A.J. Brown

NegativeRole23:10

A.J. Brown returned last week after missing time and looked a little rusty. The source notes that Drake May played most of the season without him, and as Brown works himself back into form, May should continue to ascend.

Insight page

Aaron Rodgers

PositiveProjection38:06

Aaron Rodgers engineered an overtime win against Tampa and is suiting up in Paris for the first time in his NFL career. The source reports he leads the league in completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns. The Steelers are feeling very good about their team, with owner Art Rooney saying 'pretty good' when asked about the team. Rodgers has come on very strong, especially in recent weeks, and the Steelers' offense has really started to come around with him and running back Jalen Warren.

Insight page

Baker Mayfield

PositiveInjury7:07

Mayfield practiced in full capacity for the first time since dislocating his thumb in week three, wearing a glove throughout practice and reporting it felt good; he is on track for a three-week recovery timeline (missed three games) and is likely to be available to start Sunday against Carolina, though the Bucs will monitor how his thumb responds over the next two days of practice to ensure no swelling or pain issues emerge.

Insight page

Bo Nix

NegativeProjection37:03

Bo Nix has struggled to throw down the field this year. In three of the Broncos' four wins, he has had less than 200 yards passing. The source indicates the Broncos want more from Nix and are trying different play calls and terminology to get him to let it rip from time to time, though he is playing winning football.

Insight page

Caleb Williams

PositiveInjury21:48

The source reports Williams was not listed on the injury report after returning from a hamstring injury, which is described as an encouraging sign. He missed three games, returned last week against Atlanta, threw for over 300 yards, and played very well. The Bears factored the short week against New England into their decision to bring him back, and he is expected to start and play the full game Thursday night against the Patriots.

Insight page

Dak Prescott

NegativeProjection30:18

Dak Prescott has just one passing touchdown in each of his last four games. The source notes the Cowboys' potent offense has been stifled in recent weeks, and Jerry Jones acknowledged frustration with the team's performance, saying they are better than their current record and can improve in areas that have frustrated them, especially last week.

Insight page

Deshaun Watson

PositiveProjection43:03

The source notes that Deshaun Watson is playing at a level that would warrant an extension; despite the Browns' initial "big swing and a miss" characterization, Watson's current performance has made the quarterback situation complicated in a positive way, with the team hoping everything keeps moving in the right direction with Watson and the offense as they pursue a playoff berth.

Insight page

Drake Maye

PositiveProjection22:42

The source reports May rebounded from an early-season slump where he was pressing and making poor decisions. In his first three games, the Patriots scored a high of 20 points; in the last three games, they scored 29, 45, and 26 points. The source cautions not to read too much into his completion percentage, which remains lower than last year, but notes he played most of the season without A.J. Brown, who returned last week. As Brown works back into form, the source expects May to continue ascending.

Insight page

J.J. McCarthy

PositiveRole15:42

McCarthy has been named the Giants' starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, replacing Jameis Winston; he views this as an opportunity to resuscitate his career after his Minnesota stint, believing he is in better shape to succeed with the Giants due to increased experience and the team's plan to deploy an offense built around his athleticism and legs that was previously shelved for Winston, which should also benefit the struggling running backs.

Insight page

Jalen Hurts

NegativeInjury0:30

Hurts will miss the remainder of the season after blood clots were discovered in his lungs; the NFLPA has called for an independent investigation into his medical care, citing concerns that the NFL allowed him to play with a superficial blood clot and that the decision was made too quickly, though the NFL maintains its chief medical officer and team doctors followed proper protocols and that the NFLPA was informed throughout the process.

Insight page

Jaylen Warren

PositiveRole39:10

Jalen Warren has been part of the Steelers' running attack that has really started to come around as an offense. The source notes the Steelers have good wide receivers, though they are banged up with only three healthy receivers on the roster, but the running game with Warren is contributing to the offense coming together nicely.

Insight page

Josh Jacobs

PositiveRole25:30

Josh Jacobs is eligible to return this week for the Packers after being taken off the commissioner's exempt list following a six-game suspension for personal conduct policy violations. The source reports he is back in the facility, back at practice, and is expected to play Sunday against the Detroit Lions. He had been staying in shape during his suspension. The league reserved the right to review any additional evidence that surfaces, but for now he is cleared to play. The Packers have the NFL's worst rush offense, averaging under 60 yards per game without him.

Insight page

Kenneth Walker III

PositiveBreakout36:26

Kenneth Walker is returning to Seattle to face the Seahawks, the team where he made his name. The source describes him as having had a huge start to the season and being a potential MVP candidate. When asked how he feels about returning, players said he does not show any emotion about it, even though it is a huge opportunity to show what the Seahawks missed when they let him walk.

Insight page

Kyren Williams

PositiveUsage21:20

Williams leads all running backs in receptions through the first six games of the season and has proven to be a valuable pass-catcher in the Rams' offense; he grew up playing receiver and loves how his role has evolved to allow him to do both, and his confidence as a pass catcher has enabled him to develop a deeper relationship with Matthew Stafford and ask him about play-calling, positioning him as a key target to help offset the loss of Devontae Adams.

Insight page

Lamar Jackson

NegativeInjury5:09

Jackson has been out since spraining his ankle in week four against the Titans and practiced in limited fashion this week with a noticeable limp; he will not return to the field until he personally signs off on being 100% healthy, and despite expectations he would play against the Bengals this week, he remains unlikely to play as he continues to rehab under defensive coordinator Jesse Minter with increased intensity compared to previous years.

Insight page

Mike Evans

NegativeInjury24:42

Mike Evans left Monday Night Football with an Achilles tendonitis issue, the same injury Christian McCaffrey battled a couple of years ago, which was week-to-week at times. Evans did not practice Wednesday. The 49ers have a bye coming up after this game, but the source indicates the team is not necessarily planning to rest him through both; instead, they are assessing whether he can play this week. The source notes Evans is tough and competitive, so if he has an opening to play, he will, but the team must see how he manages the rest of the week and if he can get game-ready for Sunday.

Insight page

Rashee Rice

NegativeInjury35:15

Rasheed Rice, wide receiver for the Chiefs, is dealing with a hamstring injury and is in a questionable place regarding his availability this week. The source reports the team is more encouraged about Rice probably being able to get there because he is making good strides, but they need to see how things go this week.

Insight page

Sam LaPorta

NegativeValue28:18

Sam LaPorte expressed frustration over his contract situation with the Lions, telling Barstool Sports that he is disappointed about not being paid fairly despite bearing the risk of injury and breaking his back for the team last year. He said he will continue to play professionally but indicated that if he does not get paid by the Lions, he will leave in free agency to get paid elsewhere. The source notes LaPorte and the Lions have broken off contract talks; he opted to bet on himself. If he continues producing and stays healthy, he could become a $20 million-a-year tight end in free agency.

0:08Tonight on The Insiders, the NFLPA wants an investigation into Jalen Hurts' medical situation.
0:12Lamar Jackson is back on the field in limited fashion.
0:15And Baker Mayfield ahead of schedule back at practice.
0:18Can he suit up Sunday to get the Bucs back on track?
0:22Welcome to The Insiders presented by Progressive Insurance. Mike Garofalo, Judy Battista, Adam Schefter, and I am Sarah Walsh with you as week seven is underway.
0:30And questions concerning the handling of Jalen Hurts continue days after learning that he will miss the remainder of the season after
0:37blood clots were discovered in his lungs. Today at the owners meetings in New York, Roger Goodell was asked his thoughts regarding the NFLPA calling for an investigation.
0:45Well, we welcome that. That's part of our processes.
0:48That's fine. We have chief, our chief medical officer has been through the protocols that were followed.
0:53So we welcome that. If that's what they do, they have that right.
0:57Well, I'm not sure how much international travel had to do with this in that context.
1:02That's maybe for medical professionals to tell us if that had any impact.
1:06I haven't heard that to date. Obviously, there was a medical evaluation.
1:10And I think our protocols were incredibly good there.
1:13The most important thing here is Jalen's health, ultimately, and the future.
1:16He's a wonderful young man and not just a great player, but he's someone we all care deeply about.
1:22So I'm more worried about his health, ultimately, but the protocols were followed.
1:26Our process is to make sure that's the case, and our chief medical officer has gone through that.
1:32So we're comfortable with what we've seen and the protocols have happened.
1:36When you get into medical evaluations, you see different people have different opinions on that.
1:40You all are reporting different people are making those evaluations without even seeing the player or without even seeing the medical records.
1:47And I think that's important to understand we have the greatest medical advisors and people that are working on the health of our players.
1:55Mike, what more can you tell us about how all of this is unfolding?
1:59Sarah, the NFL saying that they will welcome the investigation.
2:02Roger Goodell saying it's part of the process. That's part of the collective bargaining agreement where the sides can appoint independent doctors that will then review the situation.
2:11And within 60 days of being selected, quote their recommendations as to what steps shall be taken to address and correct any
2:17issues shall be acted upon by the party. So they are in the process now of communicating between the sides to figure
2:24out how this is going to go about. And then we'll have the process that will take, as you see right there, within a couple of months.
2:33A standard concussion protocol review usually takes a couple of weeks.
2:36So the NFL PAs sitting there and hearing the NFL say yesterday and then again today from Roger Goodell as well that
2:43they believe that their doctors and the doctors that they helped arrange acted accordingly in their decision to allow Jalen Hurts to play with a superficial blood clot.
2:51And the PAs saying, well, that was too much.
2:54That was too quick. We're going to do a full review here.
2:58So that's where we are in this one. So this will take some time to get to the bottom of everything here.
3:05And the NFL extremely confident, both in what they said yesterday and today, that that review will find that their doctors acted accordingly.
3:12We shall see. And those neutral doctors who will who will take part in this investigation, they will have access to the team doctors.
3:19They will also have access to the medical records and they may or may not have access to Jalen Hurts himself.
3:26This is the strange dynamic in place. And this is what when you talk to sports lawyers, they say this could be a potential hurdle in this investigation.
3:35The agent, Nicole Lynn, Jalen Hurts' agent, has been releasing statements in concert with the Philadelphia Eagles, which certainly indicates that they
3:41are on the same page, that they are satisfied with the care he has received.
3:46So that would suggest that perhaps Jalen Hurts doesn't really feel like this needs to be investigated.
3:51He's pleased with the care he has received. That's a potential hurdle in the investigation, because certainly the physicians who are going
3:58to do this review would want to talk to Jalen Hurts.
4:01And the question then becomes, to what extent will he want to cooperate?
4:05How candid will he be about the care he received and what he thinks about the care he received?
4:11So that is a potential hurdle. But all of this is prescribed in the CBA and they will follow it.
4:18And again, in about two months, they will have to produce a report, Adam.
4:22Yeah, Judy. And that's the whole thing. You mentioned the appointed physicians to independent physicians.
4:27They obviously have 60 days to appoint those physicians.
4:29Those physicians then would have 60 days to issue their report.
4:33But we go back to what the NFL has said all along, that the chief medical officer, Dr.
4:38Alan Sills, was in contact with the NFLPA before they brought Jalen Hurts to the hospital in London.
4:44They told the NFLPA exactly what was going on.
4:47The NFLPA knew of all the treatment that was occurring with Jalen Hurts.
4:51And so the NFLPA is calling for that independent investigation that the CBA allows them for.
4:56But obviously there are two different versions here about what may have transpired here in recent days.
5:01And then, of course, Adam, the Eagles are hosting the Cowboys on Monday night.
5:05All eyes on the potential return this week for another quarterback.
5:09Lamar Jackson has been out since spraining his ankle week four against the Titans.
5:13We've got an AFC North showdown with the Bengals looming.
5:16The AFC North has three teams, four and two records, including those Ravens.
5:20The Bengals at three and two. Adam, what can you tell us about the chances that we are going to see Lamar on Sunday?
5:28Sarah, I think a couple of weeks ago there were people who felt like Lamar was going to play in that game
5:34against the Atlanta Falcons, and he didn't. And there were people who felt like he was going to play in this past
5:41game against the Cleveland Browns, and he didn't. And there were people who felt like he would play this upcoming week against the Bengals.
5:49Tell me when this sounds familiar. And when practice started today, Lamar was not out there.
5:54Now, he did wind up practicing in a limited fashion.
5:57But the way it was explained to me, there was a limp in his step.
6:01He does not seem to be fully right. And Lamar Jackson is not going to be out on the practice field until
6:08Lamar Jackson signs off on being on the playing field.
6:11So until he feels like he's 100% and he tells everybody he feels like 100%, we won't see Lamar.
6:17That could be this week. It could be next week.
6:20But I think there are people who thought it would be already, and it hasn't happened.
6:25Listen, we were just talking about it. So it's a much different subject with Jalen Hurts with the blood clots versus a sprained ankle here.
6:33But there is patient autonomy, Adam. And what you're saying there is that Lamar Jackson has a say in this.
6:39And the NFL has been clear about this as well because Jalen Hurts played with a superficial blood clot.
6:45They're saying, hey, the patient has a say in the matter as well.
6:49Well, this is a much different, much less serious situation, but still a player health situation in which Lamar Jackson is clearly having his say.
6:57And he's had it in the past. And I have heard that this year with him and Jesse Minter and the way
7:03that he's locked in, the relationship, that he is rehabbing and pushing a lot harder than maybe he would have in previous years.
7:11But he's still not on the field. And he's still of the mentality of, as Adam described it, Dr.
7:16Lamar Jackson is going to sign off when player Lamar Jackson is ready to go.
7:21Meanwhile, in the NFC South, everyone is trying to catch the Panthers, including a Bucs team visiting Carolina on Sunday.
7:27Baker Mayfield practiced in what the Bucs are calling full capacity for the first time today since dislocating that thumb in week three against the Vikings.
7:35Todd Bowles not ready to make any decisions yet.
7:38I think he's coming along fine. I think once he got warmed up and started looking pretty good, you know, as practice went on.
7:46So, you know, we'll continue to monitor and see how he goes through the week.
7:50He started the practice with a glove. Did that stay on the entire practice today?
7:55Yes, it did. How did he feel? Did he give you any feedback in terms of how he felt throwing the ball with the glove?
8:03He said it felt good. I mean, he's done it one time before, so he said it felt okay.
8:08How much of a test will tomorrow be? Because, obviously, he went through a football practice where he's having to grip the
8:15ball, and it's not like he's just having to do that for, you know.
8:20We've got to see how he feels first, and, you know, then we'll go through that as we get through tomorrow and Friday.
8:27We've got to see how he comes out of it, and after a day, how the thumb responds.
8:32How were you able to split the reps between he and Jalen?
8:36Each got to get mental reps sometimes. Some got to get physical reps.
8:40I mean, they both understand the game plan, and they're both ready to play.
8:44How important, even if you don't make the decision publicly, how important is it to kind of have a decision in your
8:51mind in terms of game planning and preparation for Sunday?
8:54Well, it's extremely important. I mean, you've got to have the quarterback get their mental reps in play, and everybody's got to
9:01understand who's on the center and what kind of game plan we have.
9:05So, Judy, the Bucs got a glimpse of Baker today.
9:08What are you hearing about their confidence that he can return on Sunday?
9:12Well, first of all, him being a full participant in practice is obviously a very good indication that he could be available.
9:19On Sunday. But you heard Todd Bowles reference this.
9:22They need to see more now. And speaking to folks down there, first of all, he looked good in the practice.
9:28He did wear the glove throughout. That obviously is supposed to help with the grip, which is what the concern is with the dislocated thumb.
9:36Obviously, he needs to be able to grip the football.
9:39He needs to be able to spin it. So what they are concerned with now is he went through a full day of practice.
9:47How's the thumb going to respond? Is it going to swell up?
9:50Is he going to be in agonizing pain when he wakes up tomorrow?
9:54How will it respond? And then if he can practice tomorrow and then if he can practice Friday again, how does the thumb respond?
10:02How does it feel? Can he keep getting through practices?
10:05Certainly, it is a very good sign. And really, he is right on track.
10:09This was supposed to be a three-week injury. He missed three games.
10:13So he is right on track to potentially start this Sunday.
10:16And, Judy, typically Baker will talk on a Wednesday.
10:19That's when they always have the quarterbacks talk. The Bucs push that back to tomorrow to give him more time so that
10:26they can figure out what they're doing. But they do believe that he is probably going to be talking tomorrow.
10:32Judy, thanks. Here's a look at some other notable injuries that we are tracking this week.
10:37Obviously, Saquon Barkley at the top of that list.
10:40In Nashville, Robert Sala spoke today for the first time about Jordan Elliott, who the Titans released on Tuesday.
10:46That was after an altercation with a teammate had the defensive lineman trying to retrieve a gun from his car.
10:52Here's Sala. I will stand on the table for Jordan's character.
10:55Unfortunately, rules are rules with regards to guns on property.
10:58And sometimes it's far greater than the knee-jerk reaction of kicking somebody and kicking somebody when they're down.
11:04My message to 31 other teams would be if you need a hell of a run-stopping de-tackle that can help you on
11:11a playoff run, give me a call. I'll tell you everything you need to know about him.
11:16He's a good man. Made a terrible – had a terrible lapse in judgment that I recognize as a call for help more than a criminal act.
11:24And it's unfortunate the way it went down. But as far as Jordan's concerned and the locker room and all that, I
11:31think the locker room and Jordan, I think people see it differently here than the knee-jerk reaction of the world.
11:37Mike, this is obviously a story that calls for more context.
11:41The Titans were coming off their first win of the season.
11:44What happened there in Nashville? This is extremely polarizing, Sarah, for Robert Sala's comments and the reaction to them and folks saying,
11:51Oh, he needs help, but he brought a gun that could have endangered a bunch of other people.
11:57Like, he should never be allowed in an NFL facility ever again.
12:00And then you had folks on the other side who said, This is a coach who is understanding his players and understanding his people.
12:08And though the young man made a mistake by going to his car to get the gun, which shouldn't have been there
12:15in the first place and, from my understanding, never left his parking spot.
12:19It was right there in that area and never made it that way.
12:23And credit to John Franklin Myers, the veteran who had been with Sala before when he played for the Jets, to de-escalate
12:29the situation because maybe this could have gone a different way if not for Franklin Myers.
12:34So good on him. But this is Sala saying that the league has done a good job and the team has done a good job.
12:42There are consequences for action, but they have done a good job of talking to the player involved here, Jordan Elliott, and
12:49working on the mental health part of this. There's an initiative.
12:52The NFL has an initiative. The NFL teams have individual mental health initiatives.
12:56We wear the pins, the shirts, and all these initiatives that the league has.
13:01Well, Robert Sala trying to put it in action here and making sure that Jordan Elliott knows, despite the fact that he
13:08made a mistake and he won't be a Titan moving forward, his career's not over and his life is not over, Adam.
13:14And I think it's a really good message that, again, some people are just not going to be with, but a lot
13:21of people are, and I appreciate what Sala's trying to do here.
13:25Well, it was a thoughtful answer that the Titans head coach Robert Sala gave.
13:29But there also are rules about having guns in the facility.
13:33There are rules about having guns in society. And in this particular case, NFL rules state you cannot have a gun at a training facility.
13:40You cannot have a gun at a stadium. You cannot have a gun at your house.
13:45Those are the NFL rules. And in this particular case, the Titans made the decision to move on.
13:51In a separate incident this past week, the Buffalo Bills had a second defensive back suspended for spitting during the course of a game against the Raiders.
13:59So there were not one spitters. There were two spitters.
14:02And in this particular case, Sam Franklin Jr. denied that he spit.
14:06He has appealed. C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the other Buffalo safety who also was suspended for spitting at Brock Bowers.
14:12He also is appealing. Now, the Bills are on their bye week.
14:15Usually we get the results of these appeals right away.
14:18But this hasn't moved as quickly as some of these other appeals because of the bye.
14:23And that's the reason that the suspension came down today.
14:26The news of this incident surfaced in the league later.
14:30The Bills are on the bye. They could suspend the player one game today.
14:34And we'll see what both appeals hold. Adam, thank you.
14:37From injuries to the results, things have not gone according to plan for the Rams.
14:42Why they believe the turnaround is coming. And can J.J.
14:45McCarthy resurrect his NFL career in a New York minute?
14:48Change is underway for the Giants at quarterback. Football's back.
14:51Hey, it's Drew Franklin from NFL Cover Zero. Enjoy the NFL season while listening to NFL Cover Zero.
14:56We have storylines, predictions, and lots of silliness. Here's what you can expect from the podcast in our second season.
15:03When you meet people and you say your job's a sports announcer, it's always interesting to see what the first thing they say is.
15:10I did have one of the more difficult questions, though.
15:13He sits next to me and he sees I'm on my computer.
15:17And he goes, big sports fan. And I was like, yeah, actually.
15:21And he goes, what do you think about my Jaguars this year?
15:24I realized, like, no one's ever asked me that question ever about anything.
15:28And I was like, do you have all? Listen to NFL Cover Zero on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
15:36Well, the Giants have a bye next week. They could have waited to make a quarterback change after it.
15:42Instead, John Harbaugh decided that the J.J. McCarthy era in New York is going to start now.
15:47Just being around a new group of guys, new system, new coaching staff, just a new culture.
15:53Everything about this place, you know, it feels very fitting for me.
15:56You know, just being, you know, in a makeshift locker room, being in this system where, you know, they use the quarterback's legs and a multitude of things.
16:05But the personalities, the culture of just, you know, grinding every single day to get better and everyone helping each other to, you know, progress towards one goal.
16:14It's been fantastic. You know, a lot of successful buildings have similar qualities.
16:18And this building definitely has that. But it's got its own little makeshift of New York Giant football.
16:23Well, despite losing Jackson Dart in Week 2, the Giants sit atop the NFC East standings.
16:28Only the Cowboys have had their QB1 start every single game this year in that division.
16:33The Giants on their third starting quarterback seven weeks into the season.
16:37Jordan Renan was at practice today with the Giants, and he has more.
16:41Thanks, Sarah. The Giants officially made the move from Jameis Winston to J.J.
16:45McCarthy as their starting quarterback. Head coach John Harbaugh said it's going to be for the foreseeable future.
16:50He thought that this was the right time to make the move.
16:54And as a matter of fact, didn't make any grand announcement to the team.
16:58And some players even told me they didn't even realize they had switched quarterbacks until they started going through the game plan.
17:05As for McCarthy, this is a chance to resuscitate his career.
17:09He feels he's in better shape to succeed than he was in Minnesota because experience does wonders.
17:14As for the Giants, they're hoping that the change does wonders for their running game.
17:19They developed an offense for Jackson Dart that several sources told me they had to put on the back burner when Winston became the starting quarterback.
17:27This now gives them a chance to pull it out and use it using McCarthy's athleticism and legs.
17:32They also hope it could benefit their running backs who struggled greatly in recent weeks.
17:37Back to you, Sarah. All right. It's Giants and Texans this week.
17:41Meanwhile, the Rams have been decimated on the injury front, losing some of their biggest names, and they're losing them for significant time.
17:48They're going to visit the Raiders this week. The Rams have dropped two in a row.
17:53They're sitting at the bottom of the NFC West at two and four, a position that no one expected them to be in coming into this season.
18:01I got Taylor Bishotti with me again. And, Taylor, I feel like this is deja vu because a week ago we were
18:08here, and I was like, what is it like out there when you were out there at practice?
18:13They're going to get this thing turned around, and then it's another loss.
18:17So I ask you again a week later, I mean, what is the mood like for the Rams?
18:23They believe that they can turn it around. They've been here before, and they've turned it around, so they believe that it is still very possible for them.
18:32Quentin Lake said on Monday in 2024, they started the season off one and four, went on to win the division.
18:38In 2023, they started three and six and still made the playoffs.
18:42Now, the difference between those two instances and now is that those turnarounds happened after their bye.
18:47This year, they can't afford to wait that long.
18:50Their bye doesn't come until week 11. Three of their next four games are on the road, but it's a more favorable
18:57stretch of the schedule, and it's an opportunity to get to six and four entering the bye, but that means if they
19:04want to do that, they're going to have to clean up the penalties, the turnovers, and address the special teams, which is
19:10a unit that ranks as the least efficient in the NFL.
19:14They believe a turnaround is very possible, but the window is closing, and they need to start winning now.
19:20Well, the window is closing, and then, of course, you have that list that we just put up of the injuries.
19:26Among the guys on that list, Devontae Adams, and I think the thing that hurts so much is it's not like a
19:33one-week sort of absence for Devontae in particular. Talking about six to ten weeks there, so when it comes to this aerial
19:40attack, now you've lost Devontae Adams for a significant chunk.
19:43Where do they turn to to supplant the fact that he's not going to be there?
19:48And keep in mind, they've already been pretty anemic at receiver, trying to find other ways to implement tight ends, running backs,
19:55and speaking of running backs, Kyron Williams, while he's not going to replace Devontae Adams, he is a receiver who he is
20:01a running back who has proven that he can be valuable in the passing game.
20:06Through the first six games of the season, he leads all running backs in receptions, and when I spoke with him, he
20:13told me he loves how his role has evolved in this offense.
20:17He actually grew up playing receiver. That's the position he wanted to play.
20:21He played it throughout high school, but he, quote, in his words, said he never grew, so he had to move to the running back position.
20:29Now he's getting to do both, and he said proving himself as a pass catcher has given him the confidence to go
20:35to Matthew Stafford, ask him how he's seeing certain plays, and he's really developed a deeper relationship with him, and that only
20:42came after he had the confidence and had proven himself as a pass catcher.
20:47So while Kyron won't replace Devontae Adams, there is nobody that will replace Devontae Adams, he can be a weapon for Sean
20:53McVay in this offense who, honestly, they could use him like they used Todd Gurley back in the day in 2018.
21:00And then you go, well, what do they have to make this turnaround?
21:04They have Matthew Stafford. So what gives you belief that they can turn this team around?
21:09Well, there's a Matthew Stafford leading this team still.
21:12The Rams, however, have dropped from first in scoring a year ago to 20th.
21:16Meanwhile, the Cowboys, another prolific attack that has been quiet in recent weeks.
21:20You better believe Jerry Jones weighing in from owners' meetings today.
21:23Welcome back to the Insiders. Caleb Williams, fresh off his comeback now in a short week as his Bears are hosting the Patriots.
21:31Here's a look at the key injuries for that Thursday night matchup starting on the Patriots' side of things.
21:36They're already down starting corner in Carlton Davis, and then you look at the Bears' notable injuries for Thursday night.
21:43Kyle Menungai is out. Now, Bears fans just relieved that their quarterback no longer on that list, although rest after his return
21:49is not a luxury that he has this week.
21:52Adam, how is his recovery looking this week after coming back Sunday from that hamstring injury?
21:57Sarah, the fact that he wasn't even listed on the injury report has to be an encouraging sign, and this is something,
22:04the short week, that the Bears baked into their decision when they worked him out pregame against the Green Bay Packers a
22:11couple of weeks ago before he returned last week against the Atlanta Falcons and played the way that he did, knowing that
22:18they had the short week against the New England Patriots this week.
22:21Again, he missed the three games. He came back last week, played very well, threw for over 300 yards, was emotionally fired up, you could see.
22:29And now it's just an extension of keeping him moving forward and starting and playing the full game Thursday night against the New England Patriots.
22:37Well, Adam, Drake May did not have to recover from an injury, but he did have to recover from a pretty big slump.
22:44He started the season in and talking to folks up in New England, and they said he was just pressing.
22:50He was trying to make a big play. He wasn't taking the stuff that the defense was giving him.
22:56And then the bad decisions and the mistakes just sort of snowballed on him.
23:01It sapped his confidence. And the only thing he could do was sort of work his way through it, one play at a time.
23:08They said it was nothing magical. He just had to focus on getting to the next play and making that a good play.
23:15And it has worked. In those first three games, the Patriots, the high score was 20 points.
23:20In the last three games, 29, 45, 26 points.
23:23So certainly he has rebounded. I wouldn't look too much at his stats because his completion percentage is still much lower than it was last year.
23:31But don't forget, he's played most of this season without A.J.
23:35Brown, who came back last week. He looked a little rusty.
23:38So as A.J. Brown works himself back into form, certainly you would think Drake May will continue to ascend.
23:44Judy, you mentioned that slump. They've got three straight wins, though, for those Patriots.
23:48The Niners, however, one of three unbeatens left this season.
23:51They're looking to start 7-0 for the fourth time in team history.
23:55They got a trip to Atlanta, where the Falcons are trying to avoid dropping their first four home games of the Kevin Stefanski era.
24:03The era before that, well, that was the Raheem Morris era.
24:06Who is now the defensive coordinator there in San Francisco.
24:09I mean, I think they – I don't think they can be more motivated.
24:13I mean, I think our guys are as motivated each week.
24:17I don't think they get too caught up in that stuff.
24:20But I know they care about Raheem a lot and definitely would want to do that for them.
24:26But I don't think we're looking at too much of a personal game like that.
24:30Well, nothing has been able to slow down these Niners yet this season, Mike G.
24:35But the health of Mike Evans is a concern after we saw him leave Monday Night Football with an Achilles issue.
24:42What is the latest on the Niners receiver? Achilles tendonitis for Mike Evans, which is what Christian McCaffrey battled a couple of years ago.
24:49Remember, that was sort of a week-to-week thing at one point.
24:52And that's sort of where this is as well.
24:55He didn't practice on Wednesday. They've got a bye coming up after this game.
25:00And I know a lot of us and some people that I talked to said, well, maybe he'll just sit out this
25:06game and then sit out the bye and that'll give him two straight weeks off.
25:11And it sounds all well and good, but that's not necessarily how the 49ers are approaching this.
25:16It's more or less, can he play this game?
25:19Does he feel good enough to play in this game?
25:22And we know how tough Mike Evans is, Sarah, and how competitive he is.
25:26So if he's got an opening to possibly get out there, he will.
25:30But they have to see how he manages that the rest of the week and if he can get himself game ready for Sunday.
25:38Yeah, we know he wants to get out there, Mike.
25:41He didn't want to get off the field last week.
25:44We saw him. Josh Jacobs is eligible to return this week for the Packers, who face the Lions.
25:50The running back has been taken off that commissioner's exempt list after missing the first six games of the season while the
25:56league was investigating violations of the personal conduct policy.
25:59Here's Matt LaFleur on the running back's return. I think a lot of times you get in a situation where you might not make the right decision.
26:08And I don't think that – I think people learn from their mistakes.
26:12And I think he's extremely remorseful. And I do believe that he is a good person.
26:17I've been around him quite a bit. And, you know, I just – I believe in second chances.
26:22Obviously, man, I'm remorseful and sorry for putting this team in this situation.
26:26You know, sometimes when you go through life, situations occur and a four-second, three-second decision, you know, can alter your life, honestly.
26:33But with that being said, man, I'm still a human being, man.
26:37Still trying to learn, still trying to grow from the whole process.
26:40I actually learned a lot throughout this process legally and just personally.
26:44But, yeah, man, going forward, man, I just try to be better.
26:48I know for some people this might be, you know, a stain on me and my character.
26:53I feel like I don't have to really speak on my character.
26:57A lot of people that know me in this locker room or that's been around me, I'll let them do that.
27:03But for me, man, I'm just trying to come back in here and play ball, learn from this mistake and move forward.
27:10Well, he's missed the first six games. James Schefter, what more can you tell us about Jacob's imminent return now?
27:16Well, he's back in the facility, back at practice, and I would fully expect that he'll play on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
27:23He had been staying in shape. And you'll have to remember that when the NFL took him off the commissioner exemplus on
27:30Friday and said that he was allowed to return to the building on Monday, the league said it reserved the right to
27:37review any additional evidence that would surface. Everybody's still wondering about the video in this particular case.
27:42Nobody has seen it publicly. If and when that were to come out, the league would have the ability to go and
27:49discipline and suspend Josh Jacobs again if it weren't.
27:52The league left itself that option. But for the time being, he is allowed to play football, and that is the plan
27:59that he will play football on Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
28:02The Green Bay Packers feel like he served his time.
28:05He was on the commissioner exemplus for six games.
28:08He's back in the building now, and he'll be back on the field on Sunday, Sarah.
28:13Well, without him, the Packers have the NFL's worst rush offense being held to under 60 yards a game.
28:19Jacobs could be returning. Meanwhile, the team he's facing this week, the Lions, well, Sam Laporta could be on his way out of Detroit.
28:26The tight end was very candid on Barstool's part in my take today over his feelings of not being paid.
28:33Here's what he said. He said, I think the combination of getting your heartstrings twisted as well as the violent sport that we play, you know, it sucks.
28:41It's disappointing that you go out there every week and bear the risk of getting hurt.
28:46Like last year, I broke my effing back for the team, and then I'm going out there this year, and I'm bawling,
28:53and maybe they're just not showing the love. It sucks.
28:56I'm going to continue to be a pro. I'm going to continue to do my thing and bawl out.
29:02And in three months, if I don't get to wear the Honolulu blue and play for the Lions anymore, it's going to be all good.
29:10I'll go get paid somewhere else. So whatever. Schefter, he let his feelings be known.
29:14I don't know if my dramatic reading did him justice.
29:17What happens now? What happens now is he continues to play for that contract, and there's a lot on the line for Sam Laporte.
29:25You don't ordinarily hear players be that outspoken about their particular current contract situation.
29:29That's the spot he's in. He and the Lions have broken off talks.
29:33Every player has that option. He could have taken a deal that he didn't feel was fair.
29:38He opted to bet on himself. And if he keeps playing the way he has through the first part of the season
29:45and gets the free agency, he's going to be a $20 million-a-year tight end and really cash in.
29:51So he's in a good spot as long as he stays healthy and keeps producing.
29:55But he wore his feelings on his sleeve there, Sarah.
29:59So whatever. So whatever. Whatever would be nice if he went out and had a huge game after making that statement.
30:05Meanwhile, on Monday night, it's the Eagles hosting the Cowboys in an NFC showdown with both teams looking to get back on track.
30:12You can catch it at 8 Eastern on ABC, ESPN, or streaming on the Disney Plus or ESPN app.
30:18Now, for all the talk about the Cowboys' defense, their potent offense has been stifled these last two weeks.
30:24Dax got just one passing touchdown in each of his last four games.
30:28Jerry Jones at the owners' meetings earlier today. Not only do I have expectations, I have a really sound basis of saying
30:35we're better than that and we can improve in the areas that have really frustrated us, especially last week.
30:41What does the state of the NFC sort of affect their thinking ahead of their timeline?
30:46It gives me a lot of promise. I see opportunity.
30:49And I see it legitimately because I know the things that we have the potential to do, both with our talent, both with our schemes, adjustments.
30:57I've seen us do in the spring the kinds of adjustments that you might want to do between the halves.
31:03So, yeah, I'm frustrated and I'm disappointed that we're sitting here with this record.
31:07But I'm sure I know that we have in place.
31:10It's internal. It's from within. The mirrors is what everybody's got to look for.
31:15Judy, he sounded like a frustrated parent, right? I'm frustrated, but I believe in you.
31:19We heard him say potential. We heard him say promise.
31:22We heard him say talent. And the reality is the NFC East is still very much up for grabs.
31:28How do you expect Jerry to handle that trade deadline as it's approaching?
31:32Of course, Jerry was asked if they could be buyers at the trade deadline.
31:37And he said, yes, if they could help the team this season, which means Jerry is not surprisingly not giving up on the season.
31:44And he shouldn't be. You heard him address the question about what do you think when you look at the rest of the NFC East?
31:52And he sees promise. I mean, there is obviously the potential for the Cowboys to bounce back and to get back in
31:59the race and to catch the Giants at the top of the NFC East.
32:03He is obviously disappointed. And I thought he came across as surprised at how much his team is struggling.
32:09At the end of that session, I asked him if he foresaw any other personnel changes to the staff.
32:15They added Mike Pettin last week to try to give a boost to the defense.
32:19I said, any other changes, additions, subtractions anywhere on the staff?
32:23And he does not expect that. He said the Mike Pettin situation is unique because he has the previous relationship with defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
32:31And because he'd been around the team in the spring, so he already knew the personnel.
32:36So he said that was more about Mike Pettin than it was about what they are trying to do on defense.
32:42No additions to the staff. And we will see how far it can take the Dallas Cowboys, Mike.
32:48Elsewhere in the NFC East, when it comes to additions to the defensive staff, we've got one for you.
32:53Steve Wilks, another recognizable name, former head coach with the Arizona Cardinals.
32:57Cardinals in interim a couple of times and a defensive coordinator at a number of places.
33:02The commanders have hired him. It's a game planning role.
33:05He is there during the week under Dan Quinn and Durante Jones, the defensive coordinator.
33:10And this had been the plan for a little bit now.
33:13Really, since the start of the season, he was officially hired last week.
33:17Helped with the game planning ahead of the game against the 49ers, the team that he had coordinated recently in the last couple of years.
33:25So Steve Wilks is going to be a part of the team in Washington.
33:29As Dan Quinn, much as we talked about this, could be if they didn't perform well in San Francisco, maybe he might
33:36lose his job during the bye week. No, he's saying I'm still in command here and I'm still working for ways to make this operation better.
33:44Steve Wilks added to the mix. Yeah, they fought back on Monday night, but then there was still questionable snafus there in Washington.
33:51Meanwhile, the Chiefs are unbeaten and they might be about to get even stronger.
33:56We have a live report from Kansas City where the Super Bowl MVP is about to head back to his old stomping grounds.
34:03Football's back. Hey, it's Drew Franklin from NFL Cover Zero.
34:06Enjoy the NFL season while listening to NFL Cover Zero.
34:09We have storylines, predictions, and lots of silliness. Here's what you can expect from the podcast in our second season.
34:15When you meet people and you say your job's a sports announcer, it's always interesting to see what the first thing they say is.
34:23I did have one of the more difficult questions, though.
34:26He sits next to me and he sees I'm on my computer and he goes, big sports fan.
34:31And I was like, yeah, actually. And he goes, what do you think about my Jaguars this year?
34:37I realized, like, no one's ever asked me that question ever about anything.
34:41And I was like, Duval. Oh. Listen to NFL Cover Zero on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
34:48Well, the unbeaten Chiefs get the defending Super Bowl champs this week in a Sunday night matchup.
34:53The Chiefs have all the momentum. Remember when people thought the Chiefs dynasty was over?
34:58Oh, they are back with a vengeance this year.
35:01And it might be getting even stronger. We welcome in Jeff Chedia from Kansas City.
35:05He was out at practice today. Mahomes feels like this undefeated team is only getting better right now.
35:11And when you look at the guys, Jeff, that they have coming back, it's hard to argue against him.
35:17Who is set to return for the Chiefs this week?
35:20Well, they're hoping they can start looking at Rasheed Rice, wide receiver, and left tackle Josh Simmons.
35:25The problem here from what I'm told from a team source is that both those players are still in a questionable place right now.
35:33Sarah, Rasheed Rice with that hamstring injury. And Josh Simmons has not played in the game all year because of a bulging disc in his back.
35:41So they want to see how things go this week.
35:44They're more encouraged about Rasheed Rice probably being able to get there because he's making good strides.
35:49But they need to have these players start getting healthy because this team has had a great start.
35:55They've also played one of the weakest schedules in the NFL so far.
35:59The combined record of their opponents is now 9-20.
36:01They've played two winless teams in the Chargers and the Dolphins.
36:05So they're about to face the Seahawks. They've got the Broncos coming up here.
36:09And they've got a really tough stretch after they get past the Jets and the Cardinals and the Falcons where the Bills
36:16and the Rams and the 49ers all start showing up.
36:19And so, tough stretch coming here. But one thing I'll say about this game coming up with Seattle, Kenneth Walker is going
36:26back to Seattle where he made his name. He's had a huge start to this season, a potential MVP candidate.
36:32And we were asking some players about how they felt about him going back.
36:36And they said the one thing about him, you cannot tell how he feels.
36:41He's not showing any emotion about any of this, even though it's a huge, huge opportunity for him to show what they missed when they let him walk.
36:49Yeah, you think about it. You're not going to let this guy, the Super Bowl MVP, leave.
36:55And he's had an even bigger season. The Broncos, by the way, were a game away from playing those Seahawks in the Super Bowl last year.
37:03Denver's still trying to regroup. Bo Nix has struggled to throw down the field this year.
37:08In three of the Broncos, four wins. He's had less than 200 yards passing.
37:12Mike, the Broncos want more from Nix. How do they get it?
37:16How do they get it? Well, they try different play colors.
37:19They try different terminology. He's got to let it rip from time to time.
37:23But that being said, he's playing winning football, and he played winning football last year.
37:28So there's a balance. Did we lose Mike G?
37:31We lost Mike G. We'll get him back. Mike G's never done talking.
37:35We're not going to let him be. Aaron Rodgers has done everything you could possibly do in his NFL career.
37:41But this weekend, a first for the quarterback. He's suiting up in Paris.
37:45We've got a preview from Paris next. Mike, call us back.
37:48The first ever game from Paris. It's the Steelers and the Saints.
37:52You can catch it right here on NFL Network, Sunday, 930 a.m.
37:56Eastern Time. You can also catch it streaming on the ESPN app.
38:00And, Judy, if there's one thing I know, it is that that plane ride to Paris got a lot more comfortable when
38:06you are packing to come from behind. Overtime win against Tampa that Aaron Rodgers engineered.
38:11I know you talked to those within the organization this week.
38:14How are the Steelers feeling? The Steelers are feeling pretty good.
38:18Let's start with the fact that the game is a full go, according to the league in Paris.
38:23There is some unrest in Paris over the last few weeks.
38:27But the NFL is very confident in its security procedures.
38:30We asked Roger Goodell about it today, and he said he is very comfortable.
38:34He was getting on a plane tonight to head to Paris himself for the game.
38:39So it is all systems go for the game on Sunday in Paris.
38:43As for how the Steelers are feeling, I caught up with team owner Art Rooney this week during the owners' meetings.
38:49And I said, what do you think about your team right now?
38:53And his face lit up, and he said, pretty good.
38:56Like, yeah, pretty good. No surprise that they feel that way.
39:00Aaron Rodgers has really come on very strong, especially in the last few weeks.
39:04He leads the league in completions, passing yards, and passing touchdowns.
39:07They've got a running attack with Jalen Warren. They have really started to come around as an offense.
39:13And let's face it, this is what the Steelers were hoping for when they paired Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers in what
39:20it turns out is going to be his final year of professional football, that Mike would be able to decipher what Aaron
39:27Rodgers is comfortable with now, put him in position to succeed.
39:30They've got some really good wide receivers, although, quite frankly, they're pretty banged up.
39:34I think right now they've got only three healthy wide receivers on the roster and the defense.
39:40Of course, it's the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's a top 10 defense.
39:43So right now, everything is coming together. You're right.
39:46They had that overtime victory over the Bucs, and that certainly makes everything look better.
39:50But right now, things are coming together nicely for the Steelers.
39:54They are in a dogfight in that division, but a very good time to take a trip to Europe if you're the Pittsburgh Steelers.
40:01Judy, I think it's always a good time to take a trip to Europe, but that's just me.
40:07Vibes are good around the Steelers. Meanwhile, it has been a tough week for the Colts.
40:12Their latest loss resulted in GM Chris Ballard being fired this week.
40:16It's got them trying to do something now that nobody has done yet this season, and that is beat the Vikings.
40:22Shane Steichen on how this week has been handled.
40:25Yeah, they've responded well. I mean, obviously, we're in a new week.
40:29But, again, whether we win or lose, we always meet on Mondays after the team meeting.
40:33You know, things we did well in the game, things we need to improve on, you know, get their thoughts, get their pulse on things.
40:41And we have conversations, you know, every week to go over, you know, everything that's going on.
40:46Shane, how much pressure do you feel personally to deliver as the head coach for this team after laughing to Chris, and does that ratchet up after?
40:55Yeah, I think there's pressure in this league every year regardless of circumstances.
40:59And as the head coach, you've got to lead this team.
41:02You've got to empower your players. You've got to guide them every single day and put them in position.
41:08And that's the way I look at it is put your head down and go to work, and that's all you can do.
41:15Mike G back with us, thankfully. The Colts are 2-11.
41:18If you go back to last season's bye for them, Chris Ballard is gone.
41:23What does Shane Steichen have to do now to stay in Indy past this season?
41:27Win games, make the playoffs. And I think that there's an opportunity to do that because, you know, it was a message
41:34to the fan base that everything that has happened to this point is just not good enough.
41:39That's what Carly Ursi Gordon was basically communicating. The fact that she didn't fire Shane Steichen tells you that she believes she's got a good head coach here.
41:48Now, can he mount a case to stay in this role beyond 2027?
41:52That's TBD. We've got to see what happens down the stretch.
41:56If he does, with a new general manager keeping Shane Steichen, I think that is a realistic possibility.
42:01And I think there are a lot of people around the league that think if he gets fired, he'd have a shot
42:08at another head coaching job somewhere else, at the very least offensive coordinator gigs of his choosing.
42:13So I'm looking for Shane Steichen to make a push here.
42:17Mount a case to be the Colts coach in 2027.
42:20That is not off the board as far as I'm concerned.
42:23Yeah, and now mounting a case, though, comes with having to go to Minnesota and a team that has been absolutely rolling.
42:30Also rolling to Sean Watson. He's got his Browns in control and a tightly contested AFC North.
42:35We're going to hear from Todd Munkin next on the Insiders.
42:39Here's a look at your AFC North standings, a tight one.
42:42Three teams are at four and two. The Bengals are a game back.
42:46The Browns just beat the Ravens. They come from behind victory to take control.
42:50And now they get a trip to Nashville to take on a Titans team, trying to win back-to-back games for the first time since 22.
42:58Mike G., if I would have told you before this season started that it would be week seven and I would say
43:05Deshaun Watson and the Browns have control of this division right now, what do you make of what's happening in Cleveland?
43:11Nope, nope. I'm not falling for that, Sarah. Oh, here we are.
43:15How about that one? What do I make of it?
43:18I make Deshaun Watson now setting up a really interesting scenario after this season.
43:23And I say interesting because Jimmy Haslam said, well, we took a big swing and a miss with the quarterback.
43:29Remember that quote? Now they might have to re-sign that guy in the offseason.
43:33I mean, it's hard to find a quarterback in this league regardless of draft situation, salary cap.
43:38Like, they're just not easy to come by. And the way he's playing now, take everything else out of it, the way
43:45he's playing now is a guy that you would extend.
43:48So it's kind of sort of where we're heading here.
43:51But for now, the Browns is hoping that everything keeps moving in the right direction with Watson, the offense, with Todd Munkin
43:58and his team, and they make the gas playoffs.
44:01We'll see. You know what, Mike? It's actually crazy that only the Browns, they could be winning, and it makes the quarterback
44:08situation complicated as to what you do there. Meanwhile, the Dolphins are still looking for their first win of the Jeff Halfley era.
44:15The Dolphins have won six of their last seven against the Jets, but Malik Bliss has struggled as Miami's starter.
44:21Judy, what kind of opportunity do the Jets have in front of them this week?
44:26Well, I'll just tell you, I caught up with some folks at the Jets over the last week, and one person said
44:32to me, we better beat the Dolphins. We should have beaten the New England Patriots.
44:37So there's an awful lot of optimism all of a sudden in the Jets building.
44:42They know they've got some game operation stuff they've got to clean up, but they are feeling really good about where this
44:49team is headed and headed into a very big offseason for the Jets.
44:53Judy, Mike, thanks. That does it for us. We'll be back here on Friday with the Insiders.
44:58Enjoy Thursday night football. It's going to be the Bears hosting the Patriots.
45:02We're back with you on Friday. See you, everybody.
