Kaepernick was benched in favor of Blaine Gabbert in 2016 under Chip Kelly, though Kaepernick was still rehabbing from injury at the time. Reports suggest injury guarantees on his contract and subsequent restructuring to remove those guarantees were the real reason he stayed off the field, per Kaepernick's own speculation.
