Activated from injured reserve Tuesday after opening his practice window Oct. 7; Raiders coach Klint Kubiak indicated Thornton needed to demonstrate readiness to contribute before activation. Thornton has a 21-day evaluation window that was approaching its Wednesday deadline; without activation he would have remained on injured reserve for the rest of the season. The second-year wide receiver now gets an opportunity to turn his physical potential (size and speed combination) into production for a struggling offense attempting to halt a four-game losing streak, though earning playing time and coaching staff trust represents the next hurdle.

Thornton, a fourth-round pick from Tennessee in 2025, finished his rookie season with 10 catches for 135 yards and no touchdowns in 15 games, underscoring the significant development work that remained. The breakthrough the Raiders envisioned has yet to materialize, and his current situation—facing a roster deadline with limited time to prove he can contribute—only sharpens concerns about whether his physical gifts (6-foot-5, 4.30-second 40-yard dash) will translate to consistent NFL production.

Thornton's practice window opened Oct. 7 and closes Oct. 28; if not activated by then, he remains on injured reserve for the rest of the season. The Raiders have had more than two weeks to evaluate him, and their decision to keep him off the roster suggests he has yet to demonstrate what the coaching staff needs to see. Additionally, Jack Bech, eligible to return from injured reserve next week after a broken forearm, is expected to be immediately added to the 53-man roster given his importance in the pass game, run blocking, and special teams versatility, further clouding Thornton's roster prospects.

Thornton remains on injured reserve despite being healthy and facing a clear need at wide receiver for the Raiders; coach Klint Kubiak stated he will not be activated for Sunday's game against the Rams, extending his season-long absence. Kubiak acknowledged Thornton is 'making big progress' and 'done a lot of good things in practice' but is 'still working back into getting his football legs back after missing a lot of time,' indicating the coaching staff does not yet trust him to contribute on Sundays despite his health status.
