A.J. Brown holds informal leadership role, mentoring younger Patriots with tough-love approach

Wide receiver A.J. Brown will hold a leadership role within the Patriots this season despite not being voted a captain. His leadership style was shaped by tough love mentoring from head coach Mike Vrabel during their time together with the Tennessee Titans. Brown now uses his own experience to mentor younger teammates like outside linebacker Gabe Jacas, telling him "I went and had a couple words with Gabe to keep him locked in." Vrabel noted Brown's maturity development: "The maturity has been probably what I have appreciated seeing on a daily basis... the way that he communicates and where he's at in the training room, just seeing his daily routine and the way that he talks to the young receivers or the way that he communicates with Todd [Downing], Josh [McDaniels] or the quarterback."
