Mendoza's garbage-time debut showed promise but he remains backup to Cousins

No. 1 pick Fernando Mendoza made his NFL debut in Week 5 garbage time against New England with the Raiders down 45-17 with about six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. He completed 6 of 8 passes for 48 yards and came up one yard short on a fourth-down scramble. Head coach Klint Kubiak praised his performance: "[Fernando] was prepared, he played fast, he got through his progressions quickly, he knew his hot issues. It was a solid start for him." Kubiak confirmed Mendoza will remain the backup and be ready if called upon.
