Brooks was a popular high-upside sleeper pick across the fantasy football industry heading into the season, but he did not carve out a significant role in Week 1 as Chuba Hubbard dominated the Carolina Panthers backfield. The source notes there is still time for Brooks to develop a more prominent role as the season progresses, but Hubbard's 78% snap share and majority of high-value touches suggest Brooks remains secondary for now.

Brooks is the type of talent that can break the game open with a short pass to the house or couple 20+ runs to get the offense moving and keep Chicago off-balance. By all accounts Brooks has had an excellent summer and the Carolina coaches couldn't stop raving about him. The 6'0" 210lb back out of Texas was universally lauded as the top back in the '24 class, despite suffering a knee injury that ended his collegiate career early and set his pro career back some. If he is finally healthy enough to play like himself, his 4.4 speed, impressive acceleration and underrated receiving ability are expected to be problematic for the opposition all season.

Brooks is a nice flex with upside in Week 1; he should at least split work with Chuba Hubbard to open the season, with upside to be the clear lead runner from the jump. His college tape is solid: in 2024, he ranked 21st in yards after contact per attempt, ninth in elusive rating, and 21st in yards per route run (per PFF). The Bears' run defense struggled to close last season and didn't make massive additions this offseason. In Weeks 12-18, Chicago allowed the highest rushing success rate, sixth-most yards before contact per attempt, and 11th-highest EPA per rush, making this a favorable matchup for Brooks.

Brooks missed time late in the preseason but has returned to practice this week in limited fashion and is up in the air to play in Week 1. There is excitement surrounding Brooks and his massive upside, but he was limited to just 12 touches in his first two NFL seasons due to injury and the work distribution between Brooks and Chuba Hubbard in Week 1 and beyond is unknown. The source recommends a wait-and-see approach despite the good matchup.

The Panthers have made it clear their RB rotation will feature a base down back on first and second downs, while a complement plays on third downs. It would make most sense if Chuba Hubbard begins in base downs as the incumbent starter, especially with Brooks' practice designations. While it's possible Brooks wins the starting job long term, unless a pre-game report suggests otherwise, Hubbard is the starter for now. The Panthers project for 21.75 points (20th) as dogs to the Bears.
