if you were to start Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase, instead, things change. If Chase goes off for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns, it's very likely that Joe Burrow had a great game, too (you'd expect 200 passing yards and 3 touchdowns at a minimum). If Burrow finishes with 120 passing yards and no scores, Chase likely didn't have a very good week.

Burrow-Chase pairing increases team variance through positive serial correlation.

Burrow paired with Ja'Marr Chase (same team) creates high positive serial correlation; if Chase has a 200-yard, 3-TD game, Burrow likely posted at least 200 passing yards and 3 TDs. Starting a QB and WR from the same team increases team variance. Conversely, if Burrow finishes with 120 passing yards and no scores, Chase likely did not have a good week.
