Pompei sees McCarthy's talent but prefers Winston now given Giants' division lead and playoff positioning.

Dan Pompei acknowledges McCarthy has talent worth developing and it hasn't always looked pretty, but suggests the timing of a start is questionable given the Giants are 3-2-1 and in first place in the NFC East; they can win the division if their quarterback doesn't lose it for them. Sticking with Winston for now is probably the smart move, but if Winston has more games like the Saints loss, Harbaugh can make a change to develop McCarthy.
