Despite fan interest in signing Abanikanda off the Cowboys practice squad for his speed and burst, Ed Kelley notes the RB has had minimal NFL opportunity since his 22 carries for the Jets in 2023 and has cycled through multiple practice squads. The lack of sustained roster interest from NFL teams suggests evaluators do not see sufficient value to warrant a 53-man roster spot.

The source reports that the Cowboys waived veteran running back Israel Abanikanda off the 53-man roster to make room for Tyler Goodson. Abanikanda, a former fifth-round pick, had signed with Dallas on a practice squad deal in November and was brought back on a futures deal in January. Despite having 'a strong training camp and preseason with Dallas,' he ultimately failed to make the 53-man roster and was cut along with Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah before being brought back on the practice squad. His waiver move signals the end of his tenure with the team.

Israel Abanikanda, a fifth-round pick of the Jets in 2023, was signed from the Cowboys' practice squad to take Malik Davis's spot on the active roster following Davis's injured reserve placement. Signed to the active roster from the practice squad as a direct replacement for injured Malik Davis. Abanikanda is fully up to speed on the Cowboys offense after spending time with the team since November; he should be able to contribute if asked, though Emari Demercado is expected to pick up much of the work vacated by Davis.

Israel Abanikanda signed to active roster from practice squad as counter move to Malik Davis' injured reserve placement. He is fully up to speed on the offense and should be able to contribute if asked, though the team will not ask much of him right away as Emari Demercado should pick up much of the work. Abanikanda has limited production history with 70 rushing yards and 43 receiving yards.

PositiveDepth ChartSep 12, 2026Reddit /r/fantasyfootball

Signed to active roster from practice squad following Malik Davis' IR placement. Community treats him as a depth piece with minimal fantasy relevance; no consensus on his role or upside. Meme-heavy comments ('Abanikanda forever', 'ABANIKANDA DONT WANT NONE UNLESS YOU GOT BUNS HUN') suggest low confidence in his fantasy utility. If Javonte Williams goes down, community views the backfield as a committee/mess rather than Abanikanda as a clear handcuff.
