McCarthy couldn't beat out Wentz for backup role; first-rounder turned clipboard holder.

McCarthy was a former No. 10 overall pick who became a clipboard holder in Minnesota after failing to fend off Carson Wentz for the primary backup role during training camp. Christian Gonzalez describes this as 'a bad look all around' for a first-rounder. McCarthy's rough preseason performance meant it took an injury to a starting QB (Jaxson Dart) to move the needle on his trade value.
