NFL.com News on J.J. McCarthy

Gonzalez not optimistic McCarthy can turn career around; he's a backup option.

Christian Gonzalez is not optimistic that McCarthy can turn his career around with the Giants. McCarthy's poor play and injury history left Minnesota with no good options, and the Vikings couldn't afford to let the 23-year-old develop on his terms in a win-now mode. Gonzalez notes that it's a serious question whether John Harbaugh will give Jameis Winston enough leash for a 15-game run, suggesting McCarthy is merely an alternative if Winston crumbles rather than a solution.
