McCarthy is the Giants' backup contingency behind Winston.

McCarthy was acquired via trade and is waiting in the wings as a contingency if Winston's performance deteriorates; the trade was not intended as a direct threat to Winston but signals the Giants' hedge against extended backup quarterback play.
