Bo Nix

NegativeUsage2:36

Matt Harmon identifies Bo Nix as a primary contributor to Denver's 32nd-ranked offensive efficiency, citing poor accuracy, decision-making, and struggles under pressure. Nix missed key opportunities on wheel routes and quick outs, while also dealing with poor pass protection from backs and tight ends and lingering effects from an injury that hindered his field vision.

Courtland Sutton

NegativeUsage7:14

Matt Harmon expresses confusion over Courtland Sutton's lack of involvement, noting that despite being a primary read in the offensive design, he only recorded two receptions on five targets. Harmon deems this usage level unacceptable given Sutton's role in the offense.

Davis Webb

NegativeRole0:45

Matt Harmon criticizes Davis Webb's play-calling performance, noting his difficult debut against the Chiefs' defense and questioning if his role is a front-office retention move rather than a strategic choice by Sean Payton. Harmon attributes the Broncos' offensive struggles and failure to involve key playmakers to a combined failure of both Webb and quarterback Bo Nix.

Jaylen Waddle

PositiveValue4:58

Matt Harmon advises fantasy managers to buy low on Jaylen Waddle, characterizing his recent performance as his absolute floor. Despite limited targets, Waddle demonstrated strong separation skills and maintained a significant role, playing 65% of his snaps in the slot with frequent motion, suggesting he will remain a major part of the offense.

0:00Previously in the offseason, I had asked
0:02you how many weeks do you think before
0:03Shawn Payeyton reclaims play calling
0:06duties there in
0:08>> Look at the release.
0:09>> There's your separation stutter and go
0:11gets by.
0:12>> That is unbelievable.
0:13>> May be the greatest catch I've ever
0:15seen.
0:18How much longer do you think Shawn
0:21Payeyton, who at halftime made it
0:23abundantly clear that he was not having
0:26a great time not calling plays? Uh, how
0:28long before do you think the the Denver
0:31Broncos and Shawn Peyton say, "You know
0:32what, man? Let me just retake these play
0:35calling duties."
0:36>> I mean, is it even going to be eight
0:37quarters? Did I say eight games? Might
0:40not even be eight quarters. Now, I do
0:42think in hindsight,
0:44>> okay,
0:45>> really tough draw for Davis Webb to go
0:48into Kansas City uh and play against
0:51Steve Spagnolo in his very first game
0:54calling plays. Um I think that was
0:56obviously a tough draw. It did not go
0:59well for David. Frankly, it was actually
1:01not a very good week for the hey, I was
1:02a backup quarterback yesterday
1:05play calling crew. Um Davis Webb
1:08included. I think you could definitely
1:09throw uh you know David Blau in there. I
1:12think you could also certainly throw in
1:14Shawn Manion. Mixed results there. Um
1:17it's gonna take time for all these guys.
1:18I just wonder how patient the Broncos
1:20are going to be. Um because it was
1:22really bad on uh on on Monday night.
1:25Like we'll talk about the Jaylen Wadd
1:26stuff, but just I think the thing that
1:28really was just frustrating about this
1:31was you know they come out so pass heavy
1:34and their pass protection was brutal.
1:37And this is something that like, you
1:38know, Shawn Payeyton takes a ton of like
1:40pride and and really like loves the
1:43details of protection plans and the
1:46Broncos have always been a really good
1:47pass protection team because they have a
1:50good offensive line, but like their
1:52backs and their tight ends were getting
1:54worked in protection and just like
1:56allowing free runners at Bo Knicks. Um
1:59Bon Knicks then was making it I think he
2:00played I think he played a really poor
2:02game. He's also of course coming coming
2:04back from an injury, but
2:06>> yeah, just wasn't seeing things well and
2:08the pass protection was so so brutal. So
2:12>> I I think this is an outlier in terms of
2:14how bad it was. But again, I do wonder
2:16how patient Shawn Payeyton will be with
2:18Davis Webb and kind of, you know, I
2:20really just don't know what the point is
2:22at at this stage of the game of having
2:24Davis Webb call plays. The whole idea
2:27was let's let's kind of keep him in
2:30house and you know he he's getting these
2:32other job opportunities and and we need
2:34to keep him here. Shawn Peyton likes him
2:36here. Bonix and and Davis Webb
2:38apparently have a really good
2:39relationship. We need to keep Davis Webb
2:41in house. So let's have him call plays.
2:42I think I don't think you really have to
2:44worry about that right now. I think you
2:45actually need to worry about winning
2:46some football games. I think I saw the
2:48best point somebody made online, which
2:50is basically why would you ba basically
2:54be on the doorstep of a Super Bowl? And
2:57quite frankly, you know, again, if Bo
2:59Knicks did not get injured, I think we
3:01can all sit here and safely say that the
3:03Denver Broncos would have made the Super
3:05Bowl. Um, if if that's the case, why
3:09change anything offensively? You know,
3:12it's like Shawn Peyton, you did a great
3:14job. You did an awesome job calling
3:17plays. You got 14 wins last year, bro.
3:20Like, what are we doing? Why? Why? What
3:23is the motivation?
3:24>> It was weird, right? I mean, it was
3:26weird.
3:26>> I don't get it. I don't I really truly
3:29honestly don't get it. It's to the point
3:31where I actually think that George
3:32Patton, uh, the GM for the Broncos, I I
3:35almost wonder if he had to sit down with
3:37Shawn and said, "Dude, I don't want to
3:39lose, um, Davis Webb, and we're going to
3:42lose him unless we give him a little bit
3:44more responsibility and title." You know
3:46what I'm saying? Like, this doesn't seem
3:48like a Shawn Payeyton motivated uh,
3:52decision. That's that's all I would say.
3:53I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't
3:55know. Seems kind of weird. Well, the I
3:57mean the media is out in full force, you
3:59know, kind of throwing
4:02throwing Davis Webb and Bo Knicks like
4:04some some combination of them under the
4:06bus.
4:06>> Yeah.
4:07>> And I'll just tell you guys right now,
4:08like Shawn Peyton is one of the more I
4:11mean, dude, the guy's on K. Adams show
4:12like every week. I I was talking about
4:14this with Hayden Winks on on my Yahoo
4:16show. I was like, okay, does he co-o
4:18Does he co-host that show with KA Adams?
4:19like always he's [laughter] always
4:21there's flips I see all off seasonason
4:23of of of Shawn Peyton talking to K Adams
4:26the guy's connected in the media all
4:27right so just the whole thing is just
4:30like a little bit on my radar um overall
4:33so I guess what I'm what I'm looking at
4:36now is just you know how long does this
4:38last uh for for Shawn Payeyton and the
4:41Davis Web stuff I mean they got a they
4:43got another game you know against a
4:44really strong AFC contender in
4:46Jacksonville this week and I think that
4:48defense is, you know, in that's a tough
4:51one. That's a tough one. Um, so we'll
4:53see what happens. I would imagine Davis
4:55Webb goes into this game calling plays.
4:56We'll see if he comes out of it. Now, on
4:58the Jaylen Wadd usage, um, I thought it
5:01was fine, uh, going back and watching
5:03it. Obviously, like they've got to get
5:04him the football more than they did in
5:07this game. He also had a drop on the
5:08third and seven kind of quick slant,
5:11which, you know, he's got to catch that
5:12because that could have been a big play.
5:13That was that was a missed opportunity.
5:14His only other his one other target was
5:17like a just a bad like wheel route throw
5:19from Bo Nicks. The other one was like a
5:21quick out that Bo Nicks again just the
5:24poor placement, you know, dealing with
5:26pressure, whatever, being skittery. Poor
5:28placement where he's got to like adjust
5:29to it. Only gets two yards on the throw.
5:32Um but he played in the slot a ton. They
5:34were they told us the truth about that.
5:3565% snaps in the slot. Um he was off
5:39ball a ton. He was moving around. I
5:41thought he looked good and got some
5:43separation, but a lot of this stuff too
5:45is I mean again Steve Spagnola was great
5:47in this game. Tons of two high, you
5:49know, three deep safeties at different
5:51points. Um, you know, they were also
5:53sitting on the routes underneath too. So
5:55it just made life really difficult uh
5:57for Bo Knicks and, you know, they
6:00tackled I mean there the Chiefs had a
6:01great defensive g performance and
6:04ultimately the Broncos were the worst
6:05offense in the NFL in the collection of
6:07metrics that I like to look at. you
6:09know, they end up ranking 32nd in my
6:11offensive efficiency uh kind of
6:12spreadsheet here. So, gotta get better
6:14than that. Gotta be better than that.
6:16And and Jaylen Wadd, the guy you traded
6:18all those draft picks for, needs to be a
6:20big part of it. There's I I'm in
6:22fantasy, I'd be buying low on Waddle.
6:24There's no way there's no way that uh
6:27he's going to that that'll be his worst
6:28game of the season. That will obviously
6:29be his worst game of the season. I don't
6:31think there will be games like that
6:32going forward. I mean, Shawn Peyton told
6:34his wife to draft Jaylen L in fantasy.
6:37>> Did you see that? That was the funniest.
6:40That had to have been one of the
6:41funniest side stories, bro. The fact
6:43that he was so excited about Jaylen
6:45Waddle and obviously the game plan
6:46included him. I mean, there was a lot of
6:48movement. You talk about the slot usage.
6:50I mean, there was a lot of mo motion,
6:51too. And
6:52>> it seemed like it seemed like the game
6:54plan wanted to get him involved. I I'm
6:58not totally understanding why he wasn't
7:02involved. I mean, you're talking about a
7:03guy who just got two targets. Like, how
7:05does that how does that work? You know
7:07what I'm saying? Like I don't I'm just
7:09so confused why he was not targeted
7:12more, why Courtland Sutton wasn't
7:14targeted more. Um, and I know Davis Webb
7:17is is obviously getting a lot of flack
7:19and deserve deservedly so, but at the
7:22same time, how much of this is on Bo
7:23Knicks, too, because I mean, maybe the
7:26play design is your first read as
7:28Courtland Sutton. Maybe it is your first
7:29read is Jaylen Wadd, but I just don't
7:32understand. Two targets or excuse me,
7:34two receptions for Courtland Sutton.
7:36obviously got five targets and that's
7:37fine. Uh but Jaylen Wadd with just three
7:40targets on the game is is wild to me.
7:43Absolutely wild. And to me it's just
7:45unacceptable. That that's a failure from
7:47both both Nicks um and Davis Webb. So I
7:50don't know, man. I'm not 100% sure. I do
7:52know this man. Their schedule is
7:54absolutely brutal to start. Like you've
7:56got C this is a loss to Kansas City that
7:58I thought was a winnable game. Um
8:00Jacksonville is going to be a tough go
8:02here. Jacksonville looks like they've
8:04leveled up to another level. Uh they've
8:06got the Rams, they've got the San
8:07Francisco 49ers, they've got the
8:09Chargers. That looks like obviously a
8:11very winnable game now, but still, at
8:13least on paper, could be a difficult
8:15challenge. And then Seattle, right? So
8:17through the first six weeks
8:20there, Matt, there is a world where
8:22through the first six weeks they go 0
8:24and six. I mean, it's it's it's at least
8:26in the realm of possibility cuz those
8:28are five tough games coming up for the
8:31Denver Broncos.
