pulled off.
8:58Next series, RJ comes in. Like the Broncos, when they did that, when it was a series to series versus every other
9:04play, taking a guy off, putting another guy back in.
9:07There was a little bit of a better volume in the run game.
9:11I think there are some great examples of Dallas Cowboys game last year.
9:14Monday night football against the Cincinnati Bagels. Granted, both of those defenses that I just mentioned, some of the bottom tier in the NFL.
9:21But rhythm is super important in this. And now the other wrinkle, Jonah Coleman.
9:25How does he factor into the equation here? Where I think we saw Tyler Bidde play a lot of that third down two-minute role last year.
9:32That's where Jonah's going to come in. I think third down, you need a goal line back.
9:37You need something in the two-minute. Jonah's going to be there because he's proven in the pass protection department.
9:42And I'd say despite his size, he's deceptively explosive in between in short bursts.
9:46He's going to be a little bit of a difference maker, I feel, in this running back room.
9:51But it's all going to start with JK. JK is going to be the energizer bunny to the Broncos run game.
9:57So interesting points there, right? We talked about Coleman just now.
10:00Obviously, you know, JK Dobbins. We talked about RJ Harvey.
10:03You know, I still have a weird love for Jaleel McLaughlin.
10:06Me too. Maybe I'm on, you know, a level I shouldn't be with him.
10:09But looking at this as a whole, right, these four running backs, even if we call it three running backs, like what do you expect?
10:16What are their roles each year? And how do you even get these guys' touches?
10:21Like what's a perfect world in this backfield? Yeah, that's a $6 million question, right?
10:25Sure. And I'm with you. I'm with you on Jaleel McLaughlin.
10:28Jaleel bulked up this offseason. He added muscle mass so he could evolve a little bit more in his game.
10:33But, I mean, for a guy who's got a 4.8 yard per carry career average on 200 plus carries throughout his career,
10:39there's something to be said about him being a little bit of a wild card here.
10:44But to your point here, let's say the Broncos, I think they'll carry four on their 53.
10:49But, you know, you're not going to have probably four guys active on your game day roster.
10:53Sure. But if, let's say it is J.K., R.J., and Jonah as your three guys, I mean, if we're talking about maybe
10:59splitting the carries, what that's going to look like, I think that the Broncos will have a little bit more balance in
11:05the run-pass department with Davis Webb, whereas if the run game wasn't working for Sean, he would kind of go away from it, and it was just pass-heavy.
11:13I mean, there were times, there was like a five- or six-game stretch.
11:17We're sitting there. Quarterbacks got 16 passing attempts in the first half.
11:20They've only ran the ball four times. It was like, that's problematic.
11:23I don't think it's going to be like that with Davis Webb, knock on wood.
11:28Hopefully that's the case. But let's say, ideally, you have these three backs.
11:31I think very much you go, maybe for J.K., it's 15 overall touches in a game, right?
11:36R.J., maybe 10, and then Jonah, five, I think, at that point.
11:39But, I mean, I would kind of like to see it to where, okay, 17, 18 for J.K.
11:44Maybe you get to 11 to 12 for R.J., and then you have maybe 10 total touches, not necessarily carries, but 10
11:50touches for a guy like Jonah in a perfect world.
11:53And I understand the flow of the game. It's never going to be like that.
11:57But I think the Broncos can make it work if they develop a strategy that works for them in terms of the rotation situation.
12:04And even going back to what I said, riding the hot hand when it matters, that's going to be the approach to

12:59Makes perfect sense. I think what was really interesting to me and just, you know, scurrying off-season reports, and I can't remember
13:05for the life of me who actually initially said this, but it was something about, you know, RJ potentially being the odd man out.
13:12After Coleman coming in. And it doesn't sound like that's viable at all.
13:15But it was just, it was such an interesting take.
13:18I was like, I just don't get how the coaching staff stays the same, obviously, or at least John Payton there, and you just cast a guy away.
13:26So it's nice to hear that you expect him to have that kind of role, and we don't have to worry about that.
13:32Yeah. Look, the offseason, it drives me nuts with some of the stuff that gets created out of thin air.
13:38Like, you know, I could say this. I think if we look at RJ Harvey's game, defenses, they knew when RJ was
13:44in, the number one thing that they wanted to do was prevent him from getting to the outside because of his speed and explosiveness.
13:50So, you know, defenses, the ends or the outside guys, they'd play a little bit wider, right?
13:55And they wouldn't necessarily crash too much inside because their idea was preserving.
13:59The Broncos also tried implementing the outside zone scheme last offseason, and talking to players, it was tough.
14:04It was very hard because they just added that wrinkle into the mix.
14:07I mean, they're primarily a zone-blocking scheme there, but I think they want to get back to just becoming a bully ball.
14:13You know, you got Quinn Myers. You got Garrett Bowles.
14:16Find a way to just physically impose your will against different defenses.
14:20And, of course, you have to figure out how to counter some of the best pass rushes that you're going to be facing this year, including week three.
14:27Miles Garrett and the Rams. We'll see if Aaron Donald is back with that team at some point this offseason.
14:33But for Denver specifically, it was, hey, when RJ was in, like, they have roles.
14:37They have archetypes. Like, JK, your primary ball carrier.
14:40RJ, he can run the football, but he's going to be primarily your weapon out of the backfield.
14:45And 12 total touchdowns for him last season kind of paints that picture.
14:48When JK went down, RJ really struggled in the run game.
14:51And it's because defenses, they're loaded in the box because they're like, hey, you know, he's a young guy.
14:56We're going to protect the outside from ever, you know, him blowing that up.
15:00But we're going to make everything difficult. We want the Broncos to beat us through the air in the passing.
15:06Luckily, Bo Nix was a dog last season there.
15:08But that has to change a little bit. And I think if the Broncos, and this is where Jalen Waddell comes into
15:14the whole entire equation, a player like Jalen is going to pull an extra defender out of the box maybe for JK, for RJ.
15:21Well, now if defenses focus their attention on him, okay.
15:24Well, maybe in a passing down situation, now RJ is open up a little bit more in some one-on-ones against some slower linebackers.
15:30And you can use him in that regard. I mean, RJ was – he took a massive step last year, even if
15:36his run game numbers didn't necessarily suggest that. Well, I think it was 3.2 or 3.4 yards per carry for him.
15:42It was a struggle. But, man, he was a weapon in the passing game.
15:46He's dynamic. He makes clutch plays when you need to.
15:49And he was a rookie. And he had to absorb a lot more on his plate after JK went down.
15:54That's an absolutely fair point. You know, I feel like – and I don't know what it is, but players that play
16:00with Sean Payton, you always feel like they've been in the league for 10 years for some reason.
16:05So, it's interesting you say that. And, you know, you did allude to Jalen Waddell.
16:10And I think we just dive into this passing game because it is ultra interesting.
16:14And to the point where when I was putting this together, I was like, we had to break this into multiple questions.
16:20Just too many guys in this room that have potential roles.
16:23And it got really interesting. So, obviously, they bring in Waddell.
16:26You know, you still have Quotland Sutton there who has done pretty strong – or had some pretty strong seasons with Bo Nix.
16:32You know, I'm curious your take on how you expect them to coexist.
16:36You know, does Sutton's role change at all? And then, you know, do we expect Waddell to just take that lead in
16:42targets or do you still expect it to, you know, end up being Quotland at the end of the day?
16:48Yeah, it's a great question. No, it's a great question here because that's what people have been trying to figure out.
16:53You know, like I think everyone gets so caught up in the titles, right?
16:57Wide receiver one, wide receiver two. Sean Payton doesn't believe in any of that stuff.
17:01He doesn't like it. But his receivers inside of this offense, his demand is that they're not just – this guy's not just an X.
17:08He's got to play slot. He's got to be able to play on the other outside position.
17:13They want to move guys around because they really want to be able to dictate certain matchups.
17:18Like when they're game planning, we want to get Quotland against this guy.
17:21How do we do it? We want to get, you know, now Jalen against this guy.
17:26How do we do it? They're going to do that.
17:29Now here's what Jalen – like in key passing down situations last year, third down, Cortland Sutton, he's seeing bracket coverage.
17:34He's seeing a corner who's usually playing. They'll kind of show that cover two look where the corner will be outside leverage of him.
17:41He'll be playing press or he'll just kind of be sinking underneath.
17:44And then you have a safety over the top.
17:47That way, you know, corner can play underneath. Safety can climb over the top.
17:51And at times, they're also maybe even spying a linebacker backside because they love to run Quotland on dagger concepts, in breaking routes.
17:57And so they like to cheat that extra guy over.
18:00And so that's where Troy Franklin saw an increase in overall targets because teams are taking away Quotland there.
18:05And then teams start to focus on Troy a little bit.
18:08So now Jalen comes in. And now it's going to force defenses.
18:12Who do you want to focus your attention on?
18:14Well, you focus it on Quotland. Okay, now you've got Jalen who can win in the open space.
18:19You want to focus on Jalen. Well, now Quotland might get more one-on-ones where we know, hey, he's one of the better
18:25contested jump ball situation guys in the league. So it is kind of a pick your poison.
18:30And then you factor in guys like Troy. You factor in Pat Bryant, Marvin Mims.
18:34I call this room five guys because I think Denver's going to carry five on the 53.
18:39Expensive but high quality guys there, especially with you look at the price tag for Quotland and Jalen next year for Denver.
18:45It's going to be $27, $28 million apiece for those guys next year that'll have to get restructured.
18:50And then you've got your other guys that just, you know, they have their roles and their jobs.
18:55So I do think it's going to open up a lot more opportunities.
18:58These guys are going to coexist well together because of their skill sets.
19:02And obviously for both of those guys being in that category alongside what was it, Jackson Smith and Jigba, Puk and Akua
19:08last year of having explosive plays of 20-plus yards downfield.
19:11I'm excited to see what this looks like here because defenses, you can't, I mean, you can disguise as much as you want.
19:17Only at the end of the day, you have to figure out who strikes the most fear in you and how do
19:23you allocate your coverage resources to stop in that primarily.
19:26And that's where these other guys are going to have to step up to.
19:30Well, and you've seen it too. Like let's look at last year in Dallas with Pickens and Lamb.
19:35You know what I mean? That just, if you're a defense, what do you do?
19:39So it's going to be interesting to see that aspect of it, but you brought up a very good point in that
19:45you also have Bryant and Franklin behind them, which in Dallas, they didn't have that kind of skill behind Pickens and Lamb.
19:51So I'm really interested to get your take on these two guys.
19:55You know, what you expect this year, you know, Franklin kind of moved in that wide receiver two slash three role.
20:01I again, putting numbers on things, you know, but what do you expect out of these two guys this year?
20:06Is it just, is it going to just be a crowded mess in Denver or are these guys have specific roles that
20:12you think they're going to play into? I'm just curious.
20:15Yeah, I think they're going to have specific roles.
20:18I think the top two guys that are really going to never leave the field, I think it's going to be Cortland and Jalen, right?
20:24So it's, I think between, between Pat Bryant, between Troy Franklin and Marvin Mims, then you're going to see just a rotation of guys.
20:31And it may be more matchup specific based on who they're going against, what they like.
20:36But I'm, I'm really like Pat Bryant as that option kind of behind Jalen Waddle, Troy Franklin, kind of this move around piece.
20:42Like they're not necessarily fitting them all. Like you're not, you're not trying to have Pat Bryant be who Jalen Waddle is.
20:48It's saying, Hey, what does Pat Bryant do really well?
20:51Well, number one, he blocks his tail off. Number two, he's got really good size.
20:55A lot of people were critiquing the Broncos for taking him because of his 40 yard dash time.
21:00And what he's proven on tape is that 40 yard dash time really doesn't matter because this is a guy who knows
21:06how to find, create separation by being a really good route runner, by recognizing man versus zone and knowing where he needs to be.
21:13And he's got really good hands. So there's that.
21:15And then Troy, Troy's got the, the speed threat, the deep fields, the deep field speed threat that, you know, you can't
21:21have to worry about, but he's a little bit taller.
21:24He's taller than Jalen Waddle, but might be just as fast or close to being as fast as Jalen.
21:29And he's bigger than Marvin Mims, but has very similar speed to Marvin.
21:33So these two guys are the wild cards here.
21:35I do think, and obviously with Marvin entering his last year, I don't know what his role is going to be because
21:42the Broncos, since Marvin is coming to the league, they haven't found a way to properly utilize him in terms of touches.
21:48He'll have what there's a time where he was just averaging what 15 snaps per game.
21:52It's like, that's not enough. You got to get a more.
21:55So that's the big mystery right now. So right now it kind of factors into Pat Bryant, Troy Franklin, these two guys,
22:01I think, especially if defense is really focused just on Cortland and Jalen, there's going to be a lot of pressure on those guys to make plays.
22:09And so far they've proven that they can. I just think you want to look for a little bit more consistency in terms of drops from those guys.
22:16Pat though, very reliable handed. I think three drops for him last season, Troy four drops last year, which was a drop
22:23off from what he had in his rookie season.
22:25So there's a lot of excitement about this room in particular, and they're continuing to grow.
22:29They've, you know, Pat Bryant's going into year two in the system.
22:33Troy Franklin's going into year three and the expectations jump up a little bit more for them.
22:38I mean, super interesting, right? Just the depth of this.
22:40And, you know, we, we started talking about Mims.
22:43So I popped them up here. I think we'd be awesome to just finish the thoughts on what, if Marvin Mims is
22:49playing a role in this offense, what do you feel is the best utilization of him specifically in the offense?
22:54I know in the return game and all that, you know, but if he's, if he's on the field as a wide receiver, is it a gadget specific?
23:02Is it what's, what's Mims best outcome in 2026, I guess?
23:05Well, it just seems like right now they've kind of used him as a gadget guy.
23:10I think he could be more. And the reason I say that is let's go back to the Buffalo bills playoff game.
23:16The Broncos, they lose Pat Bryant after the first drive.
23:19He has three catches to open up that opening drive.
23:21They lose him to concussion protocol. And even he even said, like, I didn't have a concussion that game, but because he
23:27had one previously several weeks before it was out of his hands, especially independent people, which I think that's so important for
23:34teams to have, especially in today's NFL. So Pat was kind of taken out of that game.
23:38Troy Franklin on Frank Crum, the offensive lineman on his touchdown play.
23:42Frank, uh, Troy pulls his hamstring and he's out of the game.
23:45So the Broncos, they lose two of their key guys.
23:48And now for the rest of the game, it's Cortland Sutton, Marvin Mims, little Jordan Humphrey as your top, as your only receivers.
23:54And we saw Marvin, Marvin's clutch. He ran a nice double move to obviously set up the, uh, you know, the touchdown
24:00that gave the Broncos the lead there, um, at, you know, toward the end.
24:04And then he drew obviously the pass interference call and over time to set up will let's game winner Marvin showcase.
24:10I think in that moment, you can do a lot of things with him.
24:14If you use him, you don't want to run into all of them.
24:17Just because injuries, here's where we put Marvin in.
24:20I think that there is maybe some belief in that.
24:23And this is where we don't know yet, right?
24:25It's the mystery with Davis Webb. Maybe that changes.
24:28Maybe Marvin has a little bit more of a role in comparison to Pat Bryant and to Troy Franklin.
24:33It's hard to imagine that right now based on what we've seen, but maybe that is going to be the case.
24:39So for me, Marvin is more than just a gadget player, but I think, you know, if that's what you're going to
24:45use him as in a Superbowl window. And if there's a belief that you're not going to bring him back, which right
24:51now, no contract talks have started for him. And he's entering the last year of his deal.
24:56It makes things very interesting. Maybe they're going to use whatever they can out of him this year.
25:01And then because maybe they feel like they're going to price themselves out, but then they're going to be losing an all pro returner as well.
25:08So Marvin Mims is arguably the biggest mystery right now with how the Broncos will use him here in 2026.
25:13I mean, that just ties into everything. Sean Payton, right?
25:16I feel like he is the man, the coach of mystery, whether it's coach speak or whatever.
25:21You just got to read between the lines a lot with the guy.
25:24All right, let's go to the tight end room because I think this is ultra interesting, right?
25:29Evan Ingram comes back. He was coming in last year.
25:32I think I've heard more than any person needs to that, you know, the Joker role of Evan Ingram.
25:37I'm sure you're probably sick of it too. You know, what, how do we get Evan Ingram going in this offense?
25:43You know, you still have Trump in there. You got Lucas Kroll still hanging around.
25:47You had a loner who was getting hype early this off season.
25:51And then you go out and get jolly in the fifth round.
25:54I know that's a ton of names to talk about, but I feel like we got to talk about each one and
26:00kind of where you see them standing on this team.
26:03Yeah. I mean, I think it's going to go to role archetypes, right?
26:06Like Adam Troutman is going to be your traditional inline wide blocking tight end.
26:10I think they need to use Troutman more on the passing game.
26:14If he's going to have the most snaps, I think what?
26:17600 snaps. I think offensively 500, 600 snaps for him last season and only 23 targets.
26:21That's not enough. 20 catches on 23 targets is pretty good.
26:24But I think Adam Troutman is very underrated as a receiver.
26:27He's not going to be a burner. He's not going to, you know, you know, blow past the defense, but he can
26:33be a consistent, reliable pass catching option for you.
26:36If you feature him right now, if you go back and you watch the tape, he's more of this guy.
26:41He's in, he's blocking, blocking. He's a check release guy.
26:44He's never the primary target. And I think at times that has to change, especially with Jay Lamado coming in.
26:50It might open up more opportunities for the tight end.
26:52But to your point about Evan Ingram here, Evan played a career low in snaps last year.
26:57I believe it was 42%. The lowest of his career on any year where he was not dealing with an injury.
27:03And it's crazy because at one point he had the volume in Jacksonville where I believe he had, what was it?
27:09He was knocking on the door of the most catches by a tight end.
27:13It was insane. Yeah. He was getting fed. And part of me is looking at it.
27:17It's like, okay, so what, what happened in Denver?
27:20I mean, I was puzzled. I think Evan himself was puzzled though.
27:23I'll say this. Evan's a consummate pro. We were in the locker room after games.
27:27We're in a locker room throughout the week. Evan never pouted or made it seem like he was mad.
27:32Even if he was mad, even if he had every right to be mad for how he was being used, but he was not brought.
27:39He was not used in the way that the Broncos pitched him necessarily.
27:43Now here's where Davis web comes in as the wild card right now, as Davis is the play color, their former teammates.
27:49A big reason Evan came to Denver was because of Davis and he's been on the record of saying that.
27:54So I imagine, and what we've seen early on in OTAs and mandatory mini camp is that Evan was being used quite
28:01a bit in the passing game in terms of targets.
28:03It's a lot more than we saw in the off season at this juncture last year.
28:08So the hope was that, Hey, Evan Ingram is going to be used more.
28:12He's that F type move around tight end. But I think the thing is the Broncos got too comfortable in saying, okay,
28:18Hey, when our personnel is on the field, defense is no, we're doing what Adam Trotman's on the field.
28:23I mean, we know primarily it's going to be, you know, a run or he's just going to be a blocker.
28:29We don't have to worry about him in the passing game as much when Evan's in the game.
28:34Everyone's like, Hey, they're going to throw the ball because Evan Ingram is in the game.
28:38So it was almost kind of keying it got to be able to run the ball on Evans in there.
28:44You know, and Evan's got a willingness. Like that's the thing.
28:47He may not be the best blocker, but he's got a willingness to block.
28:51It's just about getting the right angles. So I think he's going to be used more.
28:55And then you mentioned Justin Jolie is going to be behind Evan Ingram as that F type move around tight end.
29:01You know, you go and you get Dallin Bentley as a seventh round option there.
29:05He projects to be an inline Y guy. Nate Adkins is kind of the hybrid can play inline can play that F type position.
29:12And then you have Lucas Kroll, as you mentioned, who's been on this team for, you know, the last couple of seasons, Sean Payton has come over.
29:19It's going to be hard for him to make the active roster.
29:23And then you've got Caleb Lohner, the project who, you know, he missed OTAs and mini camp after having a, you know,
29:29lower body procedure should be good to go here for the start of training camp here in the next week or so.
29:35But the challenge with Lohner is that Dallin Bentley, his Utah counterpart, it's got far more experience, far more.
29:40You know, I'd say we, there's more of a proven sample size with him.
29:44So there's going to be competition for who gets that backup job right behind Adam Troutman as an inline guy.
29:50And that's going to be between, I think, Lucas Kroll, Dallin Bentley, and I'd obviously go to the lengths of saying Nate Adkins as well for that.
29:57This is a very interesting room. And it has, this position room right here, it cannot be the weakest link going into 2026.
30:03I mean, do you, I just have to talk about it because he's the rookie, obviously, Joel, like, do you see him getting involved at all this season?
30:11Or is this a Sean Payton and letting him develop, just kind of got to sit on this guy?
30:16Like it doesn't, it sounds like he might not even get enough opportunity given the size of this room to showcase what
30:23he could do, even if he was able. Yeah, that's, that's a great question, right?
30:27Because if Evan's going to be the premier F type guy, okay, how do you see a role for a guy like Justin Joel?
30:33I think Denver can get creative. Honestly, I think when they, there's times where they came out and, you know, two, two back, three back pistol, right?
30:41And they had maybe the one tight end up as one of those blockers right next to Bo Nix running back and then another running back behind them.
30:49I think you could get creative because you could have, let's say Bo Nix, you're in the pistol.
30:54You've got any of the running backs we've talked about behind Bo.
30:57And let's say you got Evan Ingram on one side, Justin Jolie on the other.
31:01Well, you know, Evan could be a legit past catching threat out.
31:04You can use him to isolate maybe a matchup against an off ball linebacker.
31:08Justin Jolie, he's got this, this willingness and this good size to him to be a blocker, probably a better blocker than
31:14Ingram will be at this point, but has good athleticism, good grip, good hands, reliability in that department.
31:19Denver could get creative with these guys, but I do think that we're probably going to see a stretch of games throughout
31:25this upcoming season where Jolie will probably be a game day inactive unless he really stands out on special teams.
31:31But if he has a strong preseason and he's being used in a way and he's making plays, he's going to find
31:37a way to play alongside Evan early on. But we have to see that translate here in the preseason.
31:42This, this is a, like I said, I'm excited about the rookie.
31:46I'm excited about Dallin Bentley as well. Yeah, it sounds like I'm glad you brought up that name.
31:51I think it's awesome that, you know, it's another name for people to keep on their radar and just see how this
31:57room evolves through training camp and into preseason. So definitely appreciate that information.
32:00Cody, let's wrap it up with just everyone. You talking about what you're working on, where you work, how you work, all the good stuff.

32:53So I believe so veterans report on the 28th.
32:56I believe it's either that day or it's the 29th is when we'll have access to practice rookies report on, I think the 22nd of July.
33:03We won't get access to that as they kind of go through the whole process of getting that going.
33:08But yeah, it's here and it's a new team facility, brand new team facility.
33:12So we're excited to get our first look at that as well.
