0:50Let's talk Brendan Soresby, the quarterback out of Cincinnati, who now has entered the supplemental draft.
0:55The supplemental draft, Hayden, we've had a pick in since the 2019 summer.
0:58So when you go back and watch Soresby tape, what stands out the most?
1:02I think you got a very loose athlete. He's a plus athlete.
1:06There's a couple times as a scrambler where he would take off and run.
1:10I also notice his sack production is really, really outlier strong.
1:13And if you go back and look at the reasons why there's a lot of play action in the offense, like absurd,
1:19it's like 50% of his snaps are play action.
1:21But also he's got the athletic traits to kind of escape some sacks out there, whether that's with his legs.
1:27He's also got some size to him as well.
1:29So there's a, there's a really good chart out there.
1:32Just looking at a scramble rate versus his sack rate.
1:35That's the promising stuff. His arm talent in terms of throwing at different angles on the run.
1:39I think that's pretty good. I think he's a toolsy ish prospect.
1:43This is not Josh Allen athleticism. I think that the arm talent in terms of accuracy, arm strength, I think is more average than anything.
1:50Ultimately, I think I would be looking at a day two selection just based off of the film here, based off the stats that we'll get to here.
1:57So I think a pretty fun prospect in general, you definitely have some questions the more you dig into it though.
2:03So in this video, we do want to talk about his individual talent, what he does well, some of his weaknesses, diving
2:09into some underlying numbers on top of that. I think go through what's the realistic outcome for him in this supplemental draft,
2:15where might he be taken and compare that to maybe some prospects that were in the 2026 NFL draft and where they were selected.
2:22So you hit in a lot of what I wanted to lead off with here with Soresby in that just seven turnover
2:28worthy plays this past year, charted by PFF and just seven sacks taken.
2:32That's all on 400 drop backs. And you would think just looking at those numbers that you'd then be watching a very tentative, safe passer.
2:39Like that's not the case at all. When you're watching Brendan Soresby, the dude just wants to throw from all different platforms
2:45with a bunch of different trajectories on his throws.
2:47And he does really want to throw down the field.
2:50In fact, I mean, you know, about 52% of his passes were anywhere from behind the line of scrimmage of zero to
2:56nine yards, but then he really wanted to attack 20 plus yards down the field.
3:00He had 23 completions on those for 955 yards, eight touchdowns, including 21 big time throws.
3:05So again, 21 big time throws, 20 plus yards down the field.
3:08So in that case, he's kind of like a get out of your seat.
3:12This is a really fun player when he does want to create explosives out there.
3:16Yeah, he's a really fun quarterback to watch on them because his mechanics on every single rep, it's almost like a snowflake.
3:22Every single one is different, whether it's the follow through, it's a back pedal throwing from like, he's pretty much like parallel
3:28with the sideline on some of them. Sometimes then he's parallel to the line of scrimmage.
3:33It's all over the place. And I think that lack of consistency ultimately kind of hurt him with his accuracy where there
3:39were some, some of the most ridiculous touch passes.
3:41He releases the ball so much earlier than everyone else.
3:44Like he like really enjoys just kind of like uncle Rico throwing this ball way down the field, a lot of arc on it.
3:51And then when it goes right in the breadbatch, you're like, wow, that's what some of the best throws you will ever
3:57see because the ball is in the air for so long.
4:00But also when you're playing like that, it's so hard to be accurate all the time.
4:04So there was as many balls that were well short, like, like multiple yards short or well into the sideline as well.
4:10And I think if you just like took a screenshot of his follow through and the angle that he was throwing the
4:16ball from every single rep on these 20 plus yarders, you'd say, what the hell is going on here?
4:22And I think that loose mechanic stuff, while fun, ultimately hurt his ability to be consistent quarterback on some of these throws.
4:28Yeah. You hear the term textbook. He is the opposite of textbook because like you said, every single rep felt very different.
4:34Sometimes it works out though. Like he loves to throw on the move.
4:38There was this play against Bowling Green. It was play action from the left hash.
4:42He was rolling right a flick of the wrist.
4:44And I mean, a flick of the wrist and the ball is perfectly thrown 25 yards to the far sideline in stride on first and 10.
4:51And you're like, man, that placement is perfect. I want him to do that every single time.
4:56But then a quarterback who moves around this much makes me nervous.
4:59Like he doesn't want to sit there and read the full field out without moving left or right, which then cuts off,
5:05you know, certain reads and certain opportunities for him to hit open receivers in the timing and the rhythm of an offense.
5:12Then there are other times like in quick game where he can be very swift with it.
5:16And in fact, his arm angles and his movement kind of create these angles to check downs, to running backs, to tight
5:22ends that maybe other guys can get to how loose he is with the ball.
5:27It really reminded me of drew lock coming out of school and the style that he plays with like no holds barred.
5:33I'm just going to try this backyard football stuff and see how it goes.
5:37And again, I am stunned that it didn't end in more negative outcomes than it did.
5:41But at the same time, I can see how it does lead to more negative outcomes once he reaches the NFL.
5:47Yeah. So we see the same way as a passer.
5:50I think his arm strength is more average than anything.
5:52There was not that many plays where I thought he was like really lining up and firing the ball in there.
5:58And then sometimes when he did, the ball would kind of escape a little bit high from him.
6:03And I think that just goes back to the mechanics.
6:06Like if his mechanics were more sound as a, as a, as a passer, I think that we would see more talent kind of come out of there.
6:14He's just ridiculous throwing the ball on the run.
6:16Like he does have some of those like wow plays out there.
6:19I will say he can run right by a lot of guys, right?
6:23Like he is an impressive athlete running the ball just right.
6:26Like either in the scramble drill, uh, he can catch guys off by surprise.
6:30I do think that you should get him involved in the quarterback design game.
6:34I think that's where some people are doing the Jackson dart stuff.
6:37I think as a rusher, there's definitely some similarities between the two.
6:40I just think that Jackson darts ball placement was just way better.
6:44And his production was just way better than, uh, um, what we have here.
6:48So I wouldn't put them in the same tier of quarterbacks.
6:51I understand some of the, the, the comparisons based off of the rushing stuff, but I was just curious how, how good of a rusher is he?
6:58Cause I do think he's going to need to be one in order for him to get enough, enough, enough reps as
7:04an experienced quarterback to like round out some of the concerns that we have as a passer.
7:09That's the other stunner. When you go and watch his tape because he had 113, 105 and a hundred carries in each of the last three seasons.
7:16And this past year was easily the most productive at 580 yards and nine scores.
7:21And a lot of these scramblers that you see, they go East and West.
7:25His is a lot of North and South. And oftentimes it was when either there was a blitz or the, you know,
7:31linebackers just either again, we're rushing or we're, uh, voiding and evacuating their area.
7:34And as soon as he sees like the seas part between the guard center guard, he is putting his foot in the dirt and climbing up.
7:42And again, he's faster than the defenders think, and he's destroying their angles.
7:45And so maybe what should have been like a seven yard run turns into a 17 yard run, uh, that North and South stuff.
7:52I don't think you see as often again in the league because the coverages and the different styles that they play.
7:58So I think he's going to have to attack it a bit differently because I don't know if you saw the same
8:04thing, but so often it was like through the heart of the pocket, which is cool to see.
8:09But again, a lot of the scrambles that we see from the best athletes and the best scramblers in the league, those
8:15are more like extended plays versus, Oh, this is wide open.
8:18I'm just going to kind of do like the one to turn down and then go, and I'm going to create yards there.
8:24Yeah. I see the same way. I think, I think he's going to be an above average, you know, scrambler, but nothing
8:30going to be like, you know, obviously the top guys in the league.
8:34So it's like a nice thing to have in his back pocket.
8:37I don't think it's like enough for him to say he's a really toolsy quarterback that should go around one.
8:43Ultimately, I think I would take a chance on them like in the second ish round.
8:47I don't, I would need to obviously interview him and get to the bottom of this because he placed 9,000 bets and
8:53the common person betting 9,000 bets is a lot.
8:56Somebody that's told you absolutely cannot do this for years and years and years and years.
9:00And then you still do it 9,000 times. That is very much concerning to me.
9:05So you'd have to get to the bottom of that.
9:07I think just based off as the overall talent, how important quarterback is a second or third round pick is probably the range.
9:14So some of the comps that I had, Kenny Pickett played this kind of game who in the first round out didn't go out work.
9:21Well, Hendon hooker was someone that popped up very statistically similar.
9:24A lot of play action, kind of a weird offense.
9:26That's somebody else. The names are very coming into the league.
9:29Hendon hooker did. Yes. Yes. And we haven't seen much Hendon hooker.
9:33I think true lock in terms of a passer, I think makes sense.
9:36Spencer Rattler. There's a little bit to, to this game as well.
9:40So yeah, I think a second round pick most second round quarterbacks, it does not turn out.
9:44And I think most likely scenario, Brennan Swordsby does not turn out, but we have had some Derek Carr S type of guys that eventually get it done.
9:52So I think I would not be surprised if he was a third round pick because of the question marks.
9:58And then some teams late in the second round, we can get to them could take a dart.
10:03I just do not agree that he would have been a first round pick in the draft.
10:07Like that just makes no sense. Yeah. I'll dive into that a little bit more.
10:12You mentioned third round like Carson Beck and drew Aller just went in the third round and he's, he's better on the field than those guys.
10:19Like he is. Yeah. That should be the absolute floor that we're talking about here for just an on-field standpoint.
10:24Now, what you also brought up is that there are some mentions that he has first round ability, that he has first round talent to me.
10:31And maybe this is an oversimplification. If he had first round talent, he would just would have declared for the 2026 NFL draft.
10:38And I understand that there are more reasons to stay in college now than there have been previously, but there's way more
10:44competition for quarterback in the 2027 draft. And there would have been this past one after Fernando Mendoza.
10:49I mean, it would have just been Ty Simpson.
10:51If you really did have locked in first round ability.
10:54I think he's a really fun player. He has obvious areas where he wins as we outlined, but again, I don't know
11:00if we talked about enough of like the obvious areas that he has flaws.
11:04I mean, the fall away fade away throws where it can turn what should be a great design and a good completion
11:10because he had, you know, a wide receiver that was drafted and another like freakazoid six, five guy.
11:15That was one of the greatest athletes that we've seen in this draft class.
11:19And that means something at the college level. And too often he turned them, their wins into like 50, 50 situations where
11:25they had to come up with big time place.
11:28And then other than the Kansas game, I thought he was really suspect over the middle and he got away with it at times.
11:34Like there was this play against Nebraska where there was a little hook into a zone and he stares right at it and he doesn't throw it.
11:42And instead he scrambles for 12 yards. So it's a nice gain and it's a nice win.
11:47But again, I want him to rip those throws in kind of the second ish phase of the play.
11:52And he just was unwilling to do that. I felt over the middle of the field.
11:56And that extends to the intermediate portion to where, you know, it was 21% of his attempts, but it was easily his
12:02like least productive area throwing to the football this past season.
12:05Yeah. There's just not a lot of full field reads kind of going out there.
12:10A lot of this is kind of like the first half of the field and then just like take a shot down
12:16the field is kind of how the plays would kind of work out.
12:19And just real quick, I also didn't see a lot of small movements in confined space to reset and throw from the pocket.
12:26Yeah, I saw he is an athlete, but he once he uses that athleticism, it is to throw from awkward arm angle
12:32around the pressure or to totally escape it as a rusher versus I'm going to work in this confined situation and continue
12:38my reads and then make a play. And again, the design of the of the drawn up situation.
12:43The other thing, his interceptions and his like turnover worthy plays and stuff.
12:46It was too high shells and like he would just like throw it directly to the safety.
12:51There was a lot of times where some of his completions were also I was like an NFL safety puts his receiver
12:57into the hospital and there was almost like too many plays where he's like not fact checking what's going on with the safeties.
13:04And a lot of his big plays were like cover zero and stuff where there's no safeties to worry about.
13:09He can just throw the ball way up in the air and do that pretty well.
13:13But I thought a lot of his bad plays, it was like the same rep like throughout the entire season, which has me a little bit concerned.
13:21So yeah, I didn't throw many interceptions, but when he did, they were spectacularly stupid and they were like in tight moments
13:27when trailing that stood out to me too. And there are even other times when the ball got tipped at the line
13:33when there was a pass rush and he was about to throw it into a single covered safety who had a safety over the top.
13:40Yeah. And he got lucky that the ball got tipped at the line.
13:44I haven't firmly between Ty Simpson Carson back. So that's, that's a pretty wide, wide range.
13:48That's 13th overall to 65th overall. And we also could learn that teams get to the bottom of this, this betting stuff and his character.
13:55And they're like, I'm not going to take the chances on this.
13:58So like, I don't think there's a floor that exists with him.
14:02I think just his tape is a boom bust second or third rounder.
14:05We have a couple of these guys every single year.
14:08He, uh, I think if he had a huge season at Texas tech, I think there was a chance he could go
14:14round one, but that's like a lot of if then statements, you can't be like, right.
14:19If he had a great season, then he would have been a first round player.
14:23Like, I think that could have been possible, but that did not happen.
14:26Like he, how he was like 74th, 64th, 68th percentile, like all the advanced metrics compared to, uh, drafted quarterbacks.
14:32That's better than Ty Simpson's, uh, production, but it is not the typical automatic first round guy.
14:37Um, so like, I think the first round prospect stuff is definitely overstated.
14:40Can we get into who might select them? Like how many teams do you think might spend a third round pick on him?
14:47That list was longer than I was expecting it to be because how bad the quarterback twos are across the league.
14:52Like there's a lot of teams that do not have set in stone quarterback twos, the Packers, you know, the, the Panthers, the Buccaneers.
14:59Uh, so like there's a lot of those type of teams.
15:02And then you have what the four or five teams that are still looking for their franchise quarterback.
15:07I don't think that those teams, dolphins, Cardinals, Browns, uh, I don't think that they would be offering yet.
15:12The jets, I don't think they would say a second round pick because that's most likely to be a top 40 pick.
15:18I think that's a little bit rich for this type of profile.
15:22I do think it'd be more interesting. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Baker Mayfield's on expiring contract at 51st overall, the Philadelphia Eagles just doing the analytics of this.
15:29That can make some sense to me. And then you get into the third round and that's where I think the lions,
15:36you know, they took a chance on Hendon hooker in the third round.
15:39And like a lot of those teams begin to make more sense.
15:42So, uh, I think it's a pretty even range of teams that can take him.
15:47Like, I don't think there should be a clear cut favorite because I think a lot of teams are going to look
15:53at them as a developmental quarterback to not a franchise quarterback.
15:56And once we get past the top 40 or so picks, every team's on the table at that point.
16:01So I can see a lot of teams doing third round picks.
16:04Um, and then maybe a couple of late seconds, but then the late second thing, you don't know it's a late second.
16:10That that's the part of this, right? Because if you use and put in one of your selections, then that is lost in the 2027 NFL draft.
16:18And you know, there's more layers to this where I believe the league is now split up into like three different sections and it's all through email.
16:25It's kind of like blind bidding and all this type of stuff.
16:29But to me, that is why, you know, no team is going to spend a first round pick on this.
16:34Like that, that should be impossible. Like I know the jets have three first rounders, but it is your first round pick that is lost.
16:41And so I also get the idea that, Hey, a team that spends a second or third round pick on a quarterback,
16:47that doesn't mean they're locked into that and they can easily move off of them just the next off season.
16:53But I just don't think that this fits like the jets timeline in that way where they are more focused on the
16:592027 draft as a whole and losing out on a third or especially a second round pick then kind of changes why
17:05that they've accumulated all of these selections. So I don't think the Browns are going to do it.
17:10I don't think the jets are going to do it.
17:13And more so to me, it's more of the, the Packers, the, the bucks, the Eagles would be an interesting one because
17:19you know, they have Tanner McKee, but he's in a contract year.
17:22They just made the move for any Dalton. So that would make a very crowded 2026 quarterback room for them.
17:28And then on top of that, you know, when Terrell Pryor was suspended in college before joining the NFL in the supplemental
17:34draft, the NFL then added a suspension on top of that.
17:37So they do have the power to suspend him for four or five, six, however many games you want to watch source.
17:43He does enter the, I think the suspension is not going to matter because he's not going to be starting the first couple of games anyways.
17:50I would be surprised suspension or not. Um, I do think the risk of him being permanently suspended if he, you know,
17:56uh, like relapse with all this stuff like that, that's definitely on the table and should be accounted for.
18:02Um, he's going to be a backup this year no matter what.
18:05So I think we see it the same way.
18:07I do think that the teams that have three quarterbacks, it's just harder to make that work.
18:12Like it's not impossible, but the Browns have that the Cardinals.
18:15I'm not saying if these seem none of these quarterbacks are actually good, but they have three guys in a competition now.
18:21And it's a little bit harder for those teams to kind of get it done.
18:25So that's where I think it's, yeah, it's the Panthers.
18:28It's the dolphins in the third round, like those types of could Atlanta be a part of this too.
18:33Possibly. Yeah. One year deal. I think that would, would make some sense.
18:37Um, so yeah, I think, I think a lot of those teams would be the third round, which makes me, I'm kind
18:43of 50, 50, if it's going to be third round or second rounds at this point, uh, that's kind of the grades that he, that they've gotten.
18:51And I can see my fear is that everyone thinks, oh, he's going to go for a third rounder.
18:56So one team believes that they have to put in a second round or four.
19:00Yeah. I mean, I can totally see that being, you know, I mean, there's some really bad picks in the second round
19:06for, for quarterbacks and for other positions too. It's not just the quarterbacks too, but like, remember Kyle Trasko's in the second round to the Buccaneers.
19:13Like, do you think Jason Light's looking at Kyle Trasko's profile versus Sorsby and kind of think, Hey, maybe this is a chance worth taking.
19:20I think teams like the Bucs, when it's an expiring quarterback contract, getting Sorsby in early to kind of feel like, okay,
19:26is there a path where he can actually start in 2027?
19:29I think those are the type of teams that makes the most sense.
19:33So yeah, I don't have a good answer. I think it's pretty flat across who could do it.
19:38That does it. Hopefully that helped. He's an interesting watch.
19:41And, uh, hopefully that came through with our discussion here.
19:43Um, thank you all for tuning in the supplemental draft isn't until mid July.
19:47So there's a whole other month of conversation about this.
19:50And I know he has a pro day workout on like July 10th as well.
19:54So we'll get some eyes on that on top of it.
19:57So thank you all for watching, hit that subscribe button and we'll see in the next video.
