PositiveSleeperOct 30, 2026
McConkey is a player to buy low on; his health scares have been unfair this season, and while his size and history of lingering issues date back to college, it's unlikely his season involves this many half games. He had the bye week to rest, and the Chargers appear set for relentless second-half catch-up scripts, including this week against the Rams (touchdown favorites). Los Angeles' defensive line is very banged up, partially countering the Chargers' OL problems. McConkey has a 1.94 yards per route this year, enough to be a fantasy starter; he was WR9 on WR14 usage in Week 1 before this season deteriorated. The source doubts McConkey will stay buried in the WR30s for the rest of the year and hopes the Chargers dropback more often after being bottom-five in neutral pass rate to start the season.

McConkey was dominant in the second half of his rookie year but struggled in Year 2 due to offensive line collapse, stale play-calling, and a crowded target tree—circumstances Scott Pianowski excuses. New OC Mike McDaniel is a creative schemer who will put McConkey in motion and find YAC-producing routes downfield. Keenan Allen's departure thins the target tree. QB Justin Herbert can elevate talent, especially with the fortified offensive line (despite losing starting center Tyler Biadasz). McConkey remains available outside of Pick 40 in Yahoo leagues, representing a delightful buying opportunity for the final draft weekend.

JJ Zachariason selected Ladd McConkey as one of two upside WRs prioritized in the mock draft. Matt Harmon and Ray Garvin are cited as analysts who favor McConkey for 2026; Garvin has him among wideouts who can make the jump to elite status, while Harmon featured him in his WR position preview. Zachariason notes McConkey is in his prime and should be the WR1 on the Chargers, an elite offense, and if everything clicks, he loves the Waddle-McConkey duo as starters all season.

McConkey regressed from 1,149 yards as a rookie to 789 in Year 2, partly due to Keenan Allen's presence (122 targets) and reduced slot snaps, but more importantly due to reduced efficiency on targets. The Chargers' offensive line allowed the second-highest pressure rate in the league in 2025; Justin Herbert posted a 107.9 passer rating, 76.2% completion rate and 7.8 yards per attempt when kept clean versus poor performance under pressure. Herbert's receivers averaged 0.86 fantasy points per dropback when pressured and 1.32 when clean—a 50%+ efficiency ding. While new center Tyler Biadasz is injured, the Bolts have Pro Bowl tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater back and upgraded guard spots. Allen is now in Indy, removing him as a target threat. The source projects a third-year rebound and potential breakout for McConkey.

Denny ranks McConkey WR12 and is all in on the rookie who was top ten in yards per route run and gets a massive upgrade in offensive play-caller this season after former OC Greg Roman used him in all the wrong ways. McConkey has been highly efficient on pass routes that feature prominently in Mike McDaniel's offense, including crossers and posts. His cold year—with one of the NFL's lowest catchable target rates—means a bounce back is in the works. Denny sees him as a WR1 you can draft as your WR2.
