If there was a loser on the offensive side of the ball, it was third-string running back Tahj Brooks. He finished with four carries for 11 yards and a catch for 8, but had a pair of drops.

Saturday was Brooks' audition as the second-year back, and he was efficient in a modest workload: 16 yards on three carries and two catches for 20 yards, including a 19-yard catch-and-run on a scoring drive. He is also the leading candidate for the vacant punt-protector job. However, in the preseason opener against Detroit, Brooks was a loser on the offensive side of the ball, finishing with four carries for 11 yards and a catch for 8, with a pair of drops including an ugly one that bounced right off his hands on a slant that would have gone for a long gain. Brooks has not seriously pushed Perine for the No. 2 running back job and is not in line for a major snap increase after playing just 47 snaps on offense last season.
