Baker Mayfield

NegativeInjury16:15

Mayfield is wearing a protective glove on his thumb following an injury, but the source notes that despite this precaution, the Buccaneers' dominant rushing attack (258 yards on 49 design carries) meant Mayfield didn't need to throw much. The source questions whether the thumb injury will affect his play, but in this game it was a non-factor due to Tampa's run-heavy game plan (79.3% called run rate).

Insight page

Brock Purdy

NegativeProjection27:34

Purdy threw an interception this week on a mugged look where a linebacker came up to the line of scrimmage then retreated; Purdy was looking that way but couldn't see the linebacker over the line of scrimmage, illustrating a physical limitation in seeing over the middle of the field that can lead to poor decision-making.

Insight page
NegativeProjection45:29

Purdy threw an interception six plays into the 49ers' second-half possession after the Falcons mounted a 10-play touchdown drive; the source emphasizes the 49ers' offensive struggles in the game, noting a 6-play to 35-play disparity against Atlanta from late second quarter through the top of the fourth quarter, making it nearly impossible to win regardless of EPA or efficiency metrics.

Insight page

Bryce Young

NegativeMatchup17:00

Young and the Panthers were dominated by Tampa Bay's rushing attack in Week 7, allowing 258 rushing yards on 49 design carries with a 13% missed tackle rate (bottom 12 in NFL). The source notes the Panthers entered the game thinking they were the better team but were 'punched in the mouth' and 'shell-shocked,' with the game reaching 33-6 at one point. This was the Panthers' second home game in seven weeks of 2026 where they allowed more than 40 points, compared to only three such games in their 31-year franchise history.

Insight page

Cam Ward

NegativeRole15:27

The source expresses concern about the Titans' game plan and script with Ward, suggesting they don't trust him despite drafting him early. Ward went 11-for-18 for 87 yards in the first three quarters with low average depth of target, then 9-for-13 in the fourth quarter when the Titans were forced to play aggressively after blowing a 14-point lead. The source criticizes this inconsistency and conservative approach, noting Ward's 62.5% completion percentage and -2.3% completion percentage over expected (with no blitz), arguing the team should let their gunslinger quarterback "let it fly" to find out what they have.

Insight page

Daniel Jones

NegativeMatchup49:07

Against the Colts' historic 85.2% blitz rate (highest in NGS era), Daniel Jones faced only four non-blitz dropbacks all game, going 2-for-4 for 7 yards (1.8 yards per attempt) on those plays; he performed better against the blitz itself at 5.6 yards per attempt, suggesting confusion and inability to handle the extreme defensive scheme.

Insight page

Denzel Boston

PositiveBreakout51:44

The source acknowledges Denzel Boston has been receiving significant attention and performing well for the Browns, though notes that Casey Concepcion was drafted first and this particular game showcased what the team envisioned with Concepcion's role.

Insight page

Fernando Mendoza

PositiveRole43:37

The source believes it's time to start Mendoza, the number one overall pick, because he has the mobility to make plays outside of structure that Cousins lacks; the source feels seven weeks is an appropriate runway for a rookie to learn from failure without losing confidence, and Mendoza won't lose confidence or be bothered by failure.

Insight page
PositiveProjection44:44

Seven weeks into the season is described as an appropriate runway to evaluate the number one overall pick's performance and trajectory.

Insight page

J.J. McCarthy

PositiveProjection8:39

McCarthy showed significant improvement in Week 7 against Houston, posting 16 for 18 for 164 yards and a 104.6 QB rating against single-high coverage, plus 7 for 12 for 196 yards on passes of more than 10 air yards. The source contrasts this favorably with his previous week's garbage-time performance, noting McCarthy was 'entirely different mentally' and 'letting it rip' with confidence. He also had two 40-plus-yard throws in the first quarter, the first time that's happened since 2011.

Insight page

Jameson Williams

PositiveUsage24:18

Jameson Williams had big plays in Detroit's Week 7 game against Green Bay, contributing to an offense that relies heavily on playmakers like him and Jameer Gibbs to function at a high level.

Insight page

Jared Goff

PositiveProjection23:22

Jared Goff demolished Green Bay's defense on in-breaking routes in Week 7, completing 10 of 15 attempts for 199 yards, a touchdown, and a passer rating of 131.9 (13.3 yards per attempt)—more than double Green Bay's season average of 5.6 yards per attempt allowed on in-breakers. The source questions whether any quarterback is currently better at attacking the middle of the field than Goff, noting his consistency and volume on these throws.

Insight page
PositiveProjection23:22

The source notes that Jared Goff is 'playing fantastic this season' as part of a broader assessment of the Lions offense, which is described as 'cooking as a whole.'

Insight page
NegativeProjection27:26

Goff's ability to attack the middle of the field consistently opens up the entire offense; his willingness to throw over the middle—a trait many college quarterbacks avoid—allows defenses no free reign to be aggressive elsewhere. Through nearly halfway through the season, Goff has 14 touchdowns with still no interceptions, a performance the source believes deserves consideration on MVP ballots.

Insight page

Jeremiyah Love

NegativeRole41:23

Love is injured, and even if healthy, he's not producing in the Raiders' run game; the source notes he's not doing anything in an offense hampered by one of the worst offensive lines in the league with poor guard play and 0.2 yards before contact per carry.

Insight page

Kenneth Walker III

NegativeMatchup1:00

Against the Seahawks' dominant defensive line and split-safety coverage (70% of snaps), Walker posted 36 rushing yards, negative-15 rushing yards over expected, zero explosive runs, and a season-low 28.6% success rate. The source notes this was his first game with negative rush yards over expected despite the Seahawks playing cover six 36% of the time and zone coverage over 90% of the time—defensive schemes that should have allowed rushing success but didn't due to Seattle's front-line dominance.

Insight page

Kirk Cousins

NegativeProjection42:23

Cousins has started the season well for the Raiders, but the source believes the book is out on him: he struggles under pressure (8 for 17, 94 yards in this game) and against the blitz (7 for 14, 65 yards), lacking the mobility to make plays outside of structure; the source suggests Fernando Mendoza should replace him.

Insight page

Kyler Murray

NegativeProjection50:29

Against the Colts' extreme defensive pressure, Kyler Murray posted a 58.3% completion percentage with a negative 18.3% completion percentage over expected; when not blitzed (9-for-16, 90 yards), his passing chart showed almost no throws over the middle of the field, indicating offensive struggles despite the Vikings' strong record.

Insight page

Matthew Stafford

PositiveProjection44:24

Stafford led the Rams to a crucial win over the Raiders in Week 7; the source notes the Rams' season was effectively over if they lost this game, dropping to 2-5, making this victory critical for their playoff hopes.

Insight page
PositiveProjection44:55

Stafford completed 23 of 29 passes for 195 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in the Rams' critical win; the source frames this as part of a necessary step in the right direction for the Rams offense.

Insight page

Michael Penix Jr.

NegativeMatchup45:13

The Falcons' pass protection was exposed against the 49ers; Penix faced only a 17.1% pressure rate despite the 49ers blitzing on 34.3% of defensive plays, revealing a defensive book on Penix: pressure him, as that is when he plays his worst.

Insight page

Patrick Mahomes

NegativeMatchup4:03

Against Seattle's defense that shut down the run game and crossing routes, Mahomes completed 19 of 33 for 165 yards, one interception, and a 58.3 quarterback rating. The source explains that Seattle's defensive strategy of eliminating the Chiefs' run game and crossing routes left no third option for Kansas City's offense, forcing Mahomes into an ineffective game despite his typical excellence.

Insight page

Puka Nacua

NegativeUsage45:02

Nakua ran the most routes by far of any Rams receiver with 8 receptions on 10 targets for 68 receiving yards and a touchdown; however, the source expresses concern that the Rams offense had become too Nakua-focused going into the week, making the offense difficult and predictable for opposing defenses, though diversifying with tight ends is viewed as a step in the right direction.

Insight page

Sam LaPorta

PositiveRole23:24

Despite ongoing contract drama, LaPorta is performing at a high level in the Lions offense. The source praises his handling of the contract situation, noting he expressed a desire to remain in Detroit while advocating for fair compensation. The source characterizes LaPorta as 'balling' and part of a cooking offense alongside Jared Goff and Amon Ross St. Brown.

0:00Hey, it's Drew Franklin from NFL Cover Zero. The 2026 season is underway and we are loving football on TV.
0:06Here's what you can expect from the podcast in our second season.
0:10I would suggest for these preseason games, I think they should do what they do on the NFL draft.
0:16You know, when coverage of the NFL draft is basically for moms and they're just like, hey, he has a dog named Spark.
0:23Listen to NFL Cover Zero on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
0:28Welcome to the NFL Pro Week 7 Reaction Show.
0:31Thank you for listening on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
0:36Be sure to follow and subscribe to the show.
0:39They called it a passing league. They're dead wrong.
0:42This was a run game dominated week in the NFL.
0:45The league wide cold run rate, meaning the percentage of plays that were run plays across the NFL, highest for a single
0:52regular season week since 2018, 42.9%, which doesn't sound like a big number.
0:56That is a big number when it comes to how often it runs football.
1:00And everybody, well, most everybody was very successful at it.
1:04Unfortunately, one of the teams that was not successful at it was the Chiefs, who were one of the best rushing teams in the NFL.
1:11The team that you probably thought would have been the most successful at it, although against the Seahawks, right?
1:17We talked about this in the preview show. Kenneth Walker going up against his former team.
1:22The Seahawks know how to bottom up pretty well.
1:25And very clearly, their front had things prepared very well for this run game for the Kansas City Chiefs.
1:31And yet they were able to limit the Chiefs crossers as well.
1:35Like you talked about that is like, hey, if you're going to allocate resources to stopping Kenneth Walker, which we feel like
1:42they were going to, which they did. You're probably going to give up something in the crossers game.
1:47Mike McDonald was on it, man. I mean, this was just an incredible game for them to really bounce back, not only
1:54defend home turf, but get a big win, a much needed win against a premium opponent in the Kansas City Chiefs.
2:01It's a huge win for the Seattle Seahawks. And to stop a running back that was on a tear like Kenneth Walker
2:08was when your defense was in split safety looks almost 70% of the time.
2:12I mean, that is just defensive line dominance, man.
2:15They massacred them up front. There is no other way to describe it.
2:19If you're in split safety that much, and in particular, they were in cover six 36% of the time, which they were
2:26already the heaviest team in terms of cover six usage in the entire NFL.
2:30For those of you that don't know, by the way, cover six means you're playing cover two on one side of the
2:37field and you're playing quarters on the other side of the field.
2:41So you have two safeties well off the line of scrimmage.
2:44They were in zone coverage over 90% of the time in this game.
2:48And so even when they had safeties way off line of scrimmage, their defensive line was dominating so much.
2:54You shouldn't be able to do both. You should not be able to do both.
2:59And yet in this game, Kenneth Walker, 36 rushing yards, season low, negative 15 rushing yards over expected.
3:05First game this season with a negative rush yards over expected.
3:08Zero explosive runs from Kenneth Walker and a season low 28.6% success rate.
3:12Again, when you're playing all that split safeties, when you're playing all that cover six, you should not be able to do that.
3:19And yet the Seahawks, I think reminded everybody, hey, around the league, we got a lot of really great rushing attacks.
3:26But here we took on the best running back in the NFL and we said, we're still the Super Bowl champions.
3:32Dang it. And until somebody takes the crown off of our head, we're going to show that we're still capable of being
3:39one of the best teams in the NFL. Wow.
3:42And on the passing game side of things for the Chiefs, I mean, you know, if you take away the run game, you take away the crossing routes.
3:51You know, what's the third punch for Kansas City?
3:54They haven't needed one. That's the point. Yes. This time they needed one and they didn't have anything.
3:59Mahomes, 19 of 33, 165 and a pick. 58.3 quarterback rating because they took away the jab and the hook.
4:06They don't have anything else. This is not me saying the Chiefs are doomed or anything like that.
4:11No. There's very few teams that are equipped to handle them like this.
4:15Seattle is one of them. Absolutely. And let's talk about the offense really quick for Seattle because this game, it felt like
4:22could not have gone better for Seattle. I know Seattle fans would be like, well, if it was 70 to nothing, it
4:29probably would have been better for us. But in the reality of what you knew that this game was going to be,
4:36I mean, we talked about how they defended Kenneth Walker better than anybody has.
4:40We talked about how they defended Crossers well as well, given what they were able to do in coverage.
4:46And then against Jackson Smith and Jigba, we talked in the preview show about, man, okay, what's wrong with Sam Darnold?
4:53There was a lot of things, but that was bleeding into JSN a little bit because teams were playing him more in
5:00man this year because they were basically saying like, okay, sure.
5:03If you beat us in man coverage a little bit, that's fine.
5:07We just don't want you to tear us up versus zone like he has for the last couple of seasons, especially like he did in 2025.
5:15But the touchdown specifically to JSN, that was press man coverage.
5:19And he was able to beat it. And that was one of the biggest plays of the game.
5:24Man, it was zero. As aggressive as it gets.
5:27Yeah. We're talking about blitz zero. We are covering with four and rushing seven.
5:31With Mansoor Delane on him. This is every single talking point that we had of this game that the Seahawks went, nope,
5:38we're just going to have an advantage in all of the areas.
5:42We have JSN and you don't. Yeah, correct. And Mansoor has been great so far.
5:47Yes. And even great players can get got by legendary players.
5:50And that's what JSN is looking to be. I also want to shout out the Seahawks protection for how they sorted out the zero look.
5:58I mean, you know, you're bringing seven on the rush and they kind of use a couple tricks of the trade to block it up.
6:06You have the center kind of fanning out and getting his hands out there, getting a two for one.
6:12Very pro O-line in how you're explaining this right now.
6:15It's only a hold if they call it. Oh, it's a fan out technique.
6:19It's just starfishing out there. You can't get around me.
6:22George Alani's throwing his body in there. I love the chip with the tight end off the edge, which really is the
6:29tight end getting a two for one. Because if you're chipping the edge, it means the edge really doesn't have time to
6:36get there before the ball is out because it's a vertical route.
6:40So it's going to be a quick throw. And then you're occupying the safety with him because it's zero.
6:46The safety has to cover the tight end. So not only is he kind of taking away a rusher, he's also taking away a coverage player.
6:54And so if you block up a blitz zero like this and you have JSN one-on-one, I almost don't care what corner you have out there.
7:02Right. That's a touchdown. And that was the early difference in the game.
7:06So we told the people that this was going to be a show about the run game.
7:12And we talked about a run game that wasn't so great to start things out with the Kansas City Chiefs.
7:18A run game that was fantastic was what the New York Giants did this week.
7:22Speaking of not being able to stop duo, Giants had 188 rushing yards in this game, 63 rushing yards over expected.
7:29Texans allowed 106 yards after missed tackles. Absolutely horrible, atrocious, any synonym you want to choose.
7:34But to me, the lead story of this game, J.J.
7:37McCarthy. 18. What the hell? Because I know a lot of people are going to be talking about J.J.
7:43McCarthy coming off of this week. And he was a big point of conversation last week when he threw for over 200
7:50yards when he came in the game. But buried the lead.
7:53200 yards in a quarter. Okay, but here's the thing.
7:57You've got to set that up correctly. They're down 24.
8:00So he comes into the game. Who cares if he throws three picks?
8:04It doesn't matter. You're down 24. So the fact that he threw for over 200 yards with absolutely nothing to lose does not impress me.
8:12Especially for the fact that he did not play well under pressure when he was pressured during that fourth quarter.
8:18The key to this week was going to be, can he take that freedom, that confidence in which he just let it rip the previous week?
8:26Can you build upon that? Can you at least show me some consistency there?
8:30He didn't just show consistency. That was the whole game.
8:33That was the whole day for J.J. McCarthy. So yes, where a week ago, I'm not really impressed with the garbage time stats that you rack up.
8:42This week, against this defense, specifically, dude, I don't know if you saw these numbers.
8:47Against single high, right? So the Texans, they have Kalen Bullock.
8:50They have a player in their secondary at the safety level who is capable of playing single high coverage.
8:56So they'll play cover three. They'll play cover one a lot.
8:59Every single time that they put these receivers in one-on-one situations, especially when they're pressed, McCarthy was ready to let it rip
9:06on it, which you love to see. That's kind of like the Drake May thing, right?
9:11Anytime you play May in press man coverage, he goes, okay.
9:15And he puts the ball exactly where his receiver can go get it.
9:19McCarthy in this game versus single high. 16 for 18, 164 passing yards and a 104.6 quarterback rating.
9:25He was also 7 for 12 for 196 passing yards on passes of more than 10 air yards.
9:30That's confidence. That's playing free. That's letting it rip.
9:33So where, again, I wasn't really impressed with him last week, very impressed with J.J.
9:38McCarthy this week. He looks entirely different mentally, and I don't know him personally.
9:42I can't say if this is true, but just the sense that I get as an outsider.
9:47I thought you were the best man at his wedding.
9:50That wasn't you? Yeah, we go way back. Okay.
9:53We go way back. There is a certain piece that comes from failure.
9:57Totally. It can't get worse. You already failed. No doubt.
10:00Yeah. Right. Right. What are you going to do, fail more?
10:04Right. Yeah. You got traded for a fifth-round pick after being a super-high draft pick.
10:09You're only a few years into your career. You failed hard.
10:12One of the worst failures, I guess you could say, for a highly-drafted quarterback in recent memory.
10:17It can't get worse. So you go out there and you rip it.
10:21He had two 40-plus-yard throws in the first quarter.
10:24That's the first time it's happened since 2011. Yeah.
10:27That was Eli. Yeah. That was 15 years ago.
10:30He was a child. And learning to fail and deal with failure.
10:34But to your point, before this week, how good Bryce was playing, when he came back from being benched, you were the
10:41number one overall pick that your team went up and traded all these assets for for you to go be the franchise saver.
10:48You were not that player for the majority of the start of your career.
10:52You get benched. And he comes back and almost has this attitude where, just like you said, it's almost like, I've already been benched, man.
11:00I'm playing with house money. And now Bryce is, I know, again, not a good week to exactly point this out, but like letting it rip.
11:08And I think there's something to what you said where you just say to yourself, hey, man, it went as bad as it could go.
11:16Yeah. Why not just have fun? Anytime you've got Malik Neighbors one-on-one, you're going to give him a chance.
11:22An excellent ball location by J.J. McCarthy. There's so many quarterbacks.
11:25I mean, C.J. Stroud had a bad 20-25 and a horrific playoff run.
11:29Couldn't get worse. So he's just been out here ripping it, playing really well this season.
11:34You look at Sam Darnold. You know, he was a first-round failure.
11:38Went to a few different teams. You know, Baker, I think, is another one.
11:43Geno Smith is another one. Like, these young guys, when they get in the NFL, and they have never failed before, and then they do.
11:50And there's so much pressure. Yeah, so much, especially, you know, after what Sam did to follow that.
11:56And, man, I just respect the hell out of him for this bounce back.
12:00I think that shows a lot. So speaking of bounce back, I mean, was there a more predictable redemption story than Cam Scadaboo bouncing back this week?
12:09Oh, you knew he was going to get in the NFL.
12:12I mean, okay, he doesn't get a single carry the week before, and John Harbaugh's like, oh, that's not on purpose.
12:19And Cam Scadaboo's in the locker room, and he's like, hey, man, I get it.
12:23I had to take my lumps. I fumbled the football.
12:27If I didn't get a carry, it's because I failed.
12:30And you go, that's the guy that you give redemption carries to.
12:34In this game, 17 attempts, 124 rushing yards, obviously a lot of them in that overtime period for them to win this game.
12:41But, man, you go back to the Texans as well.
12:44Texans, 50% rush success rate. If you take that rush success rate allowed and pair it against what the league average is
12:51for these teams, that would be number one. And by number one, I mean the worst.
12:56So this Texans team, where they win two in a row, now sitting here at two and five.
13:01They have no margin for error the rest of the season.
13:05Zero. Zero. You could say it's already over, but the fact they started 0-3 last year and ripped off nine straight, like it's not entirely over.
13:13Right. But they can't lose again the rest of the year.
13:16Yeah. And there is not a lot, unfortunately, about this defense.
13:20For all the great talent that they have, that tells me it's just going to flip a switch for the next three months and it'd be okay now.
13:29Because they got real problems up front. Shockingly, they do.
13:32I don't know how. I don't either. But like, they're getting pushed around in the ground game.
13:37It's one of the great mysteries, I think, of this season that obviously I think that we'll dive into a little bit more here on this channel.
13:45But man, it's just another day where I'm just so shocked at how poor it was.
13:50Now, as far as other shocking things related to this game.
13:54So we came into this season. A lot of people picked the Eagles to win the division.
13:59A lot of people picked the Cowboys to win the division.
14:03Who and I among them? Some people even got frisky.
14:06Chose the commanders. The Giants were like the tongue-in-cheek trendy pick.
14:09But not to win the division. More so to be a wildcard team.
14:13A plucky wildcard team that might get there. But then lose.
14:17But it's a feel-good season. Stepping stone. I think they might actually be the best team in the NFC East.
14:23Well, there's so much unknown, like you said, with those other teams.
14:27JJ plays like this even every other week. With them sitting here at 4-2-1.
14:31The thing is, they already have such a lead built in here.
14:35Okay. Like, my big takeaway here from this game is that the Giants are a much more formidable foe than I thought
14:42that they were going to be going into this season.
14:45Albeit in ways that I didn't really expect. Certainly with JJ McCarthy being one of them.
14:50But, like, McCarthy plays like this? Yeah, you've got a chance to beat teams in this league.
14:55100%. And they're already two games up, depending on what happens on Monday Night Football.
15:00So, my takeaway from this is, Giants got a for-real chance to be one of the top teams.
15:06It's not the top team coming out of this division.
15:09And here comes Singletary. The former Houston Texan wins the game for the Giants!
15:13Yeah! Why not? Why not? Speaking of two and five ball clubs.
15:17You want some numbers? I got some numbers for you here.
15:20Go for it. I have no idea how this happened.
15:23Dude, we watched it live and we didn't know how it happened.
15:27And after listening to Dave Canales afterwards, I think he also has no idea how this happened.
15:32Because here's some numbers from this game. You talk about run game dominance.
15:37Bucks, 258 rushing yards on 49 design carries. 49 design carries in 2026 year of our lore anyways is wild.
15:43That's two games for some teams. Panthers had a 13% missed tackle rate.
15:47That would have been bottom 12 versus NFL averages.
15:50The time of possession in this game was Tampa had 35-24 to the Carolina Panthers.
15:54Brett, the Buccaneers had five passes in this game that went beyond the line of scrimmage.
15:59Five. Five. What camera am I looking at? I'll look at it both.
16:03So in case you get the screenshot here. Five.
16:06Five passes. Don't do that. Jaden's going to sue you.
16:09Sorry. Hand down. Sorry. Let's cut that. They had five passes that crossed the line of scrimmage.
16:15And Mayfield's thumb. Everybody's like, oh, you know, what kind of a player is he going to be with a thumb injury?
16:22He's wearing the glove to sort of protect the thumb coming off injury and everything like that.
16:27They didn't have to. They didn't have to do anything.
16:30And it was just, and everything that the players kept saying in this game afterwards as I was sort of reading the
16:37quotes from them in the locker room and again, like reading David Canales' quotes is they got their ass whooped in this game.
16:44They got punched in the mouth and they were very shell-shocked about it.
16:48I think the Panthers walked into this game, understandably so, thinking we are the better team.
16:53We're at the top of this division. We're feeling good.
16:56We're rolling. Bryce is great. The defense is playing great.
16:59What was the score at one point? 33 to 6 or something?
17:03I think they just, they blinked and it was like that.
17:07And all of a sudden the game's not even close to the script that you even wanted it to be.
17:13So, shout out to Tampa for obviously having a hell of a day on the ground.
17:1879.3% called run rate, by the way. Second highest in a single game since 2018, trailing only that New England Patriots and
17:25Buffalo Bills game where the wind was 40 miles an hour.
17:28And they just never threw the football, either team.
17:31I mean, you say never threw the football. He's only slightly exaggerating.
17:35Mack Jones had three passes. Three passes. Three passes.
17:38So, if we look at normal weather games, this was the run heaviest game in almost a decade.
17:43Yeah. That's insane. Yeah. 258 rushing yards, second most allowed by a team this season, behind only the Panthers in week one to the Bears.
17:51And fun fact, this is a trivia for those of you at home.
17:55So, entering this season, the Panthers have been around for 31 years.
17:59They only had three home games total where they allowed more than 40 points in 31 years.
18:04We are seven weeks into 2026 and they have done it twice.
18:08So, I don't know how you fix this because this was just getting pushed around.
18:13This wasn't a scheme thing. This was just flat out getting dominated.
18:16This is a burn the tape game if you're the Panthers.
18:20You have to. This is a, hey, you go into the locker room.
18:24If you're Dave Canales and you go, we all feel it.
18:27We all have the feeling. We all know what happened.
18:31We're all pissed off about it because they have to move on immediately.
18:35They play Thursday Night Football this upcoming week. Oh, God, they do.
18:38So, they have to move on immediately from this.
18:41You want to hear an update of the NFC South standings?
18:45Sure. Carolina is still number one at 3-3. Right behind them is the Atlanta Falcons at 3-4.
18:50Right behind them, still in it. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 2-5.
18:54And then it's the Saints also at 2-5. This division is going to give me an aneurysm.
18:59We do this every year. Every year. Somebody pulls away early and it's like, oh, it's a runaway.
19:05And then they just end up in this middle destruction derby that's like, it's entertaining for everybody else.
19:10It's horrible for NFC South fans that have to deal with this every year because you know it's going to look like this.
19:17They're going to be separated by like a game and a half in week 18.
19:22Yeah. Every fan base is just going to want it to be over.
19:26So, Bucs had 22 points off turnovers in this game.
19:29Obviously, that doesn't help on the fact that Carolina couldn't stop the run at all.
19:34Also, because you and I have dubbed this the year of special teams, wanted to shout this out because Callie, our researcher
19:41at NGS, made sure to let us know. 6.4 EPA earned by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers off of special teams in this game.
19:48More than double of any other team this week.
19:51Special teams matters. Third phase matters. The third phase matters.
19:54I'm going to start calling, you know what? I'm going to start calling special teams the second phase.
20:00So, what's the third one? Apparently run defense. Yeah.
20:03You know. Defense kind of bad. Defense kind of bad this year.
20:06So, you know what? Special teams, you've been elevated to the second phase.
20:10Offense in the first phase. Then it's special teams.
20:13Then it's defense. And we'll reevaluate next week. We'll update the power rankings next week.
20:18What's that video? You have been promoted. You are now my second favorite employee.
20:22Can you tell it's really late at night when we're doing this show?
20:26I think people are well aware, my friend. I think people are well aware.
20:31Shall we talk about the chaos that was Lions-Packers?
20:34Speaking of special teams. Football is back. Hey, it's Drew Franklin from NFL Cover Zero.
20:38Enjoy the NFL season while listening to NFL Cover Zero.
20:41We have storylines, predictions, and lots of silliness. Here's what you can expect from the podcast in our second season.
20:48When you meet people and you say your job's a sports announcer, it's always interesting to see what the first thing they say is.
20:55I did have one of the more difficult questions, though.
20:58He sits next to me and he sees I'm on my computer and he goes, big sports fan.
21:04And I was like, yeah, actually. And he goes, what are you thinking about my Jaguars this year?
21:10I realized, like, no one's ever asked me that question ever about anything.
21:14And I was like, do you want? Listen to NFL Cover Zero on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
21:21Florida legend, by the way, Trace Mack. He missed one from 35.
21:25And then what was the other one? I think like 27, like 28.
21:29Dude. Something like that. You can't rationalize that. How far was the Blair Walsh miss?
21:34In the playoffs? Yeah. Where Paul Allen was, like, apoplectic.
21:37Yeah, yeah. I mean, we were all Paul Allen in that moment.
21:40He's, like, screaming, the season can't end this way!
21:43And it is! The season can't end like that!
21:46He missed it left! And the Seattle Seahawks are off to Charlotte.
21:50Blair Walsh missed a 27-yard field goal. And the Minnesota Vikings are going to lose 10-9.
21:55That's probably how you feel as a Green Bay fan right here.
21:59Because you lost this game by a field goal.
22:01You had two that were gimmies. Chip shots. Have to make.
22:05Not even thinking about what might happen if you miss this field goal type of feeling.
22:10And I think that Packers fans are gutted because you're on the road, had a very realistic chance to win this game.
22:17And you didn't do it. And I think that I want to start with Jameer Gibbs' Herculean effort before we talk about everything else.
22:24Because that's the theme of the day, is establishing it and running the football.
22:29This is from NGS. Jameer Gibbs recorded a 48.3% success rate despite having a career-low negative 24 rushing yards before contact in this game.
22:36Of the 19 other games where a running back had negative 20 or fewer rushing yards before contact since 2018, the average success rate was 21.7.
22:44Less than half. He's underpaid already for what he gives them.
22:48He kind of is. He kind of is. I mean, if you're looking at the best backs in the league, like what
22:55would the Falcons be without the stabilizing presence of Bichon?
22:58What would the Lions be without Jameer? And for, you know, a typical top 10 running back contract to be 7, 7.5%
23:05of the cap, I'm pretty sure the Lions are happy with giving 7% of their cap to that guy.
23:11What else are you going to spend it on?
23:13That had some venom in it. What else are you going to spend it on?
23:18I think that this offense obviously is cooking as a whole.
23:22Jared Goff's playing fantastic this season. Amon Ross St.
23:24Brown is, you know, a constant. I know there's the drama with Sam Laporta's contract and everything, but like Laporta's balling.
23:31Great answer, by the way. I don't know if you heard when media asked him about it.
23:36Today? No, it was a couple days ago. And Laporta, we'll pull the sound, we'll play it for you through the magic of editing.
23:44I want to play for this team. I give everything I have.
23:48My teammates do as well. They all love me, respect me, and support me.
23:52And they want to see me be happy and compensated, I guess.
23:56He sounded extremely reasonable. Like he still wants to be in Detroit and explain himself.
24:00And I thought it was the best way to handle contract drama.
24:04Just like laying it out there. Hey, I'm a person.
24:07I have a limited amount of time in my life to make generational wealth.
24:12I really like it here. I had my kid here.
24:15I'm a good football player. Let's get this thing done.
24:18Right. You don't often see this conversation now. But you do see it plenty of times in the offseason, right?
24:24Like Baker Mayfield did the same thing with the Buccaneers.
24:27He got up at the podium and he talked about basically those same things.
24:32You just don't normally see it during the season.
24:34But anyways, Laporta was great. Jameson Williams had his big plays in this game.
24:39But this offense, to think of what it would be without Jameer Gibbs or even just like a replacement player.
24:45Right? You go down to league average. What is this team?
24:49And it's, for as much as Detroit has struggled in other areas this year, this season's a lot more grim if you don't have that player.
24:57Did Jameer, Jameer signed the deal second, right? So he technically set the market.
25:01Yeah, they were right next to each other. I think B.
25:05John, I think B. John signed first. So technically, Jameer Gibbs is the highest paid running back in the NFL.
25:11And I'd agree with you, man. It feels like he is already underpaid even for resetting the market.
25:16I also want to talk about Jared Goff. Because going into this game, we highlighted Jonathan Gannon's defense and how tricky he
25:23is in terms of really leaning into starting in one high pre-snap and then getting into two high post-snap.
25:29Whereas most defensive coaches start two high pre-snap and get into one high post-snap.
25:34He does it the hard way. And what they do is they try to bait out throwing the ball by presenting one high.
25:41And then they get into two high. Surprise, it's quarters and you try to throw into it.
25:46That's why they're really good at stopping intermediate throws over the middle.
25:50If you're looking at the Green Bay defense versus in-breakers going into this game, 5.6 yards per attempt allowed on in-breakers.
25:56That was best in the league. Negative .11 EPA allowed on in-breakers.
26:00Third best in the league. 3.8 yards after catch per reception allowed on in-breakers.
26:05Second best in the league. So they stopped the throw.
26:08And even if you caught it, they were really good at getting you on the ground.
26:13Jared Goff in this game on in-breaking routes. 10 of 15.
26:16199. Touchdown. Passer rating 131.9. Yards per attempt 13.3.
26:19Over double what Green Bay had allowed so far this season on in-breaking routes.
26:23He demolished them. Is there anybody better? Right now?
26:26Over the middle? Boy, probably not. I mean, he's- Like, Lawrence, I think, has been really good at it.
26:32He's been awesome. Yes. As far as consistent- Lawrence is a good call.
26:36Right, right. And for the volume that he does it.
26:39I know. Like, 15 throws. You know how difficult that is to do?
26:43How many quarterbacks do we highlight every single week where we look at their passing chart and we just go, what's going on right here?
26:51Oh, my God. We just draw the box. Dude, editors, please put up Kyler Murray's passing chart right now.
26:57Well, hold on. No, no, no. We're gonna- No, no, no.
27:01Don't do it yet. We're gonna get to Kyler Murray's passing chart.
27:04Dude. You gotta get people to continue to watch the video.
27:08We need the watch time up, Brett. It's crazy.
27:11Yeah. That these two guys technically play the same sport.
27:14It's- I don't know if they do. We might have to call it two different sports.
27:19We might have to say they're playing something different because, yeah, I mean, that's obviously- When you can attack the middle of
27:26the field the way that Jared Goff can, that's when everything else opens up, right?
27:30When you and I talk about quarterbacks as draft prospects and we talk about these guys in college that just don't really
27:37want to throw over the middle of the field, either maybe because they're not built that way, like they don't sometimes have the height for it.
27:45Like, Kyler Murray obviously is a smaller quarterback, so it's tougher for him to see over the middle, tougher for him to regularly attack over the middle.
27:54But I know we'll talk about Brock Purdy a little bit as well.
27:58One of Brock Purdy's interceptions this week was- it was on a mugged look where the linebacker was coming up to the
28:05line scrimmage and then he retreated, and Purdy was looking that way, but he couldn't see him because he couldn't see him over a line scrimmage.
28:13So you have to have certain physical things, but also it's mental as well.
28:17A lot of times in college, these quarterbacks don't want to throw over the middle of the field.
28:23Why? Because they throw the interceptions and it makes their stats look bad and like things like that where they don't really want to do it.
28:31When you get to the NFL, you have to.
28:34Because if you can't attack over the middle of the field, you give the defense free reign to be so aggressive in so many other areas.
28:42Cap coverage to the guys on the outside, outside the numbers.
28:45Having an extra player in the box, handling motion pretty appropriately because you could just rotate your safeties in and out because
28:52you don't have to worry too much about which guy's better over the middle of the field in that robber role or whatever.
29:00To me, it's so, so, so valuable the way that Jared Goff plays the game.
29:04And I think he deserves a shout out for that because he's been fantastic this year and I think this game really shows that.
29:1214 touchdowns, still no picks, and we're almost halfway through the year.
29:15So, ready on people's MVP ballots. I agree. We have a vote.
29:19I agree. All right, let's talk about the Paris game.
29:22Football's back. Hey, it's Drew Franklin from NFL Cover Zero.
29:25Enjoy the NFL season while listening to NFL Cover Zero.
29:29We have storylines, predictions, and lots of silliness. Here's what you can expect from the podcast in our second season.
29:35When you meet people and you say your job's a sports announcer, it's always interesting to see what the first thing they say is.
29:42I did have one of the more difficult questions, though.
29:46He sits next to me and he sees I'm on my computer and he goes, big sports fan.
29:51And I was like, yeah, actually. And he goes, what do you think about my Jaguars this year?
29:57I realized, like, no one's ever asked me that question ever about anything.
30:01And I was like, duval. Listen to NFL Cover Zero on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
30:08All right. A battle between two former French territories.
30:11Well, cities in a French territory. In New France back in the 18th century.
30:15Fun fact. Pittsburgh, yes, also used to be technically kind of sort of in France.
30:20Just like New Orleans. Is that why they put French fries on burgers?
30:24Sure. That's probably the right answer. Come on. And coleslaw for some reason.
30:28Trying to be called. Oh, yeah. It's the coleslaw thing.
30:31You're right. You're right. You're right. You're right. You're right.
30:34I'm not a fan of that. But in general, Pittsburgh.
30:37French fries or coleslaw? On a burger. Oh, coleslaw.
30:40Are you just not a coleslaw guy? I'm not a coleslaw guy.
30:44Oh, I like coleslaw. You're a barbecue guy, so anything tangentially barbecue related.
30:48Yeah, anything in a barbecue establishment I'm pretty much good with.
30:51Anyway. Steelers, Saints. This was something as far as the difference between a great run game and a bad run game.
30:58And I don't want people's eyes to glaze over because I know this is going to be kind of like complicated analytics.
31:05But in general, we have one rule when we're looking at how good a team is analytically.
31:10Big number good. Small number bad. Steelers. Designed run success rate.
31:1348.1%. Pretty good. Big number. Big number. Saints. Designed run success rate.
31:1713.3%. Small number. Very bad. Small number bad. Small number.
31:20Very, very bad. Yeah. They got nothing on the ground.
31:23And this has been a trend that's developed throughout this season where they, you know, they've taken some offensive line injuries.
31:30I get it. But the running backs aren't creating on their own.
31:34You're leaving Tyler Shuck out to dry. He's got extremely long average yards to go on third down.
31:39In particular, the Steelers' average yards to go on third down in this game was 5.8 because they ran the ball so well.
31:47Yep. The Saints' average yards to go on third down was 8.6.
31:50So that's a difference of 3.2 yards. Yeah, that's bad.
31:53On average. On third down. League-wide, if you're looking at the average conversion rate in certain distances on third down, if you're
32:00in third and seven plus, your average conversion rate is just under 25%.
32:04Not great. Third and medium, it jumps up to just over 45%.
32:08So you get about 25%, maybe a little bit more than 25%.
32:12It's huge. 20%. 20%. 20%. I'm a film major.
32:15I'm not good at math. And so they put me on a math-focused show for some reason.
32:20Anyway, we'll address that later. We got editors for that.
32:23We'll get a stunt double in here. They'll do the math.
32:27And then, you know, you'll come in for the lines.
32:30You'll come in for the lines. Where's Jordan Rodney?
32:33We do need a hard edit one week where it's just you saying something, and then Jordan Rodney just shows up in
32:39the chair, and then it hard edits with her out, and then you're back in.
32:44Like the big short. You're just bringing on Anthony Bourdain to explain economics concepts.
32:49Exactly. Bring on Jordan to talk stats. You get it.
32:52You get it. Anyway, big number good, small number bad.
32:55When you're that bad on second down, they had a .4 yards per carry on second down.
33:00That's horrible. They had four tackles for loss taken on second down.
33:04That's how you end up in third and forever.
33:07You can't move the chains because you're in third and forever.
33:10And you just get slowly ground down. And I've had nits to pick with Tyler Shuck this year.
33:16But if you're looking at the environment that he's being asked to produce in, it's not sustainable.
33:21You can't do it by yourself. There's very few quarterbacks that I think could do it.
33:26Right. Patrick Mahomes barely could. Right. Kind of. Yeah.
33:29You look at this on paper with the Saints, and I think that's a reason why a lot of people took them to win the division.
33:37They said, okay, they have the trenches are eating your vegetables.
33:41Okay? They ate their vegetables here. The trenches are supposed to be good.
33:45Now we get to talk about Tyler Shuck and Jordan Tyson and how good Chris Olave is and Devon Vele and signing Travis A.
33:52Chan and all of that. Those things don't matter when you don't have the trenches right.
33:57And right now, over the last three to four weeks, the Saints absolutely do not have the trenches right.
34:03They cannot stop the run. We talked about how good the Pittsburgh Steelers were on the ground game.
34:09Now, Jalen Warren's been doing it to basically everybody.
34:11But still, they didn't stop the run at all.
34:14They were terrible at it again in this game.
34:17But then specifically, I want to talk about the offensive line here.
34:21You said that they got nothing on the ground.
34:2418 yards on 17 carries. That's horrible. You talked about on second down, running the football, four tackles for loss?
34:30All right. Here's the stat that really blew me away here for how bad it is for the Saints on the offensive line.
34:37The highest stuff rate in the NFL, which is stuff rate means that you get to the line of scrimmage and that is it.
34:45You don't get anything past the line of scrimmage.
34:47You have been stuffed at the line of scrimmage.
34:50The highest stuff rate in the NFL by a team going into this week was the Philadelphia Eagles.
34:56They were 23.9%. Shocker. It has not been good for the Philadelphia Eagles.
35:00We've talked about that many times. The Saints in this game had a run stuff rate of 35.3%.
35:06The highest in the NFL was to 23.9% as an average.
35:09They had 35.3%. You can't win football games like that.
35:12It's not possible. You cannot. The fact that this game was even close.
35:16Right. And so this is now something that Kellen Moore has got to get fixed real quick.
35:22Because if it continues to look this bad in both the trenches for the Saints, we're going to start talking about his seat being real hot.
35:30I mean. Real hot. I mean, when you have the owner, this was what, two weeks ago, putting out a statement of like, get it together.
35:38It's time. Yeah. Right. I mean, that seat's already hot.
35:41Yeah. Yeah. That's a good point. But that's it.
35:44I went back and watched the tape on this one, which, by the way, I do want to shout out.
35:50The Steelers defense is playing great. Yeah. Cam Hayward played great.
35:54Keanu Benton's been playing great this season. The edge rushers are doing their thing as they have in Pittsburgh for a long time.
36:01And I will say, really great game from both Patrick Queen and Peyton Wilson from what I saw in this one.
36:07They were attack dogs in this game. So I don't want to take anything away from the Steelers front seven playing at
36:14a very high level over the last couple of weeks.
36:17I want to give them their credit here. But ultimately, if you're the Saints, there was nothing that these running backs could do.
36:24You know? You could have Barry Sanders back there, and I don't know how much he's doing.
36:30He's doing more than 17 yards. But that just goes to show or to say and emphasize, this offensive line's bad.
36:36The Saints ain't going anywhere until they get that fixed.
36:40And obviously, the Steelers, for as much as we can sit here and go, do the Steelers have the highest ceiling on
36:46offense of any team in the NFL? Obviously not.
36:49But the floor is. But they're making it work.
36:52They're making it work. And Aaron Rodgers, you watch him in this game, he looked younger than he has in years.
36:59And so I think you've got to feel pretty good about that if you're a Steelers fan.
37:04And the offensive line, that young Steelers offensive line, I know we've praised it, but Frazier is a top three center, and I'm not sure he's three.
37:12Right? They obviously hit on Maxi Hanachor. Yeah. Really, five across.
37:16This is a great young offensive line. Jalen Warren averaged six and a half yards per carry inside the tackles.
37:22They're just beating these guys up. How about we get to quarterback runs?
37:26Bo Nix had a massive touchdown run today against Arizona.
37:29Crumbling pocket. Nix on the move. He hasn't run it much, but he's got room to roam.
37:35Being chased. 10-5. Touchdown! 62-yard touchdown run! So a little bit of sigh relief for Broncos fans, but I want to talk
37:41about that long Bo Nix touchdown where he took off and there was just nobody around.
37:46We were watching in the newsroom and Bill Smith was like, where is everybody?
37:51He did. There's nobody in the frame. One of the benefits of this show is that we get access to every single camera.
37:58So we immediately went back and we looked through all the angles.
38:02We're like, how did this happen? And we found a particular angle.
38:06I want you guys to pay attention to Adam Troutman, who Broncos fans have mixed opinions of, but hopefully this helps.
38:12So Adam was running a route and when he broke in, you can see on camera, he saw that Bo Nix was taking off.
38:20And rather than turning around and trying to block, because it was man coverage and he knew all he had to do
38:27was just keep the defender turned away from Bo and he's going to run right by him.
38:32When Bo was like 20 yards down the field, Adam Troutman's running a fake juke route out of nowhere where he like
38:39pivots inside and then breaks back inside again, shows his hands like he's going to catch a pass like he's being thrown to.
38:46And the defender's all over. He's like, oh, I'm going to get a PBU here.
38:51Meanwhile, Bo Nix is just running behind him for like an 80-yard touchdown.
38:55So that might have been the block of the day and it wasn't even a block.
39:00That was just Adam Troutman making a heads up play.
39:03That was the block of the day. You know what?
39:06I'm calling it the block of the day. You're right.
39:09It was great. It was a great heads up play.
39:12Yeah. No, that was so much fun to watch.
39:15And it was like the final evolution of, you know, how quarterbacks will pump fake even though they're past live scrimmage.
39:22The Josh Allen special. That's like the final evolution of that.
39:25The tight end or a wide receiver fooling the defensive back like that.
39:29On the Cardinals side of things, look, I know the Cardinals have gotten some exciting wins this season, specifically in SoFi against the Chargers and the Rams.
39:38But ultimately, their offensive line is just not good enough to be consistent.
39:42Trench is obviously a theme on here and what we're talking about.
39:45And anytime the theme of the overall day is running the football, you've got to talk about the trenches.
39:51Unfortunately, in this one, with Perrin Johnson Jr. out of this lineup at left tackle, they're forced to play Jaden Williams, who
39:58is a seventh round offensive tackle rookie this year.
40:01He gave up 15 pressures in this game. A 28.3% pressure percentage, which was the highest in a single game since 2022
40:08when Greg Little gave up 19 in one game.
40:11Which that would be the most. Greg Little, what a pull.
40:14In the NGS era. But also, like, for Jaden, 10 quick pressures, which led all offensive tackles this week, as you might expect.
40:21And that's the most in a single game that we have so far this season.
40:26And a quick pressure is any pressure that happens before two and a half seconds.
40:31But you look at their entire offensive line. Isaac Sulmelow, 9.4% pressure percentage.
40:35Elijah Wilkinson, the other tackle, 13.2%. Yalda Frootholt, 7.5%.
40:38Hayden Conner, 13.2%. You're just, you're not going to, you can't win this way.
40:42You know what would fix it? Drafting a running back third overall.
40:46Well, look. Team builder. That was a low blow.
40:49I'm sorry, Carls fans. Team builder in me, not the biggest fan of that.
40:53However, if you have Chase Pesantis and Parashanti Jr.
40:56No, I acknowledge. On paper. In this lineup, it does look better.
41:00Yes. On paper, when they went into the draft, the left side was fine.
41:04The right side was not fine. Right. And so they're like, okay, let's take the transcendent player.
41:09And then we think we can get a guard on day two.
41:13And they were correct. They got a guard on day two.
41:16And then they lost their best player. And they lost the guard.
41:20And the preseason. Like, I get it. It fell apart.
41:23But that, I think, is an illustration of, you know, Jeremiah Love's injured.
41:27But even if he was out there, he's not doing anything.
41:31What would he do? I mean, it's the Ashton Gentry thing right now.
41:35We talked about Gibbs, you know, making do with negative 24 yards before contact.
41:39You know how many running backs are doing that?
41:42Two. Maybe. Maybe. We know one. We know one.
41:45We know one. Maybe two. And, like, we hope Jeremiah Love is that.
41:49Right. Right. But, you know, Ash Gentry had similar hype coming out.
41:53And he faced a similar situation. He's still facing a similar situation, by the way.
41:57Yeah. I mean, you want to just talk about that game?
42:01Might as well. I mean, you spend a lot of money to bring in a center.
42:06Mm-hmm. Who's played well. Mm-hmm. But their guard situation is so bad that they're still one of the worst, if not the worst.
42:13I'd have to double-check the stats after this week.
42:16I can't imagine it got better. In terms of yards before contact per attempt, if you're looking at, you know, rushing success rate, they're awful this year.
42:24And teams know that they're so bad at running the ball that they face the highest rate of too high safeties of any team this week.
42:32Right? It's just like Kansas City last year, where teams were like, yeah, we don't care.
42:37Right. You know, you're not going to run it.
42:40Go ahead. Even if we're in too high. Right.
42:43Right. 0.2 yards before contact per carry. That's worse than it was two weeks ago.
42:48Man. Like, it didn't matter that they drafted a running back high.
42:52They haven't been able to build a full offensive line in two offseasons.
42:56Yeah. Not that they haven't tried. Yeah. It just hasn't worked.
42:59They brought in a center, but their guard situation might be the worst in the league.
43:04Yeah. And I think it's Fernando Mendoza time. I do.
43:07And the reason why is because you talked about the deficiencies on the offensive line really hampering things in the run game.
43:14It's also hampering things in the pass game. And I think Kirk Cousins has been everything that you have wanted him to
43:21be when you signed him to want to start the season.
43:24I mean, he has really kick-started things for the Raiders and given them hope.
43:29And it's okay. It's not just another, you know, sorry year with a first-year head coach.
43:34And, oh, you know, we're building kind of a thing.
43:37Like, they came out of the gate hot. And Kirk Cousins is a big reason why.
43:42I think the book is out on Kirk Cousins right now.
43:45And that he can be smart under pressure, but how good can he be under pressure, right?
43:51He's not terrible with turnovers and things like that.
43:54But when you look at under pressure in this game, 8 for 17, 94 yards.
43:58And he was – and when you talk about the blitz as well, 7 for 14 for 65 yards against the blitz.
44:05So, Cousins is just – if you can get after him, if you can rattle him, and if you can make him
44:12move around the pocket, he just doesn't have that mobility to make things happen outside of structure.
44:17Mendoza does. And so, I am very much a firm believer in the right time to start a young quarterback, a rookie
44:24quarterback, is when you feel as though they can go into a game, fail, but learn lessons, not lose confidence in who they are.
44:32And I don't worry about him losing confidence or being okay with failure.
44:36I don't either. And I feel as though seven weeks feels pretty appropriate of a runway for the number one overall pick in Fernando Mendoza.
44:44Of course, the Rams win this game, right? I think that we got to talk about the Rams side of things as well.
44:51Obviously huge for them. I think their season was over if they lose this game.
44:55They dropped it 2-5. Their season's completely over. Stafford goes 23 for 29, 195 yards, has three touchdowns, one interception.
45:02Puka Nakua did play in this game, ran the most routes by far of any receiver.
45:07Eight receptions on 10 targets, 68 receiving yards, and a touchdown.
45:10But I like that they got the tight ends more involved.
45:14Because going into this week, I felt like everything that the Rams were doing was way too Puka Nakua-focused.
45:20Not that you don't want to lean on your good players, but it was like Nakua or nothing.
45:25And it just felt as though that was part of the problem of making the offense look really, really difficult.
45:31Everybody on defense knew that as well. So obviously a huge game for the Rams.
45:36Needed to get this one for sure. But still need to continue to diversify the offense.
45:41But I do think that this is a step in the right direction.
45:45I want to talk about Niners-Falcons. I want to preface this.
45:49The Niners are a great team. Arguably the best team in the league going into this week.
45:54You can be the best team in the league and still lose if you turn it over four times in one game.
46:01And somehow they've missed four extra points in six weeks.
46:04Sloppy, sloppy football. I know they're banged up. But just to walk you through how in control they were of this game, even while being banged up.
46:12You look at four and a half minutes. I think it was 420 left in the first half.
46:18They're driving. They're inside the Atlanta 30-yard line. They fumble.
46:21Atlanta then mounts a 14-play drive for the rest of the half.
46:25Kick a field goal going into halftime. They receive the kickoff after halftime.
46:29They then mount another 10-play touchdown drive. For reasons we'll get into in a second.
46:34Because the Niners pass rush was not great in this game.
46:37Yeah. Six plays later, Brock throws a pick. Then they have another 11-play touchdown drive for Atlanta.
46:42In total, from four minutes left in the second quarter to the top of the fourth quarter.
46:48The play count. 49ers 6. Falcons 35. You can't win with that.
46:52Mighty difficult to. Doesn't matter how good you are in terms of EPA per play, success rate, explosive rate.
46:58You get six plays. They get 35. Five? You almost went full old man at the cloud with that one.
47:04You can do whatever you want with your EPA per play.
47:07Your fancy numbers. I'm with you, though. No, you said a stat, though, that really sticks out to me.
47:13And that is the fact that the 49ers only had 17.1% of a pressure rate on Michael Penix.
47:19The book is out on Michael Penix right now.
47:22Pressure him. Pressure him. And that is when he plays his worst.
47:25They blitzed on 34.3% of their defensive plays in this game.
47:29And they still only got 17.1% pressure. Now, I know that Nick Bosa's been out and he's been out for a little bit.
47:36But, man, we had the same conversations about the Niners defensive line last year.
47:40Yep. They can't get after the quarterback. They cannot do it.
47:44And they drafted some guys who you have promised to get after the quarterback.
47:48Helping. Yeah, like Romelo Hite and Grayson Halden and those guys, obviously.
47:52But they're young. They're only going to give you that in flashes.
47:56They're not going to be consistent. So, that's something to worry about with this Niners team.
48:01I think that that is a tangible takeaway here.
48:04If I'm the Niners, I am calling the Colts right now and saying, what do I got to do to get DeForest Buckner?
48:11Oh, yeah. Bring them home. Bring them home. They need something.
48:14Anything. Yeah. It's a good poll. Literally anything. Good poll.
48:17Speaking of the Colts. Speaking of the Colts. Oh, man.
48:20Brian Flores. You want to talk about a team that can get pressure?
48:25You psychopath. 85.2% blitz rate. Highest in the NGS era.
48:28He's just working his way up to 100%. We're going to get there.
48:32He is. Yeah. Somebody's going to dare him that one time.
48:35This is going to happen. Whether it's this season or maybe next season or something.
48:40Maybe he'll be out with some buddies at the Combine.
48:43After one event today, you're just having a good time.
48:46He's going to be like, what are you scared for?
48:49Why haven't you had 100% game? And he just goes home that night and he just goes.
48:55Just scribbling in his notebook. I'll show them. I mean, 85.2% is truly unbelievable.
48:59And again, you talk about what's the book on somebody pressures Daniel Jones.
49:03And go, we're going to blitz the crap out of you the entire game.
49:07And if you beat us, hat tip to you.
49:10But you're going to run through fire to get there.
49:13And I think that no one has been able to handle the heat that Flores has thrown at them with this fire.
49:20Fun fact for the audience at home. The number of dropbacks in this game that Daniel Jones had that were not against a blitz was four.
49:28Four dropbacks the entire game. That weren't blitzed. He went two of four for seven yards.
49:33I think because he was in shock. Yeah. Yeah.
49:36Probably didn't know what to do. It's 1.8 yards per attempt.
49:40He actually had 5.6 yards per attempt against the blitz.
49:431.8 not. Because I think he was just confused why there were bodies down the field.
49:48Right. Yeah. They weren't in his face. Yeah. I have run out of superlatives for Brian Flores.
49:53Nobody else is doing it like him. No. The average blitz rate is less than half of what he did in this game.
50:00That's nuts. That's a great way to quantify it.
50:03Hell, it's less than half of his average for the season.
50:07I'm not kidding. That's a real stat. We'll throw it up on screen.
50:11His average blitz rate is like 70-something percent. Yeah.
50:13And the average blitz rate across the NFL is in the low 30s.
50:17Yeah. Yeah. There is nobody else like him. And, you know, when Kyler, like, now we could throw up the Kyler passing map, by the way.
50:26Yeah. Because that's my takeaway here. Just to touch on the Vikings.
50:29Obviously, they're having a fantastic start to the season.
50:32I don't want to take anything away from them.
50:35But it still looks tough on offense. And Kyler just has not been good enough.
50:40In this game, 58.3% completion percentage. When Kyler was not blitzed in this game, he was 9 for 16 for 90 yards
50:47and a negative 18.3% completion percentage over expected. You see the passing chart that we threw up on the screen?
50:53There is nothing over the middle of the field.
50:56I mean, there is one pass close to where the hash marks is, and that is absolutely it.
51:01So, the tangible takeaways here for me, obviously the Colts, their season is done.
51:06I think that we already know that. But for the Vikings, yeah, the record looks nice.
51:11You pop open the hood and you go, eee.
51:13I think you pop open the hood and Brian Flores punches you in the face.
51:18I guess. I guess that's what it is. I guess that's just going to, if they're going to have success, that's going to be what it is.
51:27You want to talk about the Titans and the Browns?
51:30Thriller. We knew it was going to happen eventually.
51:33Casey Concepcion. 4.6 yards per route run in this game.
51:36I didn't even know that. Crazy. You're saying that to me for the first time.
51:40Absolutely disgusting. Had 69 yards just on crossing routes and slants.
51:44He was eating over the middle. He's great after the catch.
51:47He's great on screens. Gave him a couple carries.
51:50Got 23 yards on rushes in this game. This was the Casey Concepcion game.
51:54A lot of people have been talking about Denzel Boston, as they should.
51:59It's been great. Right. But they did draft Casey first.
52:02I think this game showed what they were envisioning.
52:04Yeah. No, he was great in this game. Needed him to obviously win this one.
52:09For the Titans, man, when I watch Cam Warden, especially in this game, it makes me feel as though the game plan,
52:16the game script, they just don't trust him. And I know that they're not going to say that.
52:22But when you look at Warden in this game, they go up 14-0 early in this contest.
52:27Cam, 11 for 18 for just 87 passing yards in the first three quarters of this game.
52:32I mean, low average depth of target stuff. I mean, it's just they're not putting their foot on the gas pedal at all.
52:40And to me, it was a major reason why they let up the 14-point lead that they had early on.
52:46And they don't win this game. He goes 9 for 13 in the fourth quarter.
52:50So he has 18 dropbacks and 11 completions in the first three quarters.
52:55He had nine completions in the fourth quarter. So it's like, oh, shoot, we got to really play now?
53:01You should have been playing the first three quarters.
53:03And I get it. Like, they're up. They're trying to conserve things.
53:07They're trying to run the football. Like, I understand it.
53:10But to me, it's just too inconsistent with him.
53:1362.5% completion percentage, negative 2.3% completion percentage over expected.
53:16And that's with no blitz. Again, you've got to be able to perform better than that.
53:21Especially when a team spots you 14 points in a game that you knew was going to be a tight contest anyways.
53:28Anytime you can get two touchdowns, man, I just...
53:31It parked the bus. Yeah. I just... And I just hate that strategy.
53:35Especially when you have a gunslinger quarterback like Cam Ward.
53:38You've got to let him let it fly. And if he isn't able to do that, then, man, I think that we
53:45got bigger worries when it comes down. At least we will find out if he can't.
53:50Right. Yeah. Right. That's the goal for the season.
53:52Find out what you got. Yeah. Miami and the Jets, two other teams, just trying to find out what they got.
53:59Dolphins, dub? They ran the ball really well. They did?
54:02Yeah. I think their run rate was 60-something percent in this game off the top of my head.
54:08Jets had an 18.2% missed tackle percentage that would be the worst in the NFL compared to league averages.
54:14Yikes. Not good. And it was another week where Aaron Glenn was kind of talking about end-of-game situations and using his timeout and getting a stop.
54:22And, like, his explanation didn't make sense. Like, he was talking about, like, well, we didn't want to use our timeouts because of this or whatever.
54:30And it was like, no, no, no. You needed to use those to get the ball back.
54:35And he kind of just didn't understand that there.
54:38And so I think that Aaron Glenn, I mean, you go back to his time when he was a defensive coordinator at the Lions, man.
54:46They were shutting people down. It was one of the best defenses in the NFL.
54:51And I just feel as though a lot of those head coaching decisions in the moment, he's not making the correct decisions.
54:58And it's hard. It's bang-bang stuff. Like, I get it.
55:01You know, it's so much easier to criticize here on this side of things.
55:05I get it. I'm not trying to be overly harsh about this.
55:09But you are the head coach. You've got to be able to get it right.
55:13You've got to win in the margins. And in the margins for being a head coach or making the right decisions with
55:20timeouts, with game management, with things like that. And it was just another week where I felt like Aaron Glenn fell short.
55:27Or you need somebody on your staff. Whose only job is to do that.
55:32Right. Maybe they have somebody. It's not working. Whatever it is.
55:35Also want to shout out the Dolphins. I mentioned earlier the Raiders' 28% run rate against 2i.
55:40Because they knew they couldn't. Dolphins, 51.7% run rate against 2i in this game.
55:45Because they knew it was their only shot. Right.
55:48And they were really good at doing it. Ollie Gordon, over 100 yards in this game.
55:53Yeah. Dark Horse in this game. Yeah. That was really the only way I thought they were going to do it.
55:59Is that they played keep away. Yeah. And they did.
56:02They won time of possession. They ran the ball a ton.
56:06And they played the only brand of football that I think they can to win this year.
56:11To win. And they did. Nothing against Malik, by the way.
56:15No, but it hasn't been good enough before this point.
56:18And maybe this is more of an off-season thing.
56:20I don't know how much of that is because of the supporting cast and how young it is.
56:26Versus how much of that is because of Malik.
56:29Almost half their starters are rookies. Yeah. It's always going to be a learning year anyways.
56:34Sure. I'm with you. The only way a young team that has a talent deficiency is going to win is by just not giving you the ball.
56:42Yes. Yes. And they did that. Right. And they won.
56:45And they're not going to be winless this year.
56:48Yeah. And I think for Dolphins fans, that's a relief.
56:51That's a good thing. Last game here. Bengals and Ravens.
56:55Yep. Pay Lamar whatever he wants. Don't care. Don't care whatever the number is.
56:59I don't care how many zeros. Yeah. Whatever. And I don't even think Huntley plays poorly.
57:04No. But the difference is so. Very clearly, there's a major difference here.
57:08Especially for, what was it, 13-0 at half? And then the final score of the game is 35-13.
57:14I mean, that's one quarterback that has the ability to just absolutely turn it on in Joe Burrow in the second half.
57:21And he was unbelievable. Burrow, in that first half, he's 6-12, 47 passing yards, 58.7 quarterback rating.
57:26Excuse me. Second half, he goes 16-18, 249, four touchdowns, and a perfect 158.3.
57:30He's got a good one. In the second half.
57:33He carved up single high. He carved up cover three.
57:36But specifically, I love the way that they were running things out of 12 personnel in the second half.
57:42And if you look at the first half of this game, five passing yards went in 12 personnel in the first half.
57:49Second half, 122 passing yards with three touchdowns coming from that alignment.
57:53Wow. So, leaning into having more tight ends on the field, using that to your advantage, it was a really nice, like,
58:00hey, this didn't really work in the first half.
58:02But we feel like we see this advantage here, especially in the red zone.
58:07And boy, did they ever. I thought it was a really great adjustment from them when they started to get hot and
58:14to keep feeding into that in this game. And they were a really good 12 personnel team last year, too.
58:20Mm-hmm. Right? Yeah. Drew Sample is their other tight end.
58:23He was also somebody that lined up at the backfield a lot.
58:27Yep. Blocker for them. Like, that was kind of their comfort food last year.
58:31Yeah. Makes sense. You know, when I talk about Tyler Huntley and Lamar, there's concerns about, okay, is Lamar going to be
58:38able to move like Lamar should be able to move?
58:41Right. Like, are you used to seeing Lamar move?
58:44Right. To me, that's secondary to the fact that Lamar just attacks down the field.
58:49Mm-hmm. Like, we can get something other than just, Zay Flowers, please save us after the catch.
58:54Zay had nine of his 11 targets under 10 air yards.
58:58He had 103 yards after the catch, including plus 63 yards after the catch.
59:02What a player, man. Those are career highs. Yeah, I mean.
59:05This is the most work he's ever done after the catch, and he's done a lot of work after the catch in his career so far.
59:14Right. But it's because Tyler Huntley, his air yards per attempt is 6.1.
59:18Mm-hmm. That'd be 32 out of 33 qualifying quarterbacks.
59:20Meanwhile, Lamar is 10.2. That's first. He attacks down the field.
59:24And, yeah, he uses Zay in his after-the-catch ability as well.
59:27Like, you saw that in the Colts game. Right.
59:30In the first week. But he also throws the ball down the field.
59:34He threatens every blade of grass. Whether he can be hypermobile or not, like, people forget how gifted of a passer he is.
59:41Especially as a deep ball thrower. Yep. They don't have that.
59:45They're a completely one-dimensional offense. This is also, side note, this is the first year where Derrick Henry doesn't look the same.
59:52No. He looks like he's slowing down a little bit.
59:55A little bit. I didn't think it was possible.
59:58A little bit. It took a while. Now, I think the last couple of games he's been keyed in on, right?
60:04Because they don't have Lamar. But I think it ultimately just comes down to, I can't judge what this Ravens team is
60:11going to be this year until Lamar gets out there.
60:14And it felt like he was going to play this week.
60:18So, I got to feel like he's pretty confident to play in future weeks.
60:22Final thoughts on Week 7? So, now that the Bengals won this game, their playoff probability is really high.
60:28And I wonder if they're going to snoop around Jonathan Taylor.
60:31Now that they can really hit the gas pedal and go for it.
60:35That's what I'm saying. Bring in another super weapon.
60:38You got Joe. You got Jamar. You got T.
60:41You got Taylor. I don't like it. Why not?
60:44I like it. If I had to take away on Week 7, it's, you know, every time you've ever heard somebody say,
60:51like, oh, well, when they rush, you know, 25 times, they're 10-0.
60:55Well, obviously, that was correct. No context needed. Big number good.
60:58Yeah, just hand the ball off 25 times for the first, you know, 25 plays of the game.
61:04And then you'll win. And then it doesn't really matter what you do after that.
61:08Establish the run. It still matters. Yeah. Obviously, this is a, it's been a fun season all around.
61:14We've talked about the run game mattering, both when it's good for you and when it's bad.
61:19We've talked about special teams. And that means it's just going to be an aerial onslaught for the second.
