DK Metcalf

NegativeProjection7:00

At $32 million per year, DK Metcalf's target share is expected to decline in Pittsburgh. Matt Harmon notes that downfield efficiency concerns are significant—his returns are not nearly as good as 2-3 years ago, with inconsistent production and testing down the field. Harmon expresses concern about DK's efficiency decline and role fit, noting "you're just not seeing that level of efficiency and productivity from DK down the field" compared to 2-3 years ago. He worries the offense will be too truncated without a true vertical threat and doesn't see DK as comfortable in a "sacrificial X receiver" role despite his high salary, expecting "static X receiver stuff" given the offense's lack of dynamic motion. DK is characterized as "the most obviously highest upside, but most volatile player in the room," making target share difficult to project.

Michael Pittman

PositiveRole2:25

Matt Harmon identifies Pittman as a reliable layup receiver with consistent target share expectations. There is talk that Pittman may be used more in the slot than he was previously with Indianapolis; he and Bernard can both function as 50/50 slot/Z receivers while DK Metcalf is the clear X of the room. Pittman is described as a great fit for Aaron Rodgers' current stage of career as a quick-game option, fitting well with Mike McCarthy's West Coast scheme and 11 personnel usage, and is praised for his catch-point ability. Harmon specifically highlights Pittman as "especially" reliable among the Steelers' receiving options alongside Bernard as receivers "who are going to be in the right places at the right time," suggesting he'll maintain consistent target volume.

0:00Germaine Bernard goes to Pittsburgh in
0:02the middle of the third round this after
0:04reportedly Pittsburgh reportedly being
0:07on the phone with Mekhi Leven.
0:09They thought they were going to draft in
0:12the mid late first round, but eventually
0:14they get to wide receiver taking Alabama
0:17receiver Germaine Bernard. You called
0:19him a glue guy. He's going to try to
0:21glue up and try to add to this wide
0:23receiver room of DK Metcalf and Michael
0:26Pitman.
0:28>> Look at the release. There's your
0:29separation.
0:30>> Great route.
0:31>> Stutters and go gets by clean.
0:32>> That is unbelievable.
0:33>> May be the greatest catch I've ever
0:35seen.
0:39>> Mike McCarthy there, you just know they
0:43are going to run a ton of three wide
0:47receiver sets and shoot, why not? When
0:49you've got DK Metcalf, Michael Pitman
0:51and now Germaine Bernard, I would be
0:54surprised if they went two wide
0:56receivers to be honest with you. You got
0:58three guys out here, man. Like
1:00Again, I don't know if this is the It's
1:02not the best trio of wide receivers in
1:04the NFL, Matt, but golly, it's got to be
1:07the most physical three receiver set in
1:10the league. DK 6'4 230, Pitman 6'4 225,
1:14Bernard 6'1 206 out of the dang slot.
1:17Plus he likes to get after it. Come on,
1:19man. Like this is a crazy crazy
1:22physically strong wide receiver room.
1:26>> Yeah, a big receiver room going to block
1:28in the run game. They drafted an
1:30offensive lineman in the first round. I
1:31kind of
1:32I thought Steelers fans were a little
1:33too upset about the Mekhi. I know that
1:35like obviously sucks they were on the
1:36phone with him. They wanted to take him.
1:38Then this Eagles jumped him, but to end
1:40up with Maxie Efe Acho Jr.
1:41Really high upside as a starting tackle
1:44in the long term. Like continue to build
1:45that thing. And like yeah, come back on
1:46the second day and get yourself a solid
1:48receiver in Germaine Bernard. I don't
1:50know if he's like a home run player, but
1:52I certainly think he gets on base as a
1:53wide receiver for the Pittsburgh
1:55Steelers here. And you know, the
1:57Steelers obviously the guys they've
1:59drafted recently at the wide receiver
2:00position who have outkicked their ADPs,
2:02you know, or like their their draft
2:04positioning. The George Pickens is, the
2:06Deontay Johnson's, you know, even
2:08Martavis Bryant when he was on the
2:09field. It ends up going up in flames
2:12with those guys in the long term
2:14because, you know, just
2:16char- character like stuff, whatever.
2:18Jeremy Bernard is like the ultimate glue
2:20guy, like I said, you know, you you said
2:21that was my description of him. He's
2:23he's the glue glue glue guy, Jeremy
2:25Bernard. He's going to come in here,
2:26he's going to block, he's going to make
2:28plays the ball in his hands. He's kind
2:30of just like pretty good at everything,
2:31you know, as a route runner. His best
2:33stuff is definitely in the intermediate
2:34area. Outs, digs, dig routes especially,
2:37which
2:38you know, if Rodgers is the quarterback,
2:39we're not going to see a lot of those
2:40throws over the middle of the field, so
2:41that is definitely a concern. But, um he
2:43does kind of complete the room, for
2:45sure. Um I think him and and Pittman
2:48I've heard some talk that that they may
2:49may want to use Pittman more in the slot
2:51than they did previously with
2:53Indianapolis, but like Bernard and uh
2:55Pittman can both be kind of 50/50 slot Z
2:57receivers while DK is the clear X of the
3:00room. So, I like that a lot. Again, they
3:03got a lot of like small speedster
3:05receivers, you know, Roman Wilson,
3:07Calvin Austin. And Austin was solid,
3:09Roman Wilson's been
3:11a non-factor so far. I like them getting
3:13a big physical guy in here who can bring
3:15something both after the catch. Like
3:17he's not going to break a ton of
3:18tackles, but he's decisive with the ball
3:20in his hands. Solid hands at the catch
3:22point. Uh and he can play all three
3:24receiver positions, too. He moved around
3:25the field, played basically everywhere
3:27like 30% of his ti- his snaps in his RP
3:30sample. Um so, yes, definitely somebody
3:32that I think is is a good glue guy,
3:33going to kind of bring the room together
3:35and be like a chain-moving complementary
3:37piece to start his career, and then
3:39we'll see
3:40like how he grows and evolves because I
3:43do think he brings a lot of um
3:45a lot of solid ability here. And again,
3:48the
3:48the stuff with the ball in his hands,
3:49went down on first contact on um 49 or
3:52he was in space on 49% of his uh sampled
3:54catches, went down on first contact just
3:5640% of the time. So, it's a lot of like
3:59steady move the chains type of stuff for
4:01him. I think he could be a fan favorite
4:03as like a first down machine.
4:05>> I mean, can you imagine this that trio
4:08with Darnell Washington out there tight
4:10end? I mean, this is just
4:12this is a big offense, man. Broderick
4:15Jones is massive, you know, like golly,
4:18this is this is a big big offense. It
4:22really makes me feel like
4:24that they're going to try to run this
4:26football. Remember they added Rico
4:28Dowdle as well. I'm still holding a
4:29candle out here for Caleb Johnson. I
4:31loved him out of Iowa.
4:33I and he ended up just getting, you
4:35know, Arthur Smith.
4:37But, I'm still holding a candle. I think
4:39he can actually be a good player. So,
4:40we'll see
4:41we'll see where he ends up what he ends
4:43up doing here for Pittsburgh as well,
4:45but
4:46man, what a huge huge offense this is.
4:49Hey, you talked about the the dig route,
4:5285% success rate for Jeremy Bernard. You
4:54know what Aaron Rodgers going to love
4:56though? How about that 89% success rate
4:59on the out route here for Jeremy Bernard
5:02with a 13% route participation. So, one
5:05of his most utilized routes in Alabama's
5:08offense, 89% success rate. Man, that is
5:11something that Aaron Rodgers absolutely
5:13will love about this kid's game.
5:16>> Oh, yeah, no doubt. He'll love that and
5:19yeah, the
5:20>> kind of quicker out routes, too. Aaron
5:22Rodgers loves to throw those.
5:23>> Oh, he loves them.
5:24>> Yeah, I mean, it's going to be
5:27>> to those. He loves those things.
5:28>> He loves those routes and I think we'll
5:30see a lot of that from Jeremy Bernard.
5:32But, yeah, I think they needed a they
5:34kind of needed somebody to contribute
5:36right away, you know, and there were
5:37guys that maybe had some higher upside
5:39on the board.
5:41You know, when they got when they when
5:43they were on the board there and when
5:45when took that that pick, but there was
5:46a
5:47a gap between them at pick 15 in the
5:49second round to then pick seven in the
5:51third round. Antonio Williams was the
5:53next one. So, I think they got a guy who
5:54they can who can contribute early and
5:58can can be like a high floor player
5:59early on. So, I think whether it's
6:01Rogers or whether
6:03I mean, it's like again,
6:04April 27th as we're recording this, we
6:06still don't know if Rogers is going to
6:07play.
6:08>> It's not that he'll be back.
6:10>> I don't know. They took Drew Allen.
6:12>> Look, look, look, man. He does He just
6:13doesn't want to deal with the media. He
6:15doesn't want to deal with like, you
6:17know, spring football. He don't want to
6:19do any of that stuff.
6:20>> Cool. Yeah, he just want He doesn't want
6:21to participate with the team. Cool.
6:23That's awesome. Love [laughter] that.
6:24>> What? You know, and here's the other
6:25thing. It with Mike McCarthy there, like
6:28how much of a ramp-up time does he even
6:29really need?
6:31>> I bet Jalen Brunson I bet I bet Jalen
6:33Brunson would like to get a couple reps
6:35in with him, you know?
6:36>> Hey, listen, bro. You think Aaron
6:37Rodgers thinking about anybody other
6:38than Aaron Rodgers, dog? Like
6:40>> [laughter]
6:40>> Maybe he should think about Jalen
6:41Brunson. I I want him to think I want
6:43him to think about Jalen Brunson. I like
6:45>> Jalen Brunson. I'd like to see him get
6:46some chemistry with his quarterback. Uh,
6:48so
6:49>> don't care. Rodgers cares about Rodgers,
6:51man. Like he's like, I don't want to do
6:53spring football. I already know the
6:54playbook. I'm good to go, you know? Like
6:56>> Whatever. I I don't love that, but I do
6:59like the pick of [laughter] Jalen
7:00Brunson as just again, a tough physical
7:02receiver who's checks a lot of boxes.
7:05Good solid player.
7:06>> Are you Are you excited about this wide
7:08receiver room? Cuz honestly, DK Metcalf,
7:10Michael Pittman, that's like a
7:12a really like big name one-two. And then
7:14you add Jalen Brunson in there as
7:17a former Alabama receiver, you know? And
7:19again, just physical.
7:21Um, I don't know. Are you excited about
7:22this wide receiver room or no?
7:24>> Um, I think it's good. I think I think
7:26it's it's definitely better than what
7:28they've had the last few years in terms
7:29of a trio perspective. And Mike McCarthy
7:31is going to want to play some 11
7:32personnel West Coast stuff.
7:34Um,
7:35I think Michael Pittman's a great fit
7:36with where Rodgers is at this point.
7:38Quick game option. Um, I definitely am a
7:40little worried DK Metcalf at $32 million
7:42a year is going to see his target share
7:44kind of decline a little bit, but
7:47Um we'll see about that, but I do think
7:48like it's if I'm a Steelers fan, this is
7:50probably the best I felt about a wide
7:52receiver trio
7:54in a long time. Uh so exciting maybe not
7:57the word for it, but I think it's a good
7:59uh solid room of of complimentary
8:01players.
8:02>> My one I'll I'll I'll be I'll show my
8:05colors here. I I am excited about this
8:06room. I think it I think it pairs really
8:09well with where Rogers is at. Um give
8:12this guy some big body receivers that
8:15can catch. Um I love Pittman at the
8:16catch point, too. Um I like Bernard at
8:19the catch point, so it's fine. Um uh DK,
8:22too, to a degree, but he's physical. Um
8:24I think if they're Again, I am excited
8:26about this room. I am. That being said,
8:28the one my major area of concern, Matt,
8:31is who the hell's getting downfield? I
8:33mean, DK's
8:35>> It's got to be DK.
8:37>> It has to be DK. I get it, but at this
8:40point we're seeing him tested to catch,
8:41yeah. Very up and down down the field at
8:44this point. Like the returns are not
8:46nearly as good as they were 2 3 years
8:49ago, right? Like you're just not seeing
8:51that level of efficiency and
8:52productivity from DK
8:54um down the field. So I would say I just
8:57have a concern about is this going to
8:58end up being a little too truncated?
9:00Like can they get somebody who actually
9:03threatens vertical where other defenses
9:06really have to take notice of it? I just
9:08don't see DK being this guy that's going
9:10to be okay doing the whole, you know,
9:12cardio thing.
9:13>> Sacrificial X receiver stuff, yeah.
9:15>> see it.
9:15>> I don't know. They paid him way too much
9:17money to be a sacrificial X receiver,
9:19but um yeah, we'll see. I I'm really
9:21fascinated to see what these like the
9:23target share looks like in this room
9:24just cuz I do think um Pittman and
9:28Bernard uh but especially Pittman just
9:30really good layup receivers. And yeah,
9:32DK is definitely the most obviously
9:34highest upside, but most volatile player
9:36in the room. And like because he's the
9:37clear X in an offense that I don't think
9:40we'll be all that, you know, dynamic in
9:41terms of the motion and everything like
9:43that. I think
9:45we'll probably see some static X
9:46receiver stuff for our our guy DK
9:48Metcalf, but yeah, this is one of the
9:50more difficult ones to parse out from a
9:52target share perspective, but I did like
9:54them getting Jeremy Bernard to just kind
9:55of settle the room and I mean again,
9:58if Rodgers does not I still think it's
10:00maybe live that Rodgers doesn't come
10:01back. Maybe that's stupid just cuz he's
10:03missed so many like landmarks and you
10:05know, potential deadlines that they've
10:06put up here.
10:07>> Yeah.
10:08>> I if you have to play like Will Howard
10:10and Drew Aller and all that stuff, like
10:12I mean, at least you got two guys,
10:13Pittman and and and Bernard who are
10:15going to be in the right places at the
10:16right time.
10:17>> You know who it's going to end up being.
10:18It's going to end up being
10:20freaking Mason Rudolph again. Somehow,
10:22some way Mason Rudolph finds a way.
10:24Oh my god. I don't want It's like just
10:27for the my sanity, I don't want to see
10:28Mason Rudolph. Like we already know he's
10:30not good, you know? Like
10:32I'd rather them be not good with
10:34somebody new. Like him playing
10:35>> it'll be Will Howard. If it's not
10:36Rodgers, it'll end up being Will Howard.
10:38He was the opening starter at mini camp,
10:40but and hey, Will Howard I will say I
10:42>> Cuz I like Will Howard.
10:43>> Sixth round pick, but like watching
10:45Emeka Egbuka the year before, he ripped
10:47some throws over the middle of the
10:48field. So that at least that fits. That
10:50fits with Jeremy Bernard in the dig
10:52route. So there you go.
10:53>> There you go.
