McCarthy has been outplayed by Carson Wentz this preseason. Wentz also arguably put together a better five-game stretch as the Vikings' starter in 2025 between Weeks 3-7 while McCarthy was sidelined with a high-ankle sprain than McCarthy did across his 10 starts over the course of the campaign. The competition for the backup role is effectively McCarthy against himself—the good version versus the bad version—rather than a direct duel with Wentz, as the Vikings have indicated they don't think Wentz needs significant work.
